"I'll get a world record for this."
"It's fireproof."
"He's probably just hibernating."
"What does this button do?"
"I'm making a citizen's arrest."
"So, you're a cannibal..."
"It's probably just a rash."
"Are you sure the power is off?"
"Yeah, I made the deciding vote on the jury, so what of it?"
"The odds of that happening have to be a million to one!"
"Pull the pin and count to what?"
"Which wire was I supposed to cut?"
"I wonder where the mother bear is?"
"I've seen this done on TV."
"These are the good kind of mushrooms."
"I'll hold it and you light the fuse."
"Let it down slowly."
"Rat poison only kills rats."
"Just take whatever you want, this is a ghost town."
"It's strong enough for both of us."
"This doesn't taste right."
"I can make this light before it changes."
"Nice doggie."
"I can do that with my eyes closed."
"I've done this before."
"Well, we've made it this far."
"That's odd."
"You wouldn't hit a guy with glasses on, would you?"
"Don't be so superstitious."
"Now watch this..."
"What duck?"
And finally...."here, hold my beer."
When it comes to safety and security, everyone always thinks it will happen to someone else. A burglary, identity theft, an accident or an incident. Some people have narrow escapes and vow to guard against future risks. Others wait until it's too late.
The following questions test whether or not you are a proactive person or a reactive person.
Do you buckle your seat belt every time you get in the car? (Voluntarily, or is it the law?)
Do you have current insurance - and know where the proofs are?
Do you lock your doors when you leave your house? Your car?
Did/do you wear protective gear when riding a bike or other physical activities?
Do you have safety measures against burglary or theft?
Do you carry some form of personal protection (mace/weapon/whistle), or have any sort of self-defense training for fighting someone off?
Do you have a fire extinguisher in your house? CO2 monitor? Smoke detector?
Do you have an emergency plan for: A fire? An earthquake (if applicable)? A hurricane? A severe thunderstorm or tornado? The power going out? Extreme heat? Extreme cold?
Do you know your neighbors, and do they know you?
How much do you check your car before taking a trip?
Do you have flashlights, flares, or other safety implements in your car? Is your spare tire inflated?
There are various reasons this topic comes to mind. Some disasters can't be expected, but then, that's the idea behind expecting the unexpected. I carry a Smith & Wesson .357 magnum as often as possible, and post the armed citizen stories of others who do so successfully. For the times I don't have my firearm with me, I am currently taking Krav Maga classes (which I highly recommend, for training as well as fitness!).
Overall, I tend to be someone who takes precautions. I'm very much a Worst Case Scenario survival kind of guy. (Click here to read some of one of the books on Google Books) The way I see it, if you take precautions, then you may not be the person saying "I never thought it would happen to me." You'll be the person who is standing over the robber hunched up on the ground, or the one who knew how to land the damaged helicopter when the pilot fell out.

However, applicable long-distance and operator service charges will apply on operator-assisted calls.
Okay, I've read it. Now what?
Oops, I forgot the instructions for the “special” students. Give us the sentence.
Bill
Do you buckle your seat belt every time you get in the car? (Voluntarily, or is it the law?)
It depends on how far I'm going. It is the law, however.
Do you have current insurance - and know where the proofs are?
Car only, required by law.
Do you lock your doors when you leave your house? Your car?
Yes, and yes. One thing that I'm paranoid about.
Did/do you wear protective gear when riding a bike or other physical activities?
Nope.
Do you have safety measures against burglary or theft?
Nope.
Do you carry some form of personal protection (mace/weapon/whistle), or have any sort of self-defense training for fighting someone off?
Used to take Akido, probably could still pull something off but I'm not sure.
Do you have a fire extinguisher in your house? CO2 monitor? Smoke detector?
CO detector and smoke alarms.
Do you have an emergency plan for: A fire? An earthquake (if applicable)? A hurricane? A severe thunderstorm or tornado? The power going out? Extreme heat? Extreme cold?
Not particularly.
Do you know your neighbors, and do they know you?
The immediate ones North and South of us, but nobody across the street.
