A Dane County sheriff's deputy stopped a jail inmate from committing suicide Monday night after finding the inmate with a sheet tied around his neck.
According to the sheriff's office, the incident happened about 11 p.m. Monday.
"The deputy found the inmate attempting to strangle himself," said sheriff's office spokeswoman Elise Schaffer. "He was able to untie the sheet from around the man's neck, enabling the inmate to get oxygen."
The inmate was conscious but turning blue and gasping for air. Jail medical staff responded and assisted in stabilizing the inmate.
The inmate was transported to UW Hospital, and while at the hospital the inmate became combative and had to be shackled and secured to the gurney. No hospital staff or deputies were injured.
After being released from the hospital, the inmate was placed in a segregation cell at the Public Safety Building, monitored every 15 minutes by deputies.
He's in jail on a probation hold awaiting trial on numerous new charges.

When he became combative, they could have sedated him by applying a choke hold. It seems to be what he wanted.

Little thing called liability.
The failed suicides parents, wife, children, etc. would have sued the pants off of the county if their misguided darling came to harm in the sheriffs custody. And rightly so.
You deprive a man of his freedom, you take responsibility for his safety and wellbeing.

Thanks for being sane, I was wondering what was going on at this site lately. Everyone wants the death penalty for every offense. Easy to say if you have never been in handcuffs....

I'm just having a particularly lucid day.
Tomorrow I may very well be the one crying "Off with their heads!"
I think a lot of people are just fed up with the lenient treatment most criminals appear to be receiving and give into their frustration and anger. It's cathartic to let it out even if it is just typing something to complete strangers you would otherwise never let see the light of day.
