American Spectator: The Worst Republican Senator (Lindsey Graham)
American Spectator ^

The Worst Republican Senator Quin Hillyer Published 5/15/2008 12:08:02 AM

South Carolina's Lindsey Graham is a flop. He pretends to be a conservative, but sells out conservatives and insults them while doing so. He pretends to be effective at reaching across party lines, but the only thing he effectively does is help the other party. He inhabits the Senate seat of Strom Thurmond, legendary for great attention to his South Carolina constituents, but Graham spends most of his time trailing behind John McCain like a valet as McCain criss-crosses the country in pursuit of the presidency. He called Ted Kennedy "one of the most principled men I've ever met." In sum, in the words of conservative movement stalwart Richard Viguerie, "Lindsey Graham is part of the problem."

What, for example, could possibly have possessed Graham, in April of 2006, to write an essay for Time magazine about the virtues of Hillary Clinton? He called her "a smart, prepared, serious senator." She is "sought out by her colleagues to form legislative partnerships." She has managed to "build unusual political alliances with...conservatives."

He praises liberals, but reserves particular venom for conservatives who disagree with him. The most infamous example came at a speech to the utterly radical Hispanic group La Raza -- it was bad enough that he spoke to them, much less what he said -- when he described what he would do to opponents of the awful immigration proposal he helped Ted Kennedy craft: "We're going to tell the bigots to shut up." The idea that only a bigot could oppose the Kennedy amnesty plan was a recurring theme with Graham: On This Week, he told George Stephanopoulos that opponents were like those in earlier years who put up signs that said "No Catholics, no Jews, no Irish need apply.".........

I think Mel Martinez would give Goober a run for his money in the looser catagory.

I was so hopeful when he was elected. A microcosm of what has become of the GOP revolution.

I wonder what happened to this guy anyway. He used to be a conservative. It’s almost as though he got a lobotomy or something. Maybe his was one of those 640 FBI files that the Clintonistas got their paws on.

Lindsey Graham is gay. He has been under pressure from that gay group who takes pleasure in outing gay Republicans, especially if they don’t support gay marriage. It all started during the impeachment trial, when they called Graham, light in the loafers. He joined McCain and the other gay Republicans to gain cover because McCain didn’t support the anti-gay marriage ammendment.

That’s what happened to Lindsey Graham.

“Soon to be vice president?”

If McCain chooses Lindsey Graham as his running mate, I will absolutely be voting Democrat in the upcoming Presidential election.

The kind of destruction those two could wreak on the Republican Party and the convervative momvement is just unacceptable.

I’m not one of those “cut off my nose to spite my face” people. I’d vote for McCain by himself, particularly as we’d only see four years of him. With a better vice presidential candidate, absolutely. But elevating Graham to that level of power? Not in a million years. It could potentially throw the movement off for a decade or more.

If Condi will take it, she'll get it. She'll be used as the counterweight to Obama. And I'll admit, though she's no conservative, she'd be a hell of a lot better than Graham.

By the increasingly socialist standards of the GOP nowadays that means he is a conservative.

That's a description of every senator in Washington. Stevens is a bit of a dunce ("the Internet is like a series of tubes") but he's usually there when a conservative vote is needed.

They're playing them here in the Upstate, too. I'm glad they're running them because it's a helpful reminder of who the enemy is.

Pansey Graham is with the enemy.

BTW, I quit the Republican party. Had enough.

South Carolina knew, or strongly suspected, he was gay--they just figured as long as it was not a central issue, and he would represent a conservative state as he promised--they voted for him. South Carolinians all know Mrs. Grundy's son who operates the flower shop is "sweet" but they wouldn't hurt Mrs. Grundy's feelings for the world and they buy the Homecoming mums from her son. That's called minding your own business--and we expect the florist to do the same.

"Bigots" indeed.

Yes, I think that everyone more or less knew that Lindsey was gay, and as long as he was doing a good job, no one cared. He should have just come out and admitted that he was gay and said that it was a private matter and would not interfere with the job that he does for the people of South Carolina. He should not have let the gay lobby bully him into the McCain camp.

He doesn’t show much evidence of being unwillingly in the McCain camp. I laughed at how the writer of this compared Lindsey to a valet.
