Minneapolis police officers and Hennepin County sheriff's deputies have stepped in to help law enforcement in flood-ravaged Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

By noon Sunday, Minneapolis Deputy Chief of Patrol Rob Allen along with 1 lieutenant, two sergeants and six officers were helping local police prevent theft and other crimes in areas of the Cedar Rapids where flood waters were beginning to recede and residents were being allowed to return to their homes on a limited basis, said Jesse Garcia, a Minneapolis Police Department spokesman.

Minneapolis police personnel were joined by 10 deputies and supervisors from the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office.

In addition to the man power, Hennepin County sent a mobile communications center equipped with a command post, radio tower, 118 portable radios to Cedar Rapids, said Tracey Martin, a sheriff's office spokeswoman.

More help is on the way as Minneapolis plans to send an additional 20 officers to help out, Garcia said.

Hennepin County is sending an additional 10 deputies this week, Martin said.

St. Paul police said they are sending 24 officers today.

Hope these 24 have a better time of things than the ones St. Paul PD sent to New Orleans after Katrina.

Kind of depends on how they're helping. If they're going around confiscating people's guns and forcing people who want to defend their property off their property like they did in New Orleans, then maybe it's not a good idea.

“...and residents were being allowed to return to their homes on a limited basis.”

"...allowed..."

Allowed?

This is why I am so reluctant to leave for hurricane evacuations. When the storm passes you have to wait for the government nannystate do-gooders to give you permission to return to your own home. Meanwhile, as you wait to be "allowed", your property is highly vulnerable to looting from those who remained during the storm.

Just allow the grownups to make their own decisions int he matter and go back home if they wish. FCOL it is their home after all!
