People in the Silver City/Pinos Altos, New Mexico, vicinity are nervously looking over their shoulders these days, fearing they may be the next meal for a mountain lion prowling the area...
On Friday, the body of Robert Nowojski, 55, was found about 75 yards from his Pinos Altos home, severely mauled and partly fed upon.
The animal would not leave until Game and Fish officers shot at it.
Although not yet confirmed with an autopsy, authorities suspect the lion is responsible for the fatal attack. Hunters with hounds are now tracking the animal.
Several people reported sightings of the mountain lion to the Game and Fish department in the past several weeks.
The big cat has been in other neighbors' backyards and even looked into their windows.
The animal has not shown a fear of humans

Chupacabra strikes again..
Not the first person to go missing in the area ?
Or it may have left him alone?
My house cats don't have any fear of humans why should something that can kill you in one leap have any?
Glad you found a source to post this story. The local papers that originally printed this can’t be posted here and were very hesitant to say this gentleman was killed by a mountain lion.
Puma believed to have eaten man

It’s been a while since a cougar killed anyone. They are still hunted and very wary. In the last decade I’ve only seen one.
Of course, there was one that was eyeing the playground at a local day care. It was treed and dispatched before it gathered up any snacks.
The USFWS often says the same about wolves killing livestock.
Unless an official is present before, during, and after the attack...often the government refuses to make a determination. The defenders of the predators are pleased as the rancher gets no money for his losses.
The liberals can say that they offered restitution knowing that the money is not forthcoming.
Even thought the local papers printed it it seemed like someone was trying to keep this out of the mainstream news.
The enemedia is working overtime to bury the truth.
Their fellow travelers are not interested in accuracy.
WTH ?? A guy has been eaten, practically in his own backyard...the animal who did it is right there,, and they're trying to "shoo" it off ? SHOT AT IT !!??? It would seem to me we would want to shoot it dead right where it was, lest some other unfortunate become it's next meal.......
“But We now know that if we are going to have [mountain lions] around, maybe they’re going to eat us every now and then. I’m comfortable with that.”
Dr. Paul Beier
I wonder if the latest cat snack would agree with the obviously sociopathic comment of Beier.
George, to receive restitution in these case requires signing a nondisclosure agreement. Anyone who took the cash can't talk about it, not even to dispute the envirowackies that claim no restitution has ever been paid.
I don't know where the he** you live but pumas kill people in CA regularly. It hasn't "been a while since a cougar killed someone" it has only been a few months. Try a web search, it is your friend. In CA we can't hunt them, they stalk and kill humans at a constant rate of about 2 or 3 per year, not a lot, unless you happen to be one of the 2 or 3.
They aren't hunted in Calif. But should be...
We can now shoot them here in Okla.....IF they are attacking livestock or threatening humans.
They are here....but in what numbers...know one really knows for sure.
No doubt, when he says “us”, he means someone other than him.
I hope that individual(s) got his/her photo. /s
New Mexico. I already knew this but you could have checked Slim's profile page.
Note, unlike Cali. they hunt them in NM. Maybe that is the difference.
It think it’s because we’re easier to peel than, say, a feral hog or deer.
A lot of otherwise intelligent people seem to assume that humans are uncontestably and permanently at the top of the food chain, generally from the fact that their usual encounter with the other contenders is wrapped in plastic in the supermarket. Nothing so disabuses the innocent of that notion as getting stalked. A whole lot of atavistic memory comes flooding back when you're walking in the nice friendly woods and you hear the brush rustling nearby...and whatever it is, is keeping up with you.
Yep, I will give you that. When we could hunt them here(CA) it was extrememly rare for one to kill a human. It is common now but the MSM doesn’t report attacks now because they are afraid we will open hunting again. You have to read local papers to find out about attacks of cougars on humans.
I think it is because we don't need to be peeled at all! My brother had to kill two of them (I will not tell you his name or when but it was at least 15 years ago) when they attacked him, luckily he was carrying a Browning 30-06 auto and was able to take them both down but not without a few marks of his own. Before they stopped hunting in CA we had no fear of them, now we watch like a hawk when we are in the woods. We meaning anyone with a drop of sense that goes out in the woods.
Just one more reason I pack 24/7...
I hear ya! I had one, hunted and hunted that sum^%&$#; my neighbor killed it for me while I was out of town. Saved the head for me, sweet man he was.
I live in Tijeras, just a little former pueblo off RT. 66 in NM east of Albuquerque.
Of course I’m aware of the problems with cougars and coyotes in CA. (Hey, I wish they’d eat some CA transplants that moved here!) Where they’re “protected” they lose all fear of man. Here, even the coyotes move quick when they see somebody.
Californians getting eaten doesn’t count.
Now Texicans.... there’s somethings even a hungry cat won’t do. He might cover ya up, but eat ya?
I used to seldom see a cougar in CA while I was in the woods, now I see them all the time but enviros insist that they are dying out. BS, I would like to stake some greenies out in the woods and smear them with steak fat and see what happens to them!
If you see them, they’re way too bold. You be careful, OK?
Feral dogs are such a problem in some eastern states they have passed laws the allow killing of any dog not on a leash in the woods in some states. Not enough of them to my way of thinking. Feral dogs will attack with no fear what so ever.
Don’t worry Mr. Slim. I have put my share down when I had to, but will not speak of dates or times or places. If they look at me like I am a meal that’s it brother!
I didn’t think you were the type to sing “Born Free” at them. ;)
This was in an area of about 300 people living in a housing area, this lion had no fear what so ever and thought the dogs, and maybe humans when the dogs ran out, were a great food source.
LOL!
: )
That doesn't work?
Drat! Back to the old drawing board.
At last report, there were no cougar reported prowling the halls of Northern Arizona U.
I found the news media reaction to this cougar killing of a human to be very curious. The Santa Fe New Mexican said their story was from an AP feed. The other story seems to be from a writer on a site which is part of something associated with the New York Times, called Common Cause.
One question is whether the man was attacked, mauled and dragged to where his body was found or whether he had died and the cat than fed on his body.
The autopsy will determine that.
Wolves, on the other hand, are another story, he said. The ( CANADIAN ) wolves were forced into Yellowstone by an act of Congress, not by Mother Nature...
Now that they have discovered the lush Dunoir Valley, the wolves have repeatedly chased cattle and killed at least eight dogs and a 2-week-old paint colt on the Diamond G.
The financial loss is somewhat compensated by the group Defenders of Wildlife, which reimburses ranchers full market value for confirmed wolf kills. Officials, however, sometimes cannot confidently determine the cause of death, so some losses are not compensated.
The killings take their emotional toll, too.
“We don’t want to lose our dogs to them,” Robinett said. “We don’t want to lose our horses to them.”
Further, the threat of wolf attacks means the Robinetts must devote many hours monitoring their herds. They hire extra hands in the summer, patrol the pastures at night, and keep vigilant watch for the wolves...
Environmentalists from around the West were outraged. Some even called the Robinetts with death threats.