How much do you check your car before taking a trip?
I'm constantly aware of any issues with my vehicle.
Do you have flashlights, flares, or other safety implements in your car? Is your spare tire inflated?
I carry an emergency kit in the winter including various required things, see the question above for the second part of it.
Bonus:
1. What's the last dream you can remember having?
Don't remember my last dream. Haven't slept much in the last little while.
2. Go to the second-closest book, flip to page 10 and read the fifth full sentence on the page.
From Space Propulsion Analysis and Design:
"For launch systems or boosters, the ambient pressure can vary over the ascent (moving from sea-level pressure to a vacuum)."
3. Do you like to, or have you ever, danced? What kind? With someone, or solo?
When I'm forced to. And only with a partner. I can't dance alone, I suffer from "white man's disease" i.e. lack of rhythm.
4. What brand of toothpaste do you use? Do you floss?
Crest, and when I remember.
Bonus Questions:
Ok, so this is the singles thread? I’ve read references to it, but never found it until tonight. Greetings!
Safety and Security, Ok so in my past life I was the Health & Safety Manager does that give you a clue to the whole idea of living safely in my little world? This morning the guy who cuts my grass got his hand caught in between equipment and broke it. I was ready to give him appropriate first aid. (sheesh!)
1. What’s the last dream you can remember having?
Hmmm...can’t tell you that one.
2. Go to the second-closest book, flip to page 10 and read the fifth full sentence on the page.
Flammable and Combustible Liguids Code Handbook
The provisions of this code shall be permitted to be altered at the descretion of the authority having juridiction after consideration of special situations, such as topographical condition of the site; presence or absence of protective features (barricades, walls, etc.); adequacy of building exits; the nature of occupancy; ...
3. Do you like to, or have you ever, danced? What kind? With someone, or solo?
I love to dance. Polka, waltz, free style, jitterbug
4. What brand of toothpaste do you use? Do you floss?
Crest and yes.
LOL! Liquids...never heard of liguids...
Welcome, EBH. Let me know if you want to be included in the singles ping list, we have a thread every weekend, weather permitting. :-)
You’re the second person to have a very dull book. Perhaps I should amend the quote to be from something interesting. Fiction at least.
One could argue that the cryptosporidiosis may not have been diagnosed even if an acid-fast stain had been performed.
It's the law and no I don't.
Do you have current insurance - and know where the proofs are?
Yup
Do you lock your doors when you leave your house? Your car?
Yes and yes.
Did/do you wear protective gear when riding a bike or other physical activities?
never
Do you have safety measures against burglary or theft?
My Makarov and my dog.
Do you carry some form of personal protection (mace/weapon/whistle), or have any sort of self-defense training for fighting someone off?
no
Do you have a fire extinguisher in your house? CO2 monitor? Smoke detector?
Smoke detector
Do you have an emergency plan for: A fire? An earthquake (if applicable)? A hurricane? A severe thunderstorm or tornado? The power going out? Extreme heat? Extreme cold?
Get out of Dodge.
Do you know your neighbors, and do they know you?
I know 2 to of them to speak with very casually.
How much do you check your car before taking a trip?
I check the tire pressure mostly.
Do you have flashlights, flares, or other safety implements in your car? Is your spare tire inflated?
No, because my car has been broken into twice here in WA. They go back in the car when I move back to FL next year. Just have the "donut" in the trunk.
Bonus Questions:
1. What's the last dream you can remember having?
Barely remember my dreams, but the last one I remember woke me up because it was about my daughter dying.
2. Go to the second-closest book, flip to page 10 and read the fifth full sentence on the page.
Roads and other infrastructure were soley state issues until the 1950's.
3. Do you like to, or have you ever, danced? What kind? With someone, or solo?
I like to dance for my own enjoyment - freestyle!
4. What brand of toothpaste do you use? Do you floss?
Tom's of Maine - apricot. Sometimes.
Extremely well-prepared - my whole life is an emergency.
