NEW YORK -- A Dutchess County special education teacher has been accused of having sex with a 15-year-old disabled student.
Teacher Mandi Weeks, 27, was arrested on Monday in Queens. She admitted to having sex with her student at the Devereux Foundation NY Center for the past month, according to police.
Weeks is being charged with two counts of rape with a child under the age of 21 and two acts of acting in a manner to injure a child under the age of 17.
The student was in the school’s residential program and lived on campus. He had been home on break for the last two weeks. Weeks lives in upstate New York and the reason for her commute to Queens Monday is still being questioned; sources said she may have been visiting her brother in Brooklyn.
The alleged sexual assault was discovered Monday when the student went missing and returned home on his own. His mother called John O’Keefe, Executive Director of the Devereux Foundation NY Center, and he directed her to call police. The alleged relationship between the student and teacher came to light during the investigation.
Weeks was hired to work as an educator at Devereux Foundation NY Center in Red Hook in February 2007. She came highly recommended from references, O’Keefe said.
The Devereux Foundation NY Center said it is fully cooperating with police. The school said it is examining if she had any other types of relationships with other students at the school.

She has taken teacher-student depravity to a new level. Perhaps she felt that she was performing a charitable service. Her appearance cannot sway me from a guilty vote with imprisonment and sexual predator therapy as punishment.

I know we’ve broken lots of barriers in the past 40 years, but do we really need to normalize student teacher sex? Are there that many female teachers out there who think it’s ok to have sex with a student?

I considered that thought for a moment, but I doubt it. This seems like more of an “absolute control” kinda thing. This wacko wants to be worshipped and, by having sex with a disabled student, she could likely ensure that he would worship her.
So? This generation has been aculturated to believed that sex is no big deal—it’s just another body function like eating or sleeping. What’s the big deal? /sarc

Probably not—I never met one who thought it was ok. That’s partly why it makes news. On the other hand, we have a whole generation coming up who think: If you want to do something it’s really ok, sex is no big deal, there is no difference between adults and children. We should probably be surprised that there is not more of it.

That’s what I was getting at, and you said it better than I did.
And I think part of it must be not making a distinction between who the adults are, and that these students are still legally children.
Some behavior and attitudes are taboo for a reason, in my opinion.
I agree. I used to see it a lot in my students (they would tell me, if they got angry with me, that I wasn’t their friend and I would reply “Exactly—I’m your teacher.” Always shocked them) and then there were the teachers who wanted to be cool. Interestingly, I was well liked, but I didn’t work at it. I wanted to be an authority figure, not an old teenager.

This particular case aside, can someone, anyone tell me just exactly how a healthy male between 13-18 is in any way harmed by having sex with his female teacher? I was a teen in the 1950’s and can promise you I would have considered myself among the luckiest persons on the planet to have been able to get it on with some of the teachers in our school.
So what IS the harm done to these guys? geez teenagers as we all know spend 75% of their waking ours trying to get laid and the other 25% thinking about getting laid. Where does this “damage” occur? What exactly does the older woman do that causes trauma in the youth?

It's the harm that happens to the other boys in class. When one of your buddies gets to have this, it can permanently damage one's self esteem forever...

Hormones, probably and a sense of being a man when you get it done. It is an undisputed fact that sex is the driving force in a teenagers life and has been for eons. It's all about natures prime directive to replicate the species.

Again, thought isn't much involved, other than "how can I get some." A "little romp in the hay" is exactly what most healthy teenage boys want.
That all being said, I'm not saying that the average teenage boy has good sense, common or moral. I'm just giving you my opinion, as a former teenage boy (who never went to bed with any teacher or other significantly older female).
Not really. Funny, but the driving force in my boys’ life has always been to get a college education so they could get a decent job. I was the same way in high school. I didn’t have time for boys because I was too busy mapping out my future. Thank goodness common sense prevails over hormones in my household.
It;s basically cuz they are told by their friends, movies,
TV, families that it is to be expected to be “laid” often,
and that there is no consequences of any sort. They are also
told that to NOT think this way is very bad (i.e. gay, scared,
pansy, wimp, crazy, not normal) and buy the way it’s completely natural to
have sex with anything you want to, after all it’s YOUR
world. Sadly many of them find out its the Babies world,
their sexual(opposite sex) partners world, and the
viruses, and bacterias world also. (not to mention the
cops, prosecutors, lawyers, manufacturers, hit-men, oil
companies, and “vinnie” the guy who hangs outside
your house world.

Read the article. The student has an IQ of 50. I wouldn’t exactly call him a “healthy male.”

I think nothing is with them. There are millions and millions of high school students in the US and well over a million teachers. I doubt the number of incidents are that high in proportion to those numbers but with millions of people you will have a good number of exceptions and those are what gets reported. People keep hearing about those incidents and they get a false picture about how common it it.
To begin with, the very premise of your question reflects a common but unhealthy view, i.e. that sex is no more than a satisfying activity. For a fifteen year old boy to "have sex" with a 27 year old woman is a violation of relationship boundaries on several levels, not the least of which is that healthy sex occurs in the context of a mutual attachment.
I don't doubt for a minute your childish fantasies about sex with an adult but that does not mean it is either normative or benign to have them carried out in reality. This boy especially but in fact most fifteen year olds of both sexes are not emotionally equipped to handle intimacy at this level. Like it or not.
The harm is done to the development of a healthy and adaptive relationship template which will serve the boy when he matures. It will in all likelihood interfere with his later ability to engage in useful, appropriate, and essential non-sexual relationships with female people in his environment.
The technical term is hypersexualization, meaning that from now on this boy will look at all females through the lens of sexuality rather than differentiating them according to their roles, and rather than seeing women as people he will see them only as potential sex partners. I know we have a lot of juveniles here who will wonder what's wrong with that, but wait until you grow up, you'll get it then.
Perhaps her female 'caregiver' instincts endeavored to help cure him or elevate the IQ quotient up a few tics beyond 50. 'All you need is love'.
