From the show.......
Morgan said Kevin Harvick got him a car and he might be able to run better if he could just find some sponsorship and get some tires.

Matt said “Well, Tony and I are each going to get you a set of tires and maybe you can run Richmond”.

Morgan started to get choked up and started talking about what good friends they are and how he appreciates their help. He said sometimes he is driving down the road and starts thinking about everything the guys do for him and it brings a tear to his eye.

From Jayski...........

Stewart/Yocum to help Shephard at Richmond: Morgan Shepherd’s Faith Motorsports Dodge will hopefully be making a lot more trips around the Richmond International Raceway this weekend, thanks to the generosity of two of the veteran driver’s modern-day heroes. Two-time Sprint Cup Champion #20-Tony Stewart and broadcaster Matt Yocum will provide tire sponsorship to the #89 team this weekend in an effort to help Shepherd build on last week’s 13th place run at Talladega. Shepherd was a surprise call-in guest to the Tony Stewart Live radio show on SIRIUS NASCAR Radio on Monday evening, and before the conversation between Shepherd and the two hosts was over the duo had come aboard as tire sponsors for Friday night’s Lipton Tea 250 at Richmond. “You say you need some tires for this weekend,” Yocum said during the interview. “How about if Smoke and I each buy you a set of tires.” Stewart and Yocum said they would each set Shepherd up with a set of tires for this weekend’s 250-lap event at the .75-mile track at the Virginia State Fairgrounds. Stewart followed up by saying he would provide as many tires as Shepherd might need this weekend. Stewart went on to talk about how many modern-day fans of NASCAR don’t appreciate the personal dedication that Shepherd and many other racers from his era put into the sport. “I know how much you put into it personally and I can appreciate it,” Stewart said. “We’ll make sure you have plenty of tires for this weekend.”(PR)(4-30-2008)

Have fun...........It should be sold out.

Notes from Jr’s old PR guy now working for KHI.

Headed off to Richmond for Friday’s full day of action. It’s always a track I look forward to, so I figured I’d make a goofy list of my fave tracks to attend and a few reasons why. Your mileage may vary.

1.) Richmond — Nightmare traffic can hamper the experience, but there is absolutely no better racing at any other track on the circuit. Side-by-side action lap-after-lap. A short track that races like a superspeedway. Plus, they race at night, so watch the cars glitter, the pipes belch flames and the brakes glow cherry-red. A great atmosphere - and it’s really about the racing.

I’ve never been to a race at RIR, but I’ve lived in Richmond twice, and once around 1996, I got accidentally caught in Sunday morning raceday traffic on Laburnum Avenue headed toward the Fairgrounds. Oh man, never again. It’s a great facility, but access into the Fairgrounds complex is HORRIBLE. The only upside is that if you come in through Richmond on Laburnum, you get a nice slow drive through some very pretty old neighborhoods. And if that one morning is still any indication, you get a LOT of time to admire the houses...

Seems like most of the tracks have traffic problems, just too many people going to one place. :D

NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt, Jr. is now a Navy recruiter — and officials want to see if he meets a quota of 88 recruits by the end of August.

Recruits who sign up to attend boot camp as part of the “Dale Earnhardt Jr. Division” will ship to Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill., the week of Aug. 18-22.

Once the recruits go through in-processing, the division will be commissioned by Earnhardt, who is expected to join the recruits later in training, possibly for their BattleStations final exercise or the graduation ceremony.

snip~

Navy officials won’t start swearing in recruits the special division until May 24, when Earnhardt will drive a No. 83 Navy Monte Carlo SS race car decked out in a special paint scheme commemorating the recruit division in the CarQuest Auto Parts 300 race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte, N.C. — part of the Nationwide Series where JR Motorsports fields two teams.

I think I have every vinyl record Marty Robins ever put out. I was reading about a new cable network called RFD that is modeled after the old TNN out of Nashville. I hear that Shotgun Red will even be back...

Blue Angels on the #88 at Richmond: In honor of the U.S. Navy’s elite flight demonstration team, Brad Keselowski will drive the #88 Navy Blue Angels Chevy in Saturday’s Lipton Tea 250 Nationwide Series race at Richmond International Speedway. Instead of the usual “Dress White” paint scheme the Navy Chevy has sported throughout the 2008 season, the #88 will be blue and gold, just like the Blue Angels’ F/A-18 Hornets.(JR Motorsports PR)(4-30-2008)

My grand son is 19 and 2 of his buddies have enlisted in the Marines and 1 in the Navy. One of the Marines finished Boot Camp and now is stationed in Wash for training. On his leave home from BC he fell in love with a young mother of one so he had a 72 hour pass this past weekend. In his horny state he got a speeding ticket doing 103 MPH in Ore. The question is, should he quit the Marines or should he request oversea duty ASAP?

Historic TV Simulcast Calms Angry Fans

Thursday was a very interesting day in the history of NASCAR TV.

What began with an on-air scheduling problem for ESPN2 has resulted in move that can only be described as amazing.

The Internet posts began to appear early on Thursday detailing the fact that ESPN now had an NBA playoff game on Friday night that was going to have to be aired nationally. With ESPN busy, ESPN2 was going to be the only option.

The result was a decision by ESPN executives to move the Nationwide Series race at the Richmond International Raceway on Friday night to the ESPN Classic network.

This TV network served on many occasions in 2007 to handle NASCAR product when the two main ESPN networks were live with other sports events. The results for NASCAR were not good.

It was shortly after this network decision was announced that emails and phone calls began to pour into The Daly Planet that NASCAR was not happy. A highly-rated and much anticipated night race at RIR was going to be moved to a cable network with limited national distribution. So, the next question is...what to do about it?

That answer came just a bit later in the form of a mind-bending announcement from NASCAR and the TV networks involved.

Simply put, SPEED Channel will simulcast the entire ESPN production of the Nationwide Series race from Richmond.

“SPEED is happy to lend a hand to NASCAR and one of our fellow NASCAR television partners,” said SPEED President Hunter Nickell. “It’s a great way for SPEED and ESPN to come together to best serve the race fan.”

So, that means the Friday night race will be on both ESPN Classic and SPEED live for the fans with ESPN announcers and commercials.

Shortly after that email, things began to shake on the Internet front. As most fans know, Turner Interactive in Atlanta, GA is the company that runs NASCAR.com and has done so for years.

ESPN.com is the company’s website that serves almost every kind of sport and is one of the most highly-visited websites in the world.

On Friday night, both NASCAR.com and ESPN.com will “stream” the live broadcasts of the Nationwide Series race for free to all Internet users. This makes the race available on two TV networks and two Internet websites live.

Incredibly, that was not the end of this issue.