I find it interesting that most of the quotes so far seem to be from dull books. Is is because you asked us to go to the second closest book and that is not a favorite book or are books related to work only second closest? In my place my computer is in the den, books I am done with a filed away on bookshelves, books I am currently reading are in the family room.
Although, you may find what I am reading now equally dull. "It was around that time Stalin stumbled on a brilliant tactic of simply labeling all inconvenient ideas and movements as fascist."
1 - I don’t remember my dreams.
2 - Page 10 is blank.
3 - I love ballroom dancing (with someone, obviously) and hope to do it competitively soon.
4 - I don’t know what brand of toothpaste I use, and I do floss.
My second-closest book was Good Omens, by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett... that’s not a dull book!
Yes I buckle up every time and yes it is the law.
Do you have current insurance - and know where the proofs are?
Yes
Do you lock your doors when you leave your house? Your car?
Yes and yes
Did/do you wear protective gear when riding a bike or other physical activities?
Depends on the activity. I always wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle for instance...not always when I ride a bicycle though. I haven't rollerbladed in a while either but I did have the kneepads and wrist guards and such because I'm older and didn't want to break a bone!
Do you have safety measures against burglary or theft?
I have a security system...and two dogs!
Do you carry some form of personal protection (mace/weapon/whistle), or have any sort of self-defense training for fighting someone off?
No...I used to have some club thingy that my husband gave me that hung on my keychain...not sure where that is now. I like the idea of a whistle-I should get one of those.
Do you have a fire extinguisher in your house? CO2 monitor? Smoke detector?
No, yes and yes
Do you have an emergency plan for: A fire? An earthquake (if applicable)? A hurricane? A severe thunderstorm or tornado? The power going out? Extreme heat? Extreme cold?
Not really...for a fire, it's just get out any way you can and keep low to the ground. We don't have hurricanes and our earthquakes thus far haven't been the kind where you have to take any action. Tornado is to get in the closet on the ground floor as it's the only place with no windows in the house. I do have things for a power outage since we had one for days during an ice storm last year. I have candles, flashlights and batteries and a battery operated radio stored away for example.
Do you know your neighbors, and do they know you?
Yes although we rarely talk.
How much do you check your car before taking a trip?
I generally will get the oil changed before a trip and if the vehicle is about due for a tune up then I get that done as well.
Do you have flashlights, flares, or other safety implements in your car? Is your spare tire inflated?
No, yes
1. What's the last dream you can remember having?
That's the problem...I rarely ever can remember my dreams-about 15 seconds after waking up, it's gone from my memory. My youngest daughter however has these very involved weird dreams almost every night. I can't understand how she remembers them all in such detail when I can't even remember a small piece of mine.
2. Go to the second-closest book, flip to page 10 and read the fifth full sentence on the page.
"Can you identify and define the four word parts?" (It's from a medical terminology text I use for one of my classes).
3. Do you like to, or have you ever, danced? What kind? With someone, or solo?
I used to like to dance solo or with someone but haven't in so long I'd feel a bit awkward now.
4. What brand of toothpaste do you use? Do you floss?
I use Crest Pro-Health and yes I do floss every day.
My daughters on the other hand have very weird, detailed dreams and can tell me about practically the whole dream! lol I've always wondered what it means when a person can't remember their dreams. It's not like I can write them down as soon as I awake cause it's gone so quickly!
Hah. I have a small fire extinguisher under my kitchen sink that was here when I moved into this co-op. I’ve never touched it except to push it back farther to make room for more junk plastic containers. Twice a year they stage an inspection here to check on 1. water leaks 2. smoke detector 3. fire extinguisher. I think one time since 2001 they put new batteries in the smoke alarm. It goes off about once a year when I fry fish and I panic and quick point the box fan towards it until it stops. But the guy just glances at the fire extinguisher and has never touched it. I wonder if it is still good. I don’t know how many years it was here before I moved in in 2001. Frankly, if I had a fire I’d have to go get my glasses, pull out the fire extinguisher, wipe the dust and grime off it, carefully turn it around and around as I read the instructions and then I doubt I could turn it on. In school I learned how to get under my desk in case of air strike but they never went over practicing with a fire extinguisher.
