Jimmy Fallon to replace Conan on "Late Night"

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Saturday Night Live" veteran Jimmy Fallon has sealed a deal to succeed "Late Night" host Conan O'Brien on NBC in 2009, sources said.

O'Brien, whose show airs at 12:35 a.m., is moving to Los Angeles next year to replace Jay Leno at "The Tonight Show," which airs an hour earlier.

NBC is expected to make the announcement on May 12 during its "upfront" presentation to advertisers in New York. The network declined comment on Thursday.

Fallon, 33, co-starred on "SNL" for six seasons, and co-hosted its "Weekend Update" segment. He left the show to focus on making features, although such efforts as "Fever Pitch" and "Taxi" fell flat at the box office.

Fallon's new gig as "Late Night" host stems from a development deal he signed with NBC in early 2007. He will probably stay at O'Brien's Studio 6A at New York's 30 Rock, although details have not been confirmed.

The move further cements NBC's late-night transition, which is making Leno a highly sought-after free agent. ABC and Fox are reportedly circling the top-rated comic, while NBC is trying to keep him in the company fold with a new show.

Conan O’Brien to take over for Jay Leno.
Jimmy Kimmel must be celebrating with Ben Affleck over a bottle of champagne.

Jay Leno will replace Geraldo Rivera as the highest-paid joke at Fox News.

Weird. I remember watching Conan when he sukked the first time. He got good writers, so I watched for awhile more. Then I stopped. I don’t watch any of them anymore. It’s been literally years since I watched Late Night entertainment (well, except for Red Eye, which I can’t watch now either since it went from 2 to 3 a.m. and besides, Gut’s mom dissed the Pope).

No reason to watch Conan, he’s not funny, just an idiot!

Why is Leno leaving?

Anybody catch Fallon’s bit part in “Band of Brothers”?

Was NEVER a Conan fan - don’t like him at all. I love Jimmy Fallon - he’s young, hip and adorable. (Too bad I’m not)

Yup. I almost missed it. He drove into the scene and I’m thinking, “I know this guy.” :-)

Yes, I concur about Conan’s lameness, and Jimmy Fallon??? What is nbc thinking? Two big mistakes. I love Leno, a brilliant, class act - hope he gets an even bigger contract bundle wherever he goes. Conan’s a dork (and Letterman is hugely obnoxious). Fallon, well, he’s definitely not ready for prime time (or the big 3 late night).

I used to love Letterman, now I watch Leno if nothing good is on the History channel. The guy after Letterman, Craig Ferguson is a hoot I think.

He just became a U.S. citizen and it was interesting to see him be able to go from very serious and thankful for being able to become a citizen - to being very funny. He still brings it into his stuff, the serious and the funny.

I don’t watch Ferguson that much, but it was a great episode when he was sworn in. He looked actually choked up at the ceremony.

I think I had caught him a couple times before awhile ago and just happened to catch that show. Now, if I’m up that late, I try to make a point of watching.

“Hah - I’m an American now. I’m FREE. I can do anything I want. In fact, to celebrate I’ll walk back to my car with no pants on as I can do anything I want!”

[Craig Ferguson spent his first night as an American in the county jail].

As a big workaholic, he promised his wife Mavis (who have been married 30 years or so) that after all the years of working, that he would quit at age 60 and spend time with her so I don’t believe that money is in the future for him at least for now.

Craig Ferguson has lately been beating Conan in the ratings, despite a much smaller lead in audience. So they are going to give him the hugely successful Tonight Show to wreck and give the failed Fallon Late Night. Makes no sense at all.

I’m hoping these late night shows have seen their day and they run classic movies instead.

He might be in good company. Anyone remember this blockbuster from 1989?

Ferguson is the best, but you do have to train your ear to get passed the brogue.

Yep, Craig is my other fave! I love that guy more and more, especially for his diligent effort to become a citizen and now for his pride at doing so. The ceremony he showed one night was touching. He has a brilliant wit and mind and is also a talented author.

I’d heard that all these years Jay Leno never spent his Tonight Show salary. All of that has been banked all of these years. He lived off of his other gigs.

He’s supposed to be well set with his savings.

They are more likely to air infomercials or infotainment “news” programs WITH commercial interruptions.

There is little respect for public domain movies anymore at the affiliates. They’d rather show 3 30 minute ads than a 70 minute movie stuffed with 20 minutes of car dealership sponsored ads.
