President Lincoln writes Ellsworth's parents, "So much of promised usefullness to one's country, and of bright hopes for one's self and friends, have rarely been so suddenly dashed, as in his fall."
Confederate President Jefferson Davis writes to a committee of Maryland legislators thanking them for their sympathies for the cause of "the right of Self-Government".
Union forces destroy seven miles of bridges and rail lines between Alexandria and Leesburg, VA.
The Confederate steamer Thomas Collyer is captured by the USS Pawnee at Alexandria, VA.
The USS Minnesota captures the Confederate ship Winfred off Hampton Roads, VA.
1862:
Confederate forces under Stonewall Jackson rout Union troops under Gen. Nathaniel Banks at Winchester, VA. The Confederates only suffer 400 casualties to the Union's at just over 2,000. The Confederates also capture a large number of weapons and supplies and give Gen. Banks the new nickname, "Commisary Banks." Banks and his army retreat towards the safety of the north bank of the Potomac river.
President Lincoln informs Gen. Geoge McClellan, "I think the time is near when you must either attack Richmond or give up the job and come to the defense of Washington."
Confederate Gen. Pierre G.T. Beauregard decides to abandon Corinth, MS.
Union and Confederate gunboats exhance fire near the James and Dixon Island at Charleston Harbor.
1863:
Federals detonate a mined tunnel through the Confederate lines around Vicksburg only to discover in the aftermath that additional defensive lines lie beyond it.
Union forces attacking Port Hudson, LA seize the Confederate steamers Starlight and Red Chief on the Mississippi River.
The CSS Alabama captures the Union ship Gildersleeve off the coast of Brazil.
Peace Democrat Clement Vallandigham is released from prison for his deportation to the Confederacy.
1864:
The Army of the Potomac begins moving east from it's positions on the North Anna River towards Cold Harbor, VA.
Union Gen. David Hunter is ordered to advance his troops down the Shenandoah Valley with the objective of capturing Lynchburg, VA.
At New Hope Church, GA, Union Gen. Joseph Hooker's XX corps are repulsed by Confederate troops under John Bell Hood.
A Federal naval expedition up the Ashepoo and South Edisto Rivers in South Carolina is abandoned when they fail to make contact with army troops.
An attempt to sink the CSS Albemarle in the Roanoke River by towing torpedoes next to it fails when a sentry spots the attempt.
1865:
An explosion of Confederate gunpowder at Mobile, AL results in over 300 casualites.
Men from the USS Owasco occupy Sabine Pass, TX.
The CSS Columbia is towed to Hampton Roads, VA by the USS Vanderbilt.
Has anyone sought genealogy information to see whether this was an ancestor of John Murtha?

Why? Vallandigham was a principled man and a defender of the constitution. Murtha is a rank opportunist who would sell his own mother for political advantage. If such things run in the blood then surely it would make more sense to ponder possible ties to Lincoln.

Hey you can’t blame McClellan for being cautious. After all he was facing a Confederate army numbering over 20 million men /s :)
I thought Pinkerton had it at 30 million :)
Pinkerton should have been given a medal by the Confederate congress.

I read that the Antietam battlefield is in danger.
A fair part of it stretching from the Cornfield down past Burnside's Bridge is part the the National Park Service. That which isn't is probably lost.
Sad thing to see.
