***The OFFICIAL Weekend Singles Thread*** July 11 - 13 Phobias and Manias

Posted on 07/11/2008 5:21:09 PM PDT by DaveLoneRanger

Welcome to the Weekend Singles Thread!

Tonight's topic is phobias and manias - the things you fear, and the things that bring out your devilish side.

For example:

Apimania - Excessive interest in bees
Monophobia - Fear of being alone

Bibliomania - Excessive interest in books
Neophobia - Fear of anything new

Caligynephobia - Fear of beautiful women
Pyromania - Excessive interest in fire

And of course, there's Luposlipaphobia, the fear of being pursued by timber wolves around a kitchen table while wearing socks on a newly-waxed floor. (Ala Gary Larson and The Far Side.)

For more, visit the Indexed List of Phobias or the Corrected List of Manias.

What are your fears or manias? Ladies, perhaps you are in keeping with the stereotypical suriphobia (fear of mice) or guys, perhaps you lean towards pyromania (like me!). Maybe you have a twinkimania (excessive interest in Twinkies) or chimniphobic (fear of chimneys).

If none of the above fit your criteria, or you can't think of any based on this thread, make your own up!

you can add the reaction to the “subprime crisis” to the list of manias, if it’s not there yet. It’s fittin’ 2 b.

2. Firefox, definitely. IE6 is a piece of crap.

3. I’m happy with either one.

4. Definitely windows, since that’s where I got most of my computer experience.

4. Windows, but I've never used a Mac

****Tonight's topic is phobias****

Lately my phobia is heights. At work I ride the train to work and one entrance to the train station is this super steep escalator. It freaks me out to go down it. I always choose an alternative entrance.

***Monophobia - Fear of being alone****

Quite frankly since I have a co-worker who just yaps and blabbers all day long 2 days on the weekend of peace and quite is just fine with me.

***Bibliomania - Excessive interest in books****

I might have that one. I have a ton of books I need to read. ***Caligynephobia - Fear of beautiful women***

Is it fear or is it just low expectations. LOL!

I never favour sweet or savoury I like both and can often eat mixture of the 2.

For example supper (British name for snack before bed) the last few nights have been 2 slices of bread and butter one spread with marmalade (sweet) and one spread with marmite (savoury).

Depends what site I am visiting whether I use IE or Firefox.

Not really into either board or card games apart from trival pursuit

Windows

I have a sort of fear of heights but it is more complicated than that. I am fine in a plane or even a balloon but walk on a bridge or set of steps where I can see through even a spiral staircase I am liable to freak out.

Have also been known to freeze crossing the road and only like to cross when cars are stationary either side of traffic lights.

Used to have a fear of wasps and bees until I was stung after being stung the fear has gone somewhat.

Worms and spiders do not worry me and can easy pick up either in fact I used to chase my dad with worms as a child as he has an irrational fear of worms and snakes.

What’s on the reading list?

I just finished “Journey to the Center of the Earth” by Jules Verne (NOT coinciding with the lame-looking movie that’s coming out) and “The Prince and the Pauper” by Mark Twain. I’ve begun reading The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy, and I’m also reading The Tolkien Fan’s Medieval Reader, which is a compilation of ancient mythology.

I used to be terrified of bees and wasps, even after being stung. Then I got a little bigger and realized that they’re all just a pack of tiny bugs that deserve annihilation. (The bees I let live, they’ve never bothered me. The wasps and bumblebees on the other hand...)

In fact, just the other day I used a pressure washer to jet away a wasp’s nest under the gutter of the second floor. ‘Twas a thing of beauty...

Snugs, I have an English to American question for you, if you don’t mind. The other day I was watching “Notes on a Scandal” and Judy Dentch says, “As my mother used to say, ‘The boy done her like a kipper’.” What does that mean? I hope it’s not something dirty, because I will be really embarrassed. LOL

Savor meaning something spicy or salty or otherwise flavorful. Cake is sweet, beef jerky is savor. Chocolate is sweet, salted nuts would be savor.

