New York, NY (AHN) - A survey of 2,520 executive made by a New York-based online job search website said office cursing topped the reasons why bosses fire employees.
According to TheLadders.com, 38 percent of the respondents to the online survey pointed to violation of office etiquette, primarily using cuss words, as their number one reason for terminating workers.
The was followed by drinking on the job, which came second with 35 percent, and excessive personal calls during office hours as third, with 28 percent.
But from the worker's perspective, there is a worst sin than cursing. TheLadder said 81 percent viewed swearing as an improper office behavior, but a higher 98 percent said the worst office crime was to steal food from the office refrigerator.
There are some work environments that encourage cursing, said Rick Gillis, author of "Really Useful Job Search Tactics". He cited the lumberyard where swearing is common place. "If you weren't contributing to it, you weren't part of the gang... It was sort of a competition thing," Gillis said, quoted by the Houston Chronicle.
Timothy Jay, a psychology professor at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams and author of two books on cursing, discovered in a study that men curse more often than women, except for sorority members. Librarians and staff of the university day care center were less likely to swear compared to the school's provosts.
Jay explained that for many people, cursing is a coping mechanism that helps them reduce stress. "It's a form of anger management that is often underappreciated," Jay told the New York Times.

ROFLMAO!

It use to be that cursing was only used in bars and in private. People think I am weird because I refuse to swear in mixed company. It even seems the fairer sex has developed a filthy mouth.

I've worked at companies where swearing and emailing joke nude photos and porno is de rigeur, and if you didn't participate, you weren't “cool” and accepted, whereas the same thing at a government office or most other companies would get you booted in a nanosecond. Different cultures. I recall a comedian saying something like: “Sexual harassment is whatever the office lesbian says it is.”

#1 is outshining your supervisor, and the guy who promoted him. Especially if you do it 3x in the same year.

Discovered over the years, that, at first, my refusal to use inappropriate language and my penchant for walking away when I realized that the joke being shared was less than clean, got chuckles. As time would go by, however, the inappropriate language and the blue jokes became less and less (at least when I was near).
Never preached or criticized, just didnt participate

Our office installed “cameras” aimed at the fridge cause stuff was missing. It took us all of ten minutes to figure out they were fakes. Then they got mad when the ones we found online were cheaper than the ones they bought. Then they went and got real cameras. They are real cause I’ve seen the video.

I had to fire a woman who swore incessantly when I managed a store in a mall. She shouted and swore at her boyfriend on the phone and she could be heard all the way down the hall in the Disney store. Mall management gave us an ultimatum after complaints.

Not incompetence? Not stealing? Cursing?
I guess using that standard the Yankees would have fired Paul O’Neill and missed out on 4 World Series championships.

When the employee was notified, that's when all the cussing started.

So, I suppose calling your girlfriend and saying "Holy f$#% I'm drunk!" would guarantee an escorted trip out the door.

I put green food dye in my food during the short time I worked in an office. I tried other colors but green was by far the best. I learned this in college with roommates.
To: popdonnelly
That’s pretty funny.
I have only known three or so women who cussed as a regular part of their discourse. But they are out there.
I’m fairly new at work, and I notice that cussing is rare. It’s a G-rated place.
So, I don’t cuss at work.
