Mexican national anthem played at De La Hoya fight (Carson, CA)
5/3/08

Posted on 05/03/2008 7:47:24 PM PDT by Mr. Mojo

Anyone watching this spectacle right now (on HBO)? The participants: Oscar De La Hoya vs. Steve Forbes (no, that that Steve Forbes). Venue: Carson, CA. Both fighters are and have have been American citizens, yet the Mexican national anthem was played before the bout. That would be expected if one of the fighters were a Mexican citizen or if the bout were held in Mexico, but neither is the case in this instance.

I've seen some nutty things at So. Cal sporting events. ...like the American national anthem booed at a U.S.A. vs. Mexico soccer match at the Coliseum in the late 90s where urine bombs were tossed at the American players by the overwhelmingly pro-Mexico crowd, but I've never see this.

I suspect one day in the not-to-distant future the Mexican anthem will be standard fare at American sporting events.

I hope De La Hoya (who promoted the fight as well) gets his red, white, and green ass kicked.

Delahoya is an American? I think he is.

Is he fighting out of Juarez or Albuquerque?

Well you’re gonna laugh at this, I live in northern California in a town called Walnut Creek, and at my sister’s graduation someone had the nerve to wave a mexican flag.

lol...yeah, I’m sure Savage noticed it.

3rd round now. ...boring fight. DLH chose his opponent carefully — this is just a tune-up for his upcoming fight with Floyd Mayweather.

Delahoya is an American?

Born and raised in East L.A., and last I heard he still lives in the L.A. area somewhere. ....although far from his old 'hood, not surprisingly.

I know I saw him fighting in N.M.

Oops, sorry about the typos in the vanity. Always happens when I’m watching the tube and Freeping simultaneously...

Forbes looks like he’s out there just to collect a payday.

I suspect one day in the not-to-distant future the Mexican anthem will be standard fare at American sporting events.

The Canadian national anthem is often performed at hockey games in the US and their flag is usually hung from the rafters of most rinks.

Having said that, I understand the difference. I've been living in Homestead, FL for the last 18 months (only 3 more days to go).

The Canandian National Antherm is played whenever the Blue Jays or Expos play stateside. No big deal.

Big difference. Those are Canadian teams playing in the U.S. Neither of the participants in this fight are from Mexico.

The song is played every night in LA! De La Hoya needs to play it because that is where he gets his under age girls from.

I’ve never seen that facility in Carson. Is it (relatively) new?

Last round coming up. DLH is (unfortunately) cruising to an easy victory here, winning every round on my scorecard but one.

He lives in Big Bear. Drove by his house some years back and he was working out in the front yard.

Honked and waved and he waved back with a big smile on his face.

Thanks.

120 - 108, 119 - 109, 119 - 109. A rout.

Quite a star-studded audience for such a (less-than-anticipated) matchup.

L.A. used to regularly host some best fights in the country at the Olympic Auditorium, and later the L.A. Forum.

I was watching that, it struck me as odd. I wasn’t paying that much attention, but I did think, “wait a minute, he doesn’t even have an accent, why are they playing the Mexican National Anthem?”

On the other hand, the guys who performed the Mexican National Anthem played it straight, and respectful. The bimbo who did the American National Anthem was awful, why couldn’t she just sing it straight? The last fight I saw, Tom Jones sang the Welsh National Anthem, he sang it great (and if anyone could mess with it, he could have) but whoever sang ours was once again awful. It’s not that, as some profess, our anthem is hard to sing - it is, BUT - this is about people who choose to mess it up and make it awful. Just sing it, that’s all.

Agree completely — our own anthem is mangled more often than not at sporting events these days. Improvisation is great for jazz, but it doesn’t work for the national anthem.

WHY?

Oscar de la Hoya is actually not well-liked by almost anyone who can claim descent from Mexico--legal or not!

I asked about this when it happened.

Oscar has been pandering to Mexican Americans for years. The location of this fight, the cost of the bottom end tickets and th Mexican National Anthem were all just a symptom. Oscar has never been able to handle the fact that large segments of the Mexican American community not only haven’t embraced him, they sincerely dislike him. He is desperate for the love of a group that has generally shunned him.
