BB drew the 7 slot, should make things interesting. I sure hope his trainer has got him used to having mud kicked in his face. I’m pulling for him. I’m not sure how he’ll fare tomorrow. I think he’s going to clean up at Belmont.

Of course. I love animals (most of them). But the sport isn't all that dangerous to horses. We have a better chance at getting killed or killing someone else in our cars than they do getting serious injured on the racetrack. Yet I don't think anyone would ever consider we ban automobiles because of this. Then again, we at least have a choice in the matter. They unfortunately do not, although they definitely do love to run, but maybe not to the point of exhaustion under the whip. Have to admit, it does bother me sometimes too. As a teen I worked at a couple of racetracks (Belmont, Aqueduct, Hialeah and Calder) and the horses are actually very well cared for between races. Most of the time they just hang out in their stalls checking out their peaceful country-like surroundings and munching on horse snacks. Quite a few of the people who work with them love them like their own children.

On another thread today I mistook someone’s joke as being serious — because I thought the topic in question (Obama’s integrity) was very serious! But I assure you that I was kidding on this thread. I am truly grateful that JimRob’s efforts have given us this place to exchange political and non-political ideas.

“I sure hope his trainer has got him used to having mud kicked in his face.”

Bright and sunny here in Baltimore. Windy too.
Track should be fast, turf yielding.

Well, off to the track I go.

But even if the track were sloppy (thanks for the latest weather report saying it will be fast), if anyone is going to get mud kicked into their face, it would be the others in this field trying to keep up with this speedy monster, Big Brown.

Good luck today, and keep an eye on that minus show pool for BB. If he runs off the board, big show payoffs for anyone else that finishes 1, 2 or 3. Possibly $15-20.00 or more. Not very likely of course, but certainly worth an insurance wager.

What’s happening to Free Republic?

This forum has had threads on all of the Triple Crown races for as long as I can remember. I get more information on the horses and races here than I do at the individual track sites or anywhere else (thanks all!).

BTW, Go Big Brown! He may not be the best horse to contend for the Triple Crown in recent years, and he may be a fine horse in a weak year. But, I just want to see a Triple Crown winner again before I die...:-)

Did you see his 4 starts in the video I provided at the top? This horse may absolutely be another Big Red (Big Brown, Big Red) I've been around racetracks for a long time and have rarely seen such talant. This horse cuts early fractions like a sprint champion, then somehow has enough left in the stretch to power away from the field like a hard charging closer. I think he is very special.

Did you watch his amazing first race ever? It was on the grass and he was 14-1. You will not believe it. The rest of his races are similarly incredible. But you’re right about last year’s crop: Curlin, Street Sense, Hard Spun, on and on. It was a spectacular group.

Perhaps Free Republic should expand its scope and include threads on roulette, black jack, and slot machines.

For years there has been an entire Religion Forum, and sports contests are often on the Chat Forum, sometimes the News/Activism forum. We have had lengthy threads discussing movie awards shows, commenting on the evening gowns.

You've been here for 3 years and never noticed this?

Within like 100 yrds he pulled six lengths out, and the jockey never even pushed him!

Outstanding horse.

These have been the most dominating performances I’ve seen since ‘73 (Secretariat). ....although Spectacular Bid’s first two legs (in ‘79) were close. Short of accident/injury I can’t see Big Brown not taking home the first Triple Crown in 30 years.

I agree This horse is very rateable. Slows down without having to choke him back and then goes when asked just with the hands. The first 1/4 was 23 2/5 and that was a fast 1/4.He could have contested but instead chose to back off and lose 2 length and go around and then just stride to the front like he owned it.

Very few horses have the extra gears and can be slowed and sped up that easy and this is his 5th race. Acts very experienced and he hasn't had the experience.

Unless this Japanese horse we are hearing about there isn't any other 3 yr colts that have his speed and stamina. He did not sweat up in the Derby or the Preakness. Plus his stride is easy and glides over the dirt not through it . That is good since he has that 1/4 crack that had to be grown out and probably hasn't yet. Takes a year to growth a full hoof.

Perhaps. But, over the years, I've participated in threads on the NFL playoffs and Super Bowl, horse racing, NBA games and the like. It's a nice break from thinking about how screwed-up our country is. This year, for instance, it appears there may be a Triple Crown winner for the first time in 30 years. That's something that many hardcore politicos here enjoy as much as the McCain-Obama debacle. No betting necessary...:-)
