TheStreet.com Video - Microsoft's Vista OS is just plain awful, says Michael Comeau.(Contains some profanity. Viewer discretion is advised.)

It’s gotten so bad that Wall Street is now openly ridiculing Vista. Gates and Ballmer cannot be happy with the various reports on their flagship product this week.
I highly recommend anyone getting a new computer to upgrade from Vista to WindowsXP. Vista is a complete joke.
I have had Vista for several months and have no problem, of course I turn of the Aero themed stuff.
Will it work on my HP?
I hate Vista.
My company will hold out on XP by our fingernails if we have to. As for the post-Vista Windows? Who knows.
Not sure on HP because HP/Compaq used to be notorious for not letting you strip the hard drive and putting your own stuff on it.
I just purchased two dells less then a month ago with Vista installed. Tested Vista for less then 24 hours before I yanked it off and put XP on instead...went flawlessly.
Video now “unavailable”.
What am I doing wrong?
My Vista system works very well. Please let me know problems I should be seeing and how to duplicate said problems.
works for me..
Are you sure you want me to answer?
Yes
Well see I'd go to run programs I normally run and it would prompt me to make sure I really wanted to run it all the time.
Are you sure you want to hit [Enter]
Yes
Then when I tried to uninstall anything (the factory crap like A (are you sure you want to Shift-Caps these letters...YES) OL it would give me all kinds of grief then even more prompting.
Are you sure you want to hit [Enter]
Yes
Think the last straw was when I tried to turn off the stupid prompts (are you sure you want to turn off the prompts...YES) and it asked me again. But it didn't actually turn them all off and I (are you sure you want to use the pronoun I...YES YOU STUPID PIECE OF JUNK I AM SURE. That's IT.... FDISK, Format, Install XP)
Hi Welcome to Windows XP, would you like to take a tour?
No
Okay then have a nice day.
Are you logged on - with Vista?
A few months ago, MS even removed the authentication in hoped that people would steal VISTA.
It is so bad that they wouldn’t.
The latest VISTA SP1 (from what I’ve read) creates more problems than it solves. It causes many add-ons and peripherals to stop working.
After giving up on Vista, I took the plunge and bought a MacPro laptop.
So far, so good. It connected to my household wireless in seconds, something that for 3 weeks I still couldn’t get Vista to do.
A friend this very afternoon dropped off his girlfriend’s new Vista-run Dell with me and asked me to please stop it from crashing for no apparent reason. I’m not hopeful. If I can’t stop the random crashes, I’ll trash the Vista and install XP. This sort of thing shouldn’t be necessary in a mature field of technology.
Thanks, Domandred.
I suspected my HP might start to smoke if I tried to load XP.
Same here. On three computers. We sure must be lucky, huh?
Vista since Nov and quite happy...printer, wireless, and camera all fire up without inserting discs....syncing with cell phone nicely....
I just ordered a new Dell desktop with XP Pro. You can still get XP.
Type
10 PRINT "BITE ME!"
20 GOTO 10
And run
got mine at a retail store. didn’t have a choice, got what i got.
Are you sure you want to BITE ME?
Sorry couldn’t resist
I have tools in my kit that no OS can stand up to. If I want XP on a box that had Vista on it...ain't nothing stopping me.
Are you running 64-bit Vista?
Install VMware Server then try to connect to Local Host.
Yes I am running x64 Vista.
But how about you give me a test using a product that is supported on Vista?
http://vmware.com/products/beta/vmware_server/vmserver2.pdf
Please see page 25.
Smart move. 6 months on and Vista is still pissing me off on a daily basis.
I want to upgrade to XP, but here's a question.
I have an Acer 1610 and they do have XP drivers available on their site for it but while I know computers very well I'm no expert, so I don't have full confidence in my ability to switch.
However, One bad thing that could be a plus is it only came with a 111GB hard drive which I'm filling up rapidly (I have lots of pictures & videos), so I am going to need another hard drive. This is no problem, There's plenty of space & plugs in my computer for it. I'm looking at getting 500gb one which by itself should be more than I will ever need.
Now if I buy a new hard drive, can I install XP on the new drive, put the right drivers on it and then just switch the plugs to make that my C:\ (boot up)drive? If anything goes wrong then I can just switch them back. And if it does work, just delete all the vista files and use the current hard drive I have as back up & storage.
