Next batch of tracks may end shortcomings of past - (NASCAR, The Next Generation)

And then there's Phoenix International Raceway, the iconic desert mile nestled at the base of the Estrella Mountains outside of town. While it's renowned for producing great racing, the 44-year-old facility lacks most of the comforts of the other, newer stadiums in the greater Phoenix market. The vast majority of its 76,812 grandstand seats are simple aluminum bleachers. With the exception of suites spanning the first two turns and a tunnel that replaced a pedestrian bridge, this rather austere facility still looks very much like it did decades ago. In a city famous for its sports stadiums, Phoenix's racetrack seems stuck in time.

Caraviello is an idiot. He needs to get out of his office and head down to PIR sometime. I’ve noticed BIG changes at PIR over the past 10 years. Many of them are things that I don’t like. Valet parking, “Octane” with it’s sushi and other artsy fartsy stuff. Give me the “aluminum bleachers” and a beer anyday. That’s what NASCAR is. Stock car racing. Watching women leaving the track in evening gowns, YES, EVENING GOWNS and high heels just seems a little goofy to me.

NASCAR is quickly going downhill. The winner of the Truck race yesterday bragged about getting his toenails painted...even Mikey commented that, “somewhere Junior Johnson just threw up” and Mikey ain’t exactly normal.

I read that he’s a former Formula 1 racer, so I think that explains it. ;-)

Here’s an idea - how about more tracks where cars turn left AND right? What a concept! :P

Ahem. Nascar hasn’t been “stock car” racing since the 80s.

Or maybe you can tell what option to check at the Ford dealer so I can buy a 2 door tube frame V8 RWD Ford Fusion???

Now with the “Car Of Tomorrow” the only difference is the badges and advertising on them - and no “stock car” at all.

I agree. Check out the crap in this picture from after the NCTS race. This kind of crap isn't going to help keep the old timers like myself at the track.

Yeah. I tried to get NASCAR to change their name to National Association for Car Of Tomorrow Racing but they said that NACOTR was too hard for the younger fans to say. They decided to keep NASCAR as the name for their association.

Might as well call it NASCRASH, since that’s really what they’re doing. Lord knows that it’s not racing.

It hasn’t been racing since the COT showed up. It’s like watching one of those kiddie car carousels at a carnival. Kyle Busch isn’t helping matters any. Every week it’s the same old thing. Everyone else follows Kyle around the track.

This guy has no clue about what makes sports fun. The average NASCAR fan is a bleacherbum. We love the bleacher seats in stadiums, yelling at the drivers/players and taunting the other team.

When I go to a sporting event I like the cheap seats as it is one of the only times in my life when I can be a complete idiot and not get strange looks.

I’m perfectly happy with aluminum bench seats.

I think someone doesn’t really know race fans. LOL

We stayed at the Orlando Hilton (part of the package) for Daytona this spring. They had a black tie ball Saturday night with arrivals coming in about the same time we came back from the Busch Nationwide race. I know I thoroughly enjoyed watching their reaction to 500 rednecks invading their space. :)

Problem is, we're spoiled by many of the tracks that were built in the last 20 years. If you've seen tracks like Texas Motor Speedway, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Kansas Speedway, etc. and the major renovations done at Lowe's Motor Speedway, Talledega and Daytona, the grandstands are mostly individual seating and there are lots of luxury suites on these tracks.

To get the "old school" feel of NASCAR track, you have to go to either Martinsville or Richmond race tracks.