One of these was shot in residential Chicago 2 months ago and there was a huge uproar because the animal wasn’t tranqualized.
Ok, Osage(the best long bows ever), I realize I should have said Browning BAR, semi-auto 30-06, it was the best rifle I have ever owned. It shot .75 inch groups at 100 yards with 180 grain Hornadys, and a few grains of 4895(can’t remember the exact load) when I first bought it. Later the groups opened up a bit but some SOB took it from me when I was gone. Hunt with a Ruger M77, 300 win Mag now. (and various other rifles of lesser caliber including black powder).
Stray dogs killed a woman jogger in a Chicago suburb about 5 years ago. She was in a forest perserve early one morning.

Very good article you linked at post #41, the reply feature doesn’t work there.
What is brought out in that article is why wolves were annihilated in much of our country in the first place though the enviros will never understand that.
They want humans that live in those areas out so animals have free reign.
Perhaps you could sit down with the cat, without preconditions, and negotiate a deal with him.
I'm not a big game hunter. Don't own any hi-power rifles, 'cept two target .223's. Don't get to spend a lot of time in the woods. But I know better than to try and pet something that's a link or two higher than me on the food chain.
Are you saying you don’t think that wolves should be in Yellowstone?
I should think giant, beautiful Yellowstone should be allowed to have all its original species.
I read that something like there has never been a confirmed human killing by a wolf in North America.
Pay the ranchers what’s proper, but make Yellowstone as gloriously natural as we can.