I am reading a book called The Best Game Ever by Mark Bowden which is about the 1958 NFL Championship game between the Baltimore Colts and the New York Giants. The game is famous for being the first NFL game to go into overtime and it was the first time the NFL and television really caught the public's attention.

I just finished reading David McCullough's 1776 and so I thought I would start reading John Adams. I also started reading a book on Teddy Roosevelt called Lion In The Winter. This book in kind of a short book. Also with the election and all I thought I might read Unfit For Command. I bought this book when it came out in 2004 but I never read it.

Dave Barry is confusing the Latin word for wolf with the Greek word. The Greek word (anglicized) is lycos, as in lycanthropy. But it can also mean “spider” — but so far as I can figure, it is specifically a hairy spider reminiscent of a wolf.

The folks at Lycos.com used to have a spider on their site...then at some point they added a dog...not sure if someone pointed out the thorough meaning of lycos.

The more common word for spider is “arachne,” whence “arachnophobia.”

It looks like there are three Greek words for “spider web” — chiton, theratron, and histos. My Greek is a bit too weak to recommend any of them.

2. Firefox or Internet Explorer?

ie

3. Board games or card games?

Is alcohol consumption involved?

4. Mac or Windows?

With the errors I get on Windows Vista, next one is gonna be a Mac...I'll also be resetting my Gateway back to factory specifications to get back to XP and then spend a month getting all of the patches for it. Vista disks may be good for skeet shooting.

Since you brought it up and since I have time on my hands (at least until August 4th when school starts again) and since I hate a nurse practitioner at my psychiatrist's office and really don't want to be added to her patient load, I will have a complete summary of my manias and phobias in alphabetical order for her "enjoyment."

She quit working the poverty sector because the nuts took over and we are getting peer supported, client centered and directed, recovery based treatment. At that center she treated everyone like they were dumb as a box of rocks and all crack addicts.

Recovery works well enough for me to shop for a shrink in the private sector and found a mighty genuine and compassionate one about the same week she got hired.

On my second visit there was an "error in scheduling" and I could see the "new NP."

She treats the private sector like they are humans. I did my best to be polite, but I will be prepared to NEVER see her again and stay with someone I am comfortable with.

Phobias and stuff?

Definitely pyromania - I like to play with fire probably more than is good for me. Interestingly, I’ve never been burned playing with fire, just trying to do things in the kitchen.

And... caterpillaraphobia? I don’t like caterpillars, slugs, or any sort of worm-like insect or insect larva. Earthworms, however, I do not mind.

Bonus questions:
1 - Sweet. I love sugary things.
2 - Safari. Yes, we all have a third option now... but Firefox is faster for streaming video.
3 - Either one... usually board games.
4 - Mac all the way, especially cause the Apple Developer Kit comes with this gorgeous little graphics program called Quartz Composer.

As far as phobias go, I hate spiders...unfortunately so do my daughters so whenever one is spotted in the house, I'm the person who has to get rid of it. Also I have a phobia about calling people on the phone...I don't mind them calling me but I just really hate to call others for some reason...if I need to talk to someone, I'd rather go see them in person or email them versus making that call...

Well obviously if they lived really far away, I’d do the email thing...I guess I was mostly thinking about people in my locale. I’d rather talk to them in person than via phone. It’s weird I know since everyone and their brother seems to have a cellphone attached to their ear these days.

Do you only fear touching them or does just seeing them cause the fear? Is the fear equal when you see them in your house versus running into one in the woods?

That fears are complicated is normal. The fear associated with being able to see through the floor is also normal. At the plant, most platforms around the equipment have a grating floor. Occasionally, I've found myself stepping across and area and being able to look through the grating to the ground a long distance below. Generally, I'm okay, but if I encounter one of those spots by surprise, I'll often get a little disoriented. I once had to go down the steps from the helipad of an oil rig. The helipad is solid, but the steps are grating. Stepping from something solid onto something see-through is tough. Doing it without any kind of railing is very tough. Doing it when I could see the ocean moving a hundred or so feet below the grating was nearly impossible. I squatted so that I could keep a hand on the helipad tarmac while I made my first few steps.
