Seattle's pigeons shot with darts at risk of painful death
Seattle Times ^ | Wed Apr 30 2008 | Sonia Krishnan

Someone is impaling pigeons in downtown Seattle with metal darts, and the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is putting up $2,000 to help find out who.

Several Seattle residents have called PETA in the past two weeks to report seeing three injured pigeons fluttering around with needlelike projectiles — about 3 to 4 inches long — piercing their heads, said Tori Perry, cruelty case worker for the Norfolk, Virginia-based organization. The birds were spotted in the 1400 block of Third Avenue and at the corner of Third Avenue and Union Street, she added.

The darts were fired from a blow gun, lodging directly behind the birds' eyes without penetrating their brains, Perry said.

The longer the darts remain, the higher the chance for the injury to get worse and infection to set in, she said. The end result: "a very, very painful death," Perry said.

I guess they are a pretty bad shot (sarc). They need to hit about 1/4 of an inch down to hit the brain and have a clean kill.

Looks like nothing more than a bad shot on a urban pest.

Cities all over the US used to use sharpshooters with .22LR rifles. I hope they still do.

Maybe the bird(s) intentionally flew between the shootist and the target to commit suicide, like this one did at an MLB baseball game:

The MSM seems very anxious to normalize and institutionalize the PETA radicals. They are portrayed as a the arbiters/authorities of anything involving animals.

There are virtually NO pigeons in the downtown area of my medium-sized midwestern city. They have been trapped, poisoned or shot out of existence.

Yep.
But they (and gulls) are still a problem at airports.

Ready on the left? Check.
Ready on the right? Check.

The range is now HOT.

Shooter is using a blowgun:

http://www.blow-gun.com/storefront/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=TZSI&Category_Code=1

Very cheap, legal, easy to acquire. Usually the work of a juvenile or young adult. He will probably move on to cats and dogs; then humans?

I immediately knew that was from a blowgun. A nutter I knew in college had one. Damn things can be amazingly powerful and accurate.

I don’t buy this nonsense that EVERY kid who has an interest in pellet guns, or blow guns, or ninja stars, or nun chucks, or rubber bands... and uses them when they’re young is on a fast track for serial killer status. I used any and all of these on birds when I was a kid and never progressed past the point of being pissed that I was a bad shot.

My parents brought a blow gun back from the Amazon jungle when I was a kid. The natives would shoot poison tipped darts at the monkeys up in the rain forest canopy. They are very accurate. Me and my brothers got pretty good at target practice with the blow gun but never hunted with it. The wooden darts were sharpened using piranha teeth.

I’m with you. Darn near every kid in the Mid-West would be a serial killer if what the libtards said is true.

Off topic, basically, but this fella ("Capuchine Pigeon", banded) suddenly appeared in our yard last June and hung around 24/7 until Labor Day....and disappeared again.

Yep, legal in most states. Tried to buy one mail order 25 years ago but the retailer turned me down because I lived in Kookyfornia. Out here, you might as well be walking around with an M85 in your hip pocket. Unbelievable.

Common thing about pigeons and roaches, they are both creatures who have adapted well to urban human habitats, which ghetto do you live in?

i don’t live in any ghetto... i live in 4,500 square foot ranchette on 5 sprawling acres... with a detached 800 square foot school room where i teach my kids and offer workshops... i have traveled to several different Pacific Islands and the South Indies... i have seen cockroaches in some of these places... as for pigeons, i have run into them while visiting city parks... there they are—making messes... i find them disgusting... i guess because i am not used to being around such pests, i have not had a chance to befriend them... therefore, i have no sympathy for them when they meet their demise...

God made all life, but maybe next time he’ll ask for your approval.

no--no cows... we have two Border Collies and a Beta fish... most people in our "neighborhood" have horses... we had some people not too far from us that were raising Alpacas... we just like being surrounded by all the property... it's very beautiful out here... i'm quite busy teaching my kids and other people's kids, developing curricula and learning new things myself, that there is no way i would have time to devote to raising farm animals... yuck... cleaning stalls and such? not i...

i don't believe God needs to ask me for my approval... i'm perfectly fine letting people shoot pigeons and Black Flag cockroaches... are you telling me that if your home were invaded by ants you would not kill them? if the ants were in your pantry, getting into your food, you would what? walk them out the door? do you think it's wrong to swat a fly?

oh--i almost forgot... we do have koi in our pond... and during the summer, a frog or two comes around to live in the pond... but i like the sound of the frog croaking against the sound of the pond's waterfall... especially at night... it's nice to fall asleep to...

I done my share of killing, including many pest pigeons. I just can’t understand the thought processes that leave you laughing at a pigeon with a dart through it’s head, however. Killing is serious work, do it well. or don’t even consider it.

i guess mouse traps are out of the question... we have a friend from church who is an exterminator, and he uses those sticky pads to kill mice... i suppose he shouldn't be using those...

the pigeon does not look to be in pain... i think bird poop is one of the most disgusting, vile things to ever have to come across... i cannot even look at it.. gross...
