I received one of those scam emails today, this one was different. It claimed to be from Bank of America concerning to many login attempts on my online account and that I was to go to their link and update my security info, the big problem is I don't have a Bank of America account and this email is remarkably similar to ones I have received about e-bay accounts etc. This is a scam intended to rip people off after obtaining secure info from the customer dumb enough to actually go to the link.
I need to report this and have forgotten who I should send this email to in order to report it. Can any of you help? Thanks in advance and sorry for the vanity
Forward it to:
abuse@bankofamerica.com
I also recd one from Citi something or other - also where I certainly don’t and wouldn’t have an account. I called them and they said, “Well, those things happen. Just report it to your ISP”. Was hit by a barrage of emails during the last month offering me wonderful career opportunities if I would just process the paperwork for them. Reported all of this to Earthlink fraud who issued their normal “Thank you” response but you never hear anything more. Appears no one is really concerned??
Presumably the email is directing you to some website as well. If you can find out who is hosting that website, (possibly with a WHOIS search), you can email the hosting company and get them shut down.
If you have no idea what I’m talking about and can post a link to the scam website, I’ll look it up.
Have you informed your Nigerian business partner?
Many service providers intercept these phishing spams. Getting rare anymore that one gets through.
Hmm, I wonder if that is why BofA sent me a new debit card out of the blue yesterday. All it said was that some accounts have been compromised....
I forward them to phishing-report@us-cert.gov
Thanks to all of you who have posted so far and to those who will post. Yes, to the one individual, I do understand what yu are talking about. I had just forgotten the link to the agency that will come down on these guys like a ton of bricks. Thanks again to all of you.
Phishing messages like this are a dollar a ton.
Still, it can’t hurt to forward it as directed upthread.
Please, everyone, don’t start a new thread every time you get a phishing email.
I almost replied, but the last minute I called because I was suspicious.
Still, it cant hurt to forward it as directed upthread.
Well, I get them all the time but this is a brand new one, to me anyway, and I thought I would pass it on to everyone and report it at the same time. My most common one, outside of the winning lotto or helping someone with an inherited fortune,is one that says my E-bay account needs to be updated. There are a ton of older people( I am old but not stupid) who fall for crap like this because they are sacred of losing what money they have. The bank thing seems particularly onerous to me.
Hey, jerk, I have posted like 5 vanities in all the time I have been a member of FR, unless you are an administrator I would advise you to STFU. This is a new scam, the email looks real, lots of old people could be fooled. Not only that, if you read my post you would see that the real reason I posted was to get the link to whomever I should report it too. I get these things everyday, but they are the ones people are used to. If you don’t want to read a post don’t click on it. Got it,(the only thing keeping me from typing a really dirty response to you are the rules of FR)fella?
When Bank of America cancelled my credit card, it had a limit of only $500. This was just before they said they would be issuing credit cards with limits of $500.00 to illegal immigrants. I sent them a note: “Go ahead and cancel my card, You must think an illegal needs the $500.00 more than me. No problemo!”......I will never do any business with them again. I now stick to only credit unions.
Please forward that e-mail to me. It sounds like I better go update my personal information, PIN and password. Thanks.
;-)
I received one from Bank of America back in mid December. I was out of the country at the time and had stopped at an internet cafe to check my mail. The next morning I called the bank from the ship I was on and reported it. Then when I returned home, I forwarded the message to them with full headers. I do have a Bank of America account, and previously had fraudulent charges on my Chase card, so I was a bit concerned when I opened the message. I never click on email links that pertain to any of my banking sites, and didn’t in this case either. The one thing that stood out was that the bulk of the message was in html, which is something that never occurred in any of my B of A emails before. That in itself made me think it was a fraud. And of course it was.
No worries, CSM. I can take care of that now. All I need from you is your 16 digit card number and the three digit "security code" on the back of your card. Expiration date and billing zip code will help me help you faster. Just reply here, no need to hassle with a private message or email.
Hey, who told you about that exclusive deal I have with the sister of the brother that has millions and needs me to help him get it out of the country?
Too late if you think you are going to horn in on my deal buddy! I already sent my Nigerian business partner the $5,000 so he can start the transfer. Hah! You think you are so smart. You are going to have to wake up pretty early to get ahead of me. I'll be sure and send you a post card from the resort island I am going to when the money comes.
LOL!
