Two teenage boys who fell asleep while stargazing in the middle of a street in Danville were run over early this morning by a woman delivering newspapers from her car. The 15-year-olds were trapped for a time under the driver's Nissan Sentra before being extricated by rescuers from the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District, said Sgt. Phillip Wisotsky of the Danville Police Department. One teen suffered a punctured lung and a broken bone, while the other youth's injuries consisted mostly of "road rash," Wisotsky said. They were taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where police questioned them today. "They said they had gone out into the street to look at the stars," Wisotsky said. "They laid blankets down ... fell asleep and got run over." The incident occurred at 3:24 a.m. on Ashland Court. The driver, who delivers The Chronicle and other newspapers on the cul de sac, drove over the teens as she was leaving, apparently not seeing them. Wisotsky said an investigation is under way "as to who is at fault. It is illegal to lay in the street. It is a public roadway and people aren't supposed to sleep on it." According to Chris Blaser, vice president of circulation at The Chronicle, the driver was a subcontractor delivering papers for a Danville distributor. "She is very shaken up," he said.

Think they were stoned? Glad the little dumbaxes are alright.
Sterilize them for the common good!
Well, Northern California is the home of the Humboldt...
LIE - it's illegal to LIE in the street.... [head exploding.] You LAY things down. Notwithstanding the fubar on the verbiage - what in the world would motivate kids to lie in a street?... and fall asleep???... drugs...
I lie on the street all the time, though mostly when I play 3 Card Monty.

...or possibly the absence of anywhere else flat to lay down and watch the stars. I’ve only seen this a couple times, in the inner city. It’s sad, really: watching stars is such a simple pleasure.
I dunno what that neighborhood is like — probably not inner-city ay.
I find it ironical that this story is reported by the Chronicles while the driver was delivering the Chronicles.
I hate speling erros and careless punctuation
Danville is in the suburbs. It’s kind of shielded from the bright lights of SF and Oakland by hills.
Obviously it’s the Chronicle’s fault.
When I was a boy in the country, we used to lay down in the road at night and watch stars, etc. The road was still warm, maybe one car a night passed..... One night my cousin fell asleep and the rest of us ran to the bushes and yelled “a car is coming, run! You’re gonna git run over! All the while we were throwing ‘May Pops’ at him...

Somebody should tell that to the illegals. Oh wait, they are already illegal, so why would they give a damn?
LOL
> I have been known to “lie” in the street. Every time a cop stops me.
(big grin!)
Most places, it would also be illegal to lay in the street. Given the (lack of) morality in California, however, I could see where it wouldn't be a problem there.
You would think the boys could have found time to check them out, pick up a few pointers, such as the importance of staying on the sidewalk, wearing red warning lights for any early AM joggers or bicyclists...
Regardless of the fact that Bay area bicyclists aren't exactly the nicest people, swarming people that get in their way, but still...
(big grin!)
> All the while we were throwing ‘May Pops’ at him...
Is a “May Pop” something like a firecracker? (I’m from NZ, we don’t have ‘em here...)
It’s a hollow fruit from a sort of wild roadside vine that used to grow here in Georgia. I haven’t seen any in years. They were green and like a pale lime sort of and hollow and when you threw them and they hit something ‘they may pop, and they may not’.....anyway that’s what we called them; we were just dumb old Georgia rednecks with nothing to do...
Me too, I thought it was lye ;^)
Have you ever rolled Osage oranges at cars?
“It is illegal to lay in the street.”
It’s probably also illegal to lay in the street.
Why don’t we do it in the road
Why don’t we do it in the road
Why don’t we do it in the road
No one will be watching us
Why don’t we do it in the road
Georgia is a great state, had a great (tho’ much too short) visit there back in mid-late 1980’s.
Danville is very, very posh.
I dunno what that neighborhood is like probably not inner-city ay.
If it happened in a cul de sac, no, probably not inner-city ay. Eh?
And what in the world was the driver thinking, running over TWO people slow enough to stop on top of them?
“Think they were stoned?”
They were waiting for one of the little dots in the sky to turn into the Starship Enterprise like on tv.
It's pretty "high end" as well. The original home of the $2million McMansion.
No, but I bet it was fun....one night we made the mistake of yelling at one of the local badboys driving by with his girlfriend after throwing some maypops at his car. He slammed on the brake and cussed at us as he got out with his pistol... we had we immediately dropped down below the tall grass line and silently (with a few ‘Ohshits’ here and there) until his girlfriend came. Never did directly throw anything at a car after that.
Danville is a nice upper middle class neighborhood.
Wonder no more...
Wasn't there a movie a half-dozen years ago or so that had such a scene?
The "kids" would lie down on the double lines at night, and get off on the cars and trucks passing by on either side.
I didn't see it, but read about would-be thrill-seeking emulators being killed or injured in the real world.
they are supposed to keep spiders away if you keep a stash in your garage or basement
Whoa. Hope their crotches were rendered useless.
LOL lie/lay is just one of those things that bothers me... like “nukular” instead of nuclear and “realitor” instead of realtor.
I am damned to the hell that is made for language students he he he
It’s Bush’s fault...

The parents are thinking of sueing the RAILROAD.
The fact they were asleep in the street at their ages tells me drugs or alcohol had to be part of the equation. I would hate to think kids that age would be that incredibly stupid without being seriously impaired.
She was delivering newspapers. If she was not delivering newspapers this wouldn’t have happened.
Ban newspapers!
For the Childurn!
Hey! Leave Osage alone!
I hope he was on his game and you didn't have to wait very long.
;-)
Why did they do it in the road/
They got no sense, they shoulda knowed
Why did they do it in the road
Right where the dump truck dumped its load
The driver didn't see them there
Why did they do it in the road
I dunno what that neighborhood is like probably not inner-city ay.Median income there is something like $135,000. If anything, it they laid down in the street because of all the trees there...
Stupid should be painful.