P=Pull the pin
A=Aim at the base of the fire
S=Squeeze the handle
S=Sweep the nozzle back and forth
And yeah, the fire extinguisher probably needs to be recharged.
We did training classes for the hazmat guys at a chemical plant on how to use a fire extinguisher.
How does one go about getting a fire extinguisher recharged?
Mine has been here since 2004.
TIA!

I usually remember that one the evening after the trash truck comes.
Hire a qualified fire extinguisher company to “service” your portable fire extinguishers(required annually for businesses and apartment owners). They can be found in most yellow pages or if the extinguisher has been serviced before look at the tag on the unit.
Thank you, I clean for a living and will be sure to remind my older clients to check the ones they have, as many are on oxygen. I also will tell them the PASS reminder. Most are very capable living alone, but a couple I worry about.
Mac
Do you have current insurance - and know where the proofs are? If you mean house insurance yes and yes. Do not own a car but if did would have to as it is the law.
Do you lock your doors when you leave your house? Your car? Yes
Did/do you wear protective gear when riding a bike or other physical activities? Again it would depend on whether it was the law and what it was.
Do you have safety measures against burglary or theft? Minimal
Candles for power cut and there are various rugs etc near at hand if cold, also have plenty of tinned food in the cupboard but would not expect power cut of more than couple of hours max.
Do you know your neighbors, and do they know you? Yes one side fairly well and the other bit difficult as it is a form of care in the community setup.
How much do you check your car before taking a trip? Mum always checked oil, water and the tyres.
Do you have flashlights, flares, or other safety implements in your car? Is your spare tire inflated? My parents always had a torch (flashlight) in the car and spare wheel has to be road worthy as that is a legal requirement in Britain
Hi snugs,
can you explain this more for me?
>>>>>
Yes one side fairly well and the other bit difficult as it is a form of care in the community setup.

Thanks,
Mac

Bonus Questions
Dave needs to be away for a few minutes, and he asked me to ping the list for him.
1. This could be a tough question, and I ask that everyone be careful not to insult those whose perspective is different from their own. What part does prayer, faith, or other religious practice play in your security plans and sense of security?
2. Do you feel that the world is safer than it was when you were a child?
3. This one is off the security topic but may be somewhat relevant to this time of year. I've heard that June is supposed to be a favorite month for weddings. I've never paid that much attention myself, but supposedly some people notice and care. Do you think of June as a good time for a wedding? Is there a particular time of year that you'd like to have your wedding? If you see June as a traditional month for weddings, do you feel a little worse being single during June?
Extra Bonus
Would anyone be willing to help with hosting duties anytime soon? We're running a little tired.
I am not sure if it is a charity or government scheme but we have downs sydrome youngsters (early 20s) and 2 others 20s year olds living next door that I suspect have other issues maybe learning difficulties or ex druggies.
When you talk to them they refer to themselves as clients but as I said I am not sure if it government or charity or part and part.
2) No I think the world is a more dangerous place than when I was a child
3) June has always been thought of as traditional month for weddings/brides in Britain. I think because of the weather and since photography I would suspect brides choose this because of the blossom on the trees give a great background and many churches have these trees in the church yard or hotels in their grounds where more photos are often taken. I think if ones friends are getting engaged and married then sometimes June can be difficult for some singles. Also can be reinforced if the TV, magazines and newspapers are full of June brides
We call them group homes here. I have a cousin who is psychophrenic and lives with his new wife in one in Idaho.
Thank you for the clarification.
Mac
I think I’d rather be married in the fall. I just like taking vacations in the fall, so marriage and honeymoon would give me the opportunity.
2. Definitely not. Much more unsafe.
3. Don't think much about it. Never did. I don't stand on tradition usually. I do what strikes my fancy. I don't have pity parties over being single.
4. I'd have to think about that. Don't know if I could come up with any worthwhile questions that people would feel like answering! ;~/
If Dave and I worried about falling flat on our faces, there wouldn't be any singles' thread. LOL
