For those of you running Vista, and have not set their systems to automatically download updates, I may have some good news for you. Today, my system DLed the SP1 for Vista, (It's large), and after installing and rebooting, many programs that opened/ran sluggishly, now start and perform, the way one would expect they'd run on a less than 1 yr old PC with 2 gigs of RAM.
Do you have to be logged in?
I down loaded it last week and had to use system restore to get rid of it . It kept shutting down due to encountering some difficulty . I guess you have had no such problems . Any advice would be appreciated .
On your programs menu, there will be a ‘Windows Update’ link.
The Propts will guide you through the update procedure.
There is no extra charge. You only need to have an ‘Activated’
Vista system. As far as having yoour system set up for automated downloads, thats in your system preferences.
But Broadband is really a necessity as, (don’t hold me to it) the SP1 is about 65 MBs?? *Large*. and that would take some serious DL hours on a 56K modem.
Can’t say I know why it worked for me, and not you.
Sorry to hear it did not solve your problems, but it sure cleared up some aggravations for me. Last week i was seriously looking at trying to find out if I could get a “downgrade” disk to XP from my PCs Manufacturer, as it’s a laptop with lots of custom programs on it, that i’d have had to have found work arounds, if I just bought a retail copy of XP. and finally gave up on the idea.
Any ideas?
OK, What version of Vista are you running? Is this new or older hardware? Do you have a sound card or video card, or is it all on-board? etc... I know there are some documented problems with certain INTEL on-board chip sets, so even if you don’t give me this information, I would recommend making sure that all of your system drivers are up to date previous to the installation.
The only thing that comes to mind, is perhaps there is something wrong with your Vista activation key. And that you’s have to call MSs Activation number to check out.
Someone didn’t by any chance load your OS on another PC did they?
You are able to download files from other sites without problems? Your Security program isn’t set up to block the site? Are you behind a ccompany firewall?
Does it patch Vizduh back to XP?
24” iMac...What is that?...about 3 grand and up?
Glad it worked, I got Service Pack 1 last week and installed it without problems.
The computer works fine and I have no issues or problems. Other than I can’t get new updates. Came from the store with Vista so I don’t even have an actual disk of Vista so no one else could have loaded it. Home computer, no company firewall.
LOL! I was thinking, as I usually do...every time II boot this laptop up, that my AMD based XP Pro desktop,of roughly equal clock ratings, boots in about a quarter of the time that my new fangled Dual Core Vista system does...Of course, I have a real good Mobo in that box....but it’s a bit difficult to lug around, and I can’t run it off of battery packs, as I am doing right now with my Vista Laptop...due to some thunderstorms that just came through. I love my Xantrex Power packs! :o)
You still got warranty coverage? They should have at least given you a book with your Vista Product Key number on it, when you bought the system. My suggestion is, if you don’t have warranty protection, and your not a hard core techie, spend the $30 to $50, and take it to a tech shop or have a Geek Squad guy come fix it at your house. and have them deal with the headaches, and do all the updates as well. You’d be surprised at how fast they can hook up their diagnostics and fix what’s ailing your PC. in one fell swoop.
Read this, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934538/en-us see if that helps you with your problem. I would recommend trying to reproduce one of the other symptoms before doing the repair.
...I was thinkin about the iMac Pro.
Error Details Code 80073712
Have searched and searched but have been unable to really find any solution. Also seems to be a lot of complaints out there that there isn't a solution.
I know jack squat about computers.
Like today. Definition updates for Windows Defender was successful. All others failed.
Infact, when I check my update history, the only one that is successful is the defender updates. All others fail.

I found a solution to the Vista Windows update error and have tried posting it to the thread. But twice it did not appear ans since all I got was a blank page when I submitted the post, I figured something was wrong.
I am sure your readers would like to have this because it totally worked for me and was easy. Trust me, I have tried everything else short of re-installing Vista.
So here is the solution that worked:
1. Open the start menu.
2. Type cmd into the search and right click on cmd.exe and choose Run as Administrator
3. Type in takeown /f C:\Windows\winsxs\pending.xml
4. Type in cacls C:\Windows\winsxs\pending.xml /G < USERNAME >:F Note: Your user name will display when you execute step three. (Dont enter the < “ or “>)
5. Type in del C:\Windows\winsxs\pending.xml
6. Reboot
7. Downloaded & install the Windows update Agent.

For me it is the Sigma Tel Audio driver and another one I don't recall. Maybe you have similar issues.
SP1 was available, but not being distributed via Windows Update when I installed it. I checked th KB and found out that the current Intel Graphics driver I had installed was causing a problem with the update. So I rolled it back, forced the SP1 update, and everything worked fine. About a week later Intel came out with a patch, and I updated that driver as well. Vista is really no different than any other new OS, it's a learning curve for both the users and distributer.
the error code sometimes is harder to search than the text, what was the text of the error?
Vista seems to work OK for me now with the exception of a few conflicts in some programs I had but can live with out. I am not up on what SP1 is supposed to do or fix but for now if it ain't broke....
Thanks I will check that out .
My idea of a service pack for the Vista “operating system” would be to boot up to a ‘live CD’ and ‘FORMAT c:’
Vista is a curse to anyone who has a computer it’s installed on....
Which windows update do I need to uninstall and reinstall? And how do I get the patch for the intel graphics thingy?
After that read the article on installing Vista SP 1 found here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936330/en-us
I also had found an article on reasons why VISTA SP1 might not install through Windows Update which is where I found my original information before my installation. It is here, and lists known conflicts at the time of SP1’s release. I strongly suspect you might find your answers here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948343/en-us I can try to help, but I need specific information on your system to do this.
You should receive a specific error if it is the activation key.
