Police want to speak with people who may have been in the area.
St. ALBANS -- Police in Kanawha County were investigating Tuesday after a teenager was shot and killed during a hunting trip in a wooded area off Kanawha Street.
The victim, identified as 16-year-old Nicholas Caldwell, left his home about 6:30 a.m., according to police.
He was supposed to return by noon, but when he failed to show up a family member went searching for him.
"A family member went out looking and found the young man deceased in the woods," said Lt. Sean Crosier of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department.
Investigators say the juvenile was alone when he took to the woods but it's unclear when or how he was shot.
Police do not think the wound was self inflicted because he was bow hunting
Detectives said finding Caudwell body was especially difficult because of the rough terrain.
Detectives combed the woods for hours searching for clues, but still have a lot more questions than answers.
"We are investigating it as a crime scene," Crosier said.
Police are asking that anyone who may have been hunting to call the Kanawha County Sheriffs Department at 304-357-0169.
Prayers for Nicholas Caldwell & his family.
RIP
I assume he was turkey hunting. It doesn’t say what happened to him. He may have been calling in a tom and some trespasser blasted him.
Turkey hunting is the most dangerous. However, hunting is very safe. The millions of hunters out in the woods and just a handful get killed every year. Probably safer than gardening. It is always sad cause it is so unexpected.
I have been browsing websites all evening concerning the death of Nick. He was my 2nd cousin. His mom is my cousin. He has twin brother, a younger brother and a 3-4 year old baby sister.
Yes he was turkey hunting about a mile or so from his home. I have heard from family members that there was footprints all around him when he was found. So whoever shot him, knows that they did so. They must have walked to where he was and checked him and then got out of there.
This is going to be a very difficult time for his family as it would be for anyone.
Please keep them all in your prayers and pray the culprit is found as well. The family will need closure before its all over.
Thanks for posting here. Prayers for your family.
My hope is that this was an accident and the responsible party will come forward and let this tragedy be used for a good purpose...
I have family roots in West Virginia that go back more than 200 years. Any time I see/hear sad news like this, I feel an extra twinge. May God be with your family.
2nd Cousin they did not report that there were footprints around him on WOWK-TV! Thanks for telling us. Sorry about your Cousin.
I live up in Huntington, but I used to live in Kanawha County, so I know the area well. I have almost been hit by bow-hunters in Kanawha County.
I posted this to remind hunters to please be careful during any hunting season.
Sorry for your loss.
