Word For The Day, Wednesday, May 28, 2008 - heliolatry
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Word of the Day ^ | 05/28/2008 | The Janitor

Posted on 05/28/2008 5:59:38 AM PDT by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

heliolatry • \hee-lee-AH-luh-tree\ • noun

sun worship

Example sentence:

The Egyptians, who personified the sun as the god Ra, were one of numerous ancient cultures that practiced heliolatry.

Did you know?
The first half of "heliolatry" derives from "hēlios," the Greek word for "sun." In Greek mythology, Hēlios was the god of the sun, imagined as "driving" the sun as a chariot across the sky. From "hēlios" we also get the word "helium," referring to the very light gas that is found in balloons and airships, and "heliocentric," meaning "having or relating to the sun as center," as in "a heliocentric orbit." The suffix "-latry," meaning "worship," derives via Late Latin and French from the Greek "latreia," and can be found in such words as "bardolatry" ("worship of Shakespeare") and "zoolatry" ("animal worship"). A person who worships the sun is called a heliolater.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Good Morning Class. Welcome to School!

Here is my example with today's WFTD.

Algore and his climate change crowd have less scientific credibility than those who practice heliolatry, yet they arrogantly insist that the science is already settled.

Czech President Klaus ready to debate Gore on climate change

No pushing at the door please!

Happy Humpday Everybody!

xsteen wants to buy this movie she saw again this weekend and said it is hilarious from beginning to end. She's the Man. She showed me the trailer and it felt very lucilleballish to me. i will watch it but i don't think i will find it as funny.

Amanda Bynes decides to take her brother's place at his school, I think to play soccer with the exclusive "boys" team.

Harmless, if formulaic. It's no "Harold and Kumar go to Whte Castle"

Bill Clinton, democrat sun god, was the center of their cult of heliolatry. Based upon his treatment of women, “heeliolatry” would have been more appropriate.

Then based on the movie Shakespeare in Love, in which he fell in love with the girl who (pretending to be a boy so she could act in the Elizabethan theater) played Juliet, Shakespeare was a lesbian. There’s all sorts of gender confusion going on here.

At first one wonders how one could believe in heliolatry, but if you consider how many people believe the myths of "Recount" so intensely that it bring back their PEST (post election selection trauma), you see that some people will believe anything.

To paraphrase an old song writer
“See you later, heliolater”
Then after a while,
With a crocodile smile
Rubbing her skin with cocoa butter.

Sun is shinin’ in the sky,
There ain’t a cloud in sight
It’s stopped rainin’
Everybody’s in a play
And don’t you know
It’s a beautiful new day.

Runnin’ down the avenue,(Pant, Pant, Pant)
See how the sun shines brightly
In the city on the streets
Where once was pity,
Mr. Blue Sky is living here today.

(Chorus:)
Mr. Blue Sky, please tell us why,
You had to hide away
For so long where did we go wrong.

Hey there Mr. Blue
We’re so pleased to be with you
Look around see what you do,
Everybody smiles at you.

Hey you with the pretty face,
Welcome to the human race
A celebration Mr. Blue Sky’s
Up there waitin’ and today
Is the day we’ve waited for

(Chorus)

Mr. Blue you did it right,
But soon comes Mr. Night,
Creepin’ over, now his
Hand is on your shoulder,
Never mind I’ll remember you this way.

(Chorus)

Lombard Ave is on the near east side, close to St. Mary’s Hospital. Ritzy neighborhood, where all the Radiologists and Neurosurgeons live. Chez Cholerique is on the northern fringe, out by the Interplanetary Spaceport and the plastics factories.

We are overcast and drizzly here so heliolatry is not possible. I was trying to get the kiddo his driver permit but the school said we cannot pick up his attendance record until tomorrow morning. I think it would take her all of 5 minutes to do it but she said she was in another database and had too much other work to do today. I am mildly huffy about her attitude. Granted, I didn’t know I needed this until I called the license office this morning. Still...

Don’t you have paralegals or assistant to do that kind of stuff? I thought all y’all wrote notes on those long yellow notepads.

the court requires attorneys to file this stuff online, which is why we have to learn how to do it. we have paralegals and secretaries and they always filed the paper stuff, but we have to do this and it is driving me nuts. we have to get 90% right on the online quiz. i got 70% the first time and 80% the second time, i have no idea which one i am getting wrong! we haven’t used a yellow legal pad to write a brief in this millenium. secretaries used to type the briefs from the yellow pads on a typewriter, can you imagine?

oh thank the Lord, i got 100% on the third try. i dread the first time i have to actually file something this way. i know one of my colleagues spent an entire day trying to file a motion in the 10th circuit, a week or two ago.

you know, you’d think they would take that into consideration. out-sourcing is a definite issue here, and i try to use the paralegals as often as i can, so they can justify their jobs.

i had to file something in the Third Circuit a few weeks back and was whirling like a dang dervish trying to ascertain whether they still took paper filings, which they did and i was extremely grateful. the world needs more luddites. half the quiz dealt with what you do about personal identifying information like account #s and SS#s, and what to do if you file something incorrectly or by mistake.

He is too afraid to even step out the back door into the fenced yard. He prefers lusting after the plump juicy birdies from the inside of the kitchen window. We may have rodents soon too. The youngest is jonesing for a gerbil.
