Is anyone else using Avast Free Virus Scan getting a Trojan alert on Super Anti Syyware.exe command? I'm getting it on the boot up scan and Avast has no way of marking it a false positive. Warning shows Win32: Trogan-Gen with no anme associated except the Spyware program.
Never experienced any problems of this nature with AVAST!
I’ve got a false hit on Super Anti Spyware with every anti-virus I’ve run. So much so that I deleted Super Anti Spyware from my system.
Thanks I had a feeling it was a false hit. Just wanted to make certain. Trend Micro didn’t show it but sure messed thing up in other ways though. I had about 5 complete freeze ups {new computer} which stopped when I uninstalled Micro Trend and the blasted thing kept locking up Outlook Express in the MSIM {?} function when switching OE users. I’d have to close MSIM process to get OE back then the Micro Trend toolbar would be gone till re-boot.

AVAST sounds like it would be made BY pirates!
Paid version of AVG scans POP3 mail.
Thanks. I’ve read The new version of AVG {Free} is kinda hard on resources which also was a reason I went to Avast. I assumed the pay would be also. I used AVG for several years on another computer with no problem though. Having a virus scan without e-mail scan protection even free is insane. AVG hurt themselves there.
I have the whole AVG internet security package. I love it. No stress on resources. I also use Diskeeper that defrags my HD on a real-time basis. Never have to do a defrag.
I just installed Avast, and it marked my Solarwinds TFTP server as being infected, as well as an old SQL Server cleaning tool that I downloaded a long time ago from Symantec as being infected.
While I don’t need that cleaning tool, I do use the tftp server. I guess I’ll download the latest and greatest (it’s free-ware) and see if it lets me install it.

Thanks. I’m on dial up so the free trial about 55MB would take a spell. Anymore conflicts though and I’ll likely do it. So far Avast sure beats Micro Trend. A new computer with factory installs shouldn’t freeze up and I’m certain that was the culprit causing it. That’s when my virus scan search began.
I let it quarantine the tftp server program. It's pretty old, so I'm downloading the latest version, and I'll see if Avast will let me install it. If not, I'll be upset. I'm about 99.99999% sure this was a false positive.

Just curious are you running AVG 7.5 or 8.0 Security Package? The one that some seem to have issue with is the new AVG 8.0.
Is AVG better than ZoneAlarm?
I purchased the 7.5 and they offered the upgraded to 8 for free. It is the Internet Security 8 version. I like it and have had no problems. I have 2 computers so I purchased the 3-license one—can’t remember cost maybe $80.
I really don’t know. If you google reviews you will see what they say. PC-Review or CNET.
Spybot when running seems to be my heaviest user at 50% CPU while scanning. After it stops scanning I'm back in sigle digits with all normal background programs going.
I downloaded the paid version of SpyBlaster and quit using it. I rely solely on AVG (it has everything) and have had no problem with it. I have 4GB Ram XPS 720 on broadband. Sorry for your dial-up.
A new thing AVG does is it puts a nice green checkmark beside safe Google hits you might want to open to indicate they are safe.
Hey Mark,
I just updated my Avast (to ver. 4.8.1201) and upon restart, it flagged my Superantispyware as a Trojan. I didn’t find anything on the Avast website so I sent them an email.
I’m also not sure if it is a false hit or a valid flag. I’ve been running Avast for over a year with no problems. This might not amount to much but two weeks prior, I got hit with the AWOLA virus. YES, Avast was installed and running. After researching and installing Superantispyware, I was able to eradicate the AWOLA virus.
I guess we will see how this turns out, but conspircy theorists would have a field day with this one.
Why would I, (why the xxxx Should I) remove superantispyware when it eradicated an attack that Avast didn’t detect OR even prove a remedy for.
rant for now,
skevin
Well, I was able to install the newest version of Solarwinds tftp server. I would imagine that it’s just a false positive.
Thanks and good luck.

Anti-virus software is becoming so bloated and inefficient, it is becoming a security risk itself. The situation will only get worse on Windows as the footprint of AV software continues to grow.
As other OS grow attacks on them too will become more common. With Windows though there has to be a balance as to what is practical and what becomes overkill. Hackers and Virus creator simply look for large targets. The largest user target now is WINDOWS.
BTW Micro Trend also gave my Firefox Browser a fit. Seems I had several problems and Micro Trend created quite a lot of them. I'd like to have Super anti-spyware back but SPYBOT is doing a pretty good job keeping things out.
It's not that simple. They look first for the targets with weak security. The weakest target is WINDOWS.
It is that simple. Nobody writes a virus that doesn't have anywhere to replicate to.
Windows is so easy to attack, it's almost trivial. Why waste a bunch of time in a futile effort to write an effective virus for Linux or Mac OS X when Windows is so easy to infect?
Why wast time in a futile effort to write a virus that's going to have maybe one chance in a million connections of finding something it can infect?
