Brought to you by Manufacturer’s Hanover Bank, later purchased by Chase Manhattan Bank.

Was it really 24 years ago? My first election as a member of the Republican Party. I had campaigned for Reagan in 1980 but I was a “Democrat For Reagan”. I’d first registered to vote in 1974 and nobody registered as a Republican that year. Then in 1982 came the nuclear freeze movement and the Democratic Party’s statement that they would no longer back any candidate who opposed abortion. Those two facts made me a Republican. Arnold Schwarzenegger and John McCain made me an independent.

When you think about it, you realize that there are people who will vote in this coming election who have never lived under a really good president. I am grateful that Ronald Reagan was our leader. He feed a billion people from The Philippines to Nicaragua to Poland and deserves a greater place in history than he has been granted to date.

I thought that until 2004 the incumbent party was blue and the challenger was red. Only after the 2000 election did each party become with a specific color.

Thank you!
Thank you, for that brief return to a better, simpler time...away from all the political correctness and mean-spiritness of today.
It truly was Morning in America, before Al-Qaeda, green politics and creeping socialism. Would that another Ronald Reagan could rise up to return us to the greatness that this country was.
I fear the Walter Mondales of the world (now in the guise of DailyKos, Huffington Post, Air America etc.) have finally worn us down, and won the day.
I’m 48 years old. Will I ever see America so great again?

How extraordinary. They even had typewriters in the news room! I remember that announcer’s voice. He used to be the announcer way back to the Apollo moon mission days I think.

Anyway, I can’t quite recall 1980 but I think by 1984 most the networks switched to red for the Repubs and blue for the Dems. In 1976 it was the other way around. I suspect the got complaints for calling Democrats “reds” but it sure was accurate anyway!

In 1982 president Reagan made a speech asking for limitation of excessive government. after the speech Dan Rather, Bill Moyers and Bob schieffer made what amounted to the Dem response. So vicious, petty and partisan were they that I said I would not watch CBS news as long as Dan and bill were on it. I have stayed true to that even though both of them are long gone. But, I did violate that promise just to watch Dan Rather squirm on election night 1984 and 1994. it was wonderful. Judging from the ratings a lot of other people made the same decision.

“When you think about it, you realize that there are people who will vote in this coming election who have never lived under a really good president.”

Under FDR, Truman and Eisenhower we had three giants. The the next three were flawed giants. After that they have all been largely nothing except for Ronald Reagan. If the next election produces anything else it will be from McCain putting a good man on the ticket and then graciously leaving the earth plane after he is elected (which i suspect there is a good chance of his doing).

I haven't seen it confirmed, but I've heard that the networks alternated red and blue between the incumbent and challenging party each election. In 2000 the red state/blue state terminology became popular and may have stuck.

My favorite election reaction from the press was in 1994. The reporters were shocked and horrified by the Republicans taking winning both the House and Senate.

1984 was my first election and I remembered that day voting for Reagan, a vote that I was enthusiastic about. Since then, I have not been enthusiastic about who was running since most of the picked were establishment types. Reagan was not East Coast Establishment type.

I noticed that the states Reagan carried were already red.

I caught that, too. I'd thought the red/blue designations were concocted in 2000. Interesting. Of course, we all know why the media chose red for the Repubs instead of the Dems. He-he.

Thanks for posting! Rather must’ve HATED having to say those words. He probably walked away from the desk at break and beat his head against a wall.

Ronnie, I miss you so.

It is kinda sad that the only joy we have in this election cycle is to be nostalgic about past victories.... Not a good sign.