I know I will have to reinstall much of my software, but it would be worth it to escape Vista Hell
What issues have you been having?
I just bought my first Apple iMac for my 13 yo daughter. No more MS until vista is gone. I would buy MS if they keep XP Pro available. I have like 4 desktops and 3 laptops and 1 iMac now. Next laptop will be a Mac. See ya MS!
Pw3nd.. :)
Ahh. So you recommend beta software over mature software?
VMWare Server 1.0.x isn’t supported on Vista either.
However both versions of VMWare server run rather well under WS2008
I was only discussing Vista. That’s the version I have issues with.
Again, what are those issues? And no running unsupported software isn’t an issue - it is user error.
No--it's a requirement. Digitally signed drivers are not a protection--it's another way for the OS to get in the way of productivity. MS just cannot figure out security. The *nix model works just fine. Why can't MS emulate that, instead of trying to re-invent the (very mature) wheel?
Which Unix security model are you referring to? There exist only about half a dozen or so.
Does it matter? They’re all better than the nightmare that MS foisted on us.
And what is so wrong with the Vista security model?
Besides being slow and unstable, Vista isn't backwards compatible with proprietary corporate software...in fact, isn't even backwards compatible with shelfware like Peachtree Accounting products that run just fine under Windows XP.
Vista is also short on drivers for old hardware, greatly limiting where it can even be used.
You seem to like it, though...so before you give me your great (probably canned) speech about Vista issues being "by design" or "user error" or the "Fault of 3rd party failure to write to MS specs or standards" or any other spiel that you naively think that I haven't heard, first please tell me what is your dog in the race...
For instance, do you make your living from MS products or service or related support...or are you on any MS related or sponsored payrolls...and do you have to use Vista in a corporate legacy environment or do you have the luxury of using Vista only on new hardware and only running new shelfware?
As a Mac representative told me: "Vista is the best product release that Apple's ever had, as long as I've been a rep!"
He showed me his sales figures, and it was quite obvious. In fact, Vista was the reason I was talking to him--i.e., considering a switch to Macs.
It was quite telling when Dell made it so you could get XP as an option on only HIGH-end systems.
Funny how the guffaws ended after you posted this.
If you are a home or college user, sure.
But if you are a corporate user who needs to run proprietary company programs that were written for XP or Win2K, then you are SOL on Vista because Vista isn't backwards compatible.
Likewise, if you are a small business user or a gamer, you'll find that Vista won't run commercial shelfware that runs just fine on XP and Win2K.
And if you are a poweruser...forget networking speed and on-line DSL speed.
Moreover, you'll get to see something under Vista that you probably haven't seen since NT 3.5...the blue screen of death.
Waking up from hibernation?! Allow minutes, not miliseconds.
And running your old printers and scanners?! Forget it; Vista doesn't have the drivers.
But wait...what does that mean...doesn't have the "drivers?"
It means that Vista isn't backwards compatible with Windows 2000 and Windows XP drivers. The one key selling point of Windows was always that it was backwards compatible, and Microsoft threw that baby out with the Vista bathwater.
When Microsoft tells you that the drivers for your old printer and scannners don't exist for Vista, what they are actually telling you is that Microsoft is selling you a non-Windows product labeled Vista.
But it really won't run Windows software and drivers.
Vista is the Windows ME of our time. It's the DOS 4.0 of our Age.
When I purchased my new laptop last summer, I searched to find a good one that still had XP installed by manufacturer. Found a great Sony Vaio laptop that cost more than I wanted to pay but it has been worth it. Not one minute of problems with XP.
Not being a Techie - I just couldn’t hassle with getting one with Vista on it and switching over to XP.
The Sony people said they keep these two laptop models available for those who demand XP in their corporate world of clients.
And there are many.
Before I post my entire professional history I invite you to do the same.
Don’t forget that what Microsoft *thought* would happen is that Vista’s lack of driver support would cause most people to buy new hardware, just for Vista. That would have made the hardware vendors happy, right?
They’re *still* surprised at just how badly that was recieved.
***
Also do not forget that Vista *isn’t* the total rewrite we were originally promised. There are *still* vast swaths of code in Vista and Office that Microsoft has NO IDEA WHATSOEVER how it works or what it does.
AH, OK — I’m using Firefox with NoScript and AdBlockPlus plugins.
Once I turned *all* those off, the video ran.
