New Microsoft Office subscription bundle to hit in mid-July

Microsoft has given its new Office-based software-plus-service bundle a new name — “Equipt” — and a due date (mid-July), company officials said on July 2.

Equipt is the product/service that was formerly codenamed “Albany” (and inside Microsoft, known as “ValueBox”). Equipt, which Microsoft describes as its “essential set of software and services for consumers,” includes a version of Office Home and Student 2007; Windows Live OneCare, Microsoft’s PC management/security bundle; a few Windows Live communication/collaboration services; and Office Live Workspace, Microsoft’s online-collaboration add-on to Office.

Equipt will cost $69.99 annually (for a license that can be installed on three PCs in a user’s home). If and when Microsoft introduces any updates to any of the Equipt components during the year, subscribers will be entitled to receive them automatically for free as part of their paid subscription.

Microsoft Vaporware would be a more appropriate name.

Microsoft's response to people still hanging on to their copies of Office 2000 which didn't require verification on installation from MS and still works perfectly well.

And only someone with terminal government school brain
damage would see any of this as beneficial.

$70/yr is not “free”.

Existing buyers of Office get free updates until the
next major rev is released. Is that about to change?

Thanks, MSFT, for making OpenOffice more attractive
than ever.

Have you seen the nearly opaque user interface on the new versions of Orifice?

Gah!

I have some machines running Linux, and Open Office I use for writing and work, email and browsing the Internet.

I use my XP Pro machine exclusively for gaming. Nothing else.

I can write just fine with Open Office, and do all the same things you can do with MS Office. I don’t use anything MS if I don’t have to.

Since my games do not run well under Linux (if at all) I keep machines for that.

Otherwise, real work is accomplished with linux and other open source applications that aren’t paid for, and no one is forcing me to license them.

You’d be wrong like normal. This is like those silly open source support contracts, where you have to pay every single year and in the end are paying twice or three times as much. Rentacenter for the net, count me out.

Well, "bundle" isn't bad but I think "steaming heap" would be more descriptive and give a more accurate mental picture.

I am late to this party. I don’t like the price point but I do like the idea. OpenOffice no matter what anybody says is not as good as Office, by any stretch of the imagination. However when it costs just $149 to upgrade Office in the first place with a 3-4 year release schedule 70 dollars a year doesnt cut it all. IF MS offered it at 49 a year it would be a much better idea.
THe rest of the anti-MS buffoons may continue with there diatribe.
