This is totally non-political, and totally pro-Dog. I need your insights on what can MAKE a dog Sneeze! We do breed rescue. Our current foster, Vinnie , the basset is seizure-prone. Weve seen a Doggy sneeze end seizures in our prior pooches.
Any Freepers remembered hints on what household items might induce a seizured Basset to Sneeze, post and send direct to Jwilson571@cox.net.
Irish Spring soap works on our Boxer , but not on Vinnie.
Black pepper?
Goose down? Cat’s hair brush, post-brushing? Cat litter, the dusty kind? Spicey powder or any kind of powder? Cigarette smoke? I’ve read that what makes people sneeze makes dogs sneeze.
(And smile on commandthough it was a kind of Dick Cheney smile).
:)
Is Vinnie epilepleptic? On medication? Seeing a Vet?
You might try Ocular Compression (OC) to shorten a seizure or even prevent a seizure. OC is kind of like CPR where you apply gentle pressure to the closed eyes with thumbs or fingers. 5 seconds of pressure then release for about 10 seconds. This sequence is repeated over and over. This can shorten the seizure and recovery time after a seizure. If Vinnie displays signs that a seizure is going to happen OC prior to the seizure may prevent a seizure.
I found that cayenne pepper works well.
My neighbors boxer was continually using my yard, leaving large piles. The owner said hed stop it but nothing happened. I started dusting the area with cayenne. The dog would come into the yard, sniff once, sneeze and run.
He no longer uses my yard.
Tried beer? My lab used to sneeze his head off after a few laps. I think it was the carbonation. You could try ginger ale or something else like that.
My Rotti sneezes and runs out of the room as fast as he can whenever I use hair spray.
Hannah, my Shelty, sneezes when she’s mad or frustrated. If I don’t pick up on the fact that she needs to go outside, she starts walking around the room sneezing her head off. Same goes if I’m late getting home from work.
I CAN HAZ SNEEZEBURGER?
I gently “bop” my dog on the nose with the palm of my hand several times - works every time to make him sneeze. Granted, I do it to clear out gunk in his nose from digging in the dirt, but it should work for your guy, too. Good luck!
Yes, he has been on Phenobarbital since BEFORE entering “rescue”. He now has Valium available to combat “seizure swarms”. He is much better, NOW!
