Ozzie adamant: No Barry Bonds for White Sox (Best explanation on why no one is signing Barry)
The Chicago Tribune ^ | 7/12/08 | Mark Gonzales

Posted on 07/12/2008 9:38:53 AM PDT by prolifefirst

Guillen stressed the Sox wouldn't be interested in free-agent home run king Barry Bonds if one of their sluggers was injured for an extended period.

"No," Guillen said firmly. "Barry can't play for my team. Maybe Barry changed the way [Josh] Hamilton changed. But I don't like a player like Barry Bonds on my club, with all respect to Barry, a Hall of Famer. To me he's the best in the history of baseball, no matter what.

"But he's not the type of player we're looking for in this organization. It's all about the team. It's all about teammates."

Guillen acknowledged that "I don't know Barry that well," but based his opinion on what he has read and heard about Bonds.

"I don't think right now we need him," Guillen said. "I think people should give him a shot. Why not? But right now he can't play for the White Sox. I'm not the general manager, but Kenny hears me saying this, he'll think about it.

"It's about chemistry and unity. And I hear he's not that type of guy. We don't need people like that."

If I’m an owner I don’t won’t my hometown media criticizing me all season about lowering the moral climate of my city and providing a bad example to the kids.

Ozzie publically criticized his GM/boss a month ago for not giving him enough hitters, so for him to definitively say that Barry would not be welcomed is especially telling.

Remarkably mild for Ozzie. Back in the day, he simply would have said “Barry’s a homo” and been done with it.

Yikes. Someone should tell Ozzie that he just insulted a lot of decent, honest, steroid-free baseball players.

Pete Rose - with his glaring character flaws - should be in the Hall of Fame. Bonds should never be.

Watch any of the ESPN programs & they are all but accusing the league of collusion over the fact that Barry Bonds is not in uniform somewhere. I don’t think collusion is necessary to explain the situation. Given Bonds’ long track-record the negative opinion of him is universally held amoung baseball executives.

Seems that ESPN & some baseball writers just miss the ‘circus’, even after all the criticism that they’ve leveled at him over the years.

He was being diplomatic. Remember, he’s had MLB-approved sensitivity training.

1) I recently saw a photo of the Cubs catcher punching the White Sox catcher for coming in too hard at home and was reminded of that All Star head butt that Rose gave the catcher.

Today their would have been a massive fight for sure.

Can anyone name the hitter that drove Rose home.

They do. Most baseball writers and R/TV folks hate Bonds' guts...because a.) he was an exceptionally skilled ballplayer, b.) he made gobs of money and c.) he didn't pander to them. Bonds enthusiastically returned the favor.

One thing about Bonds...his teammates knew that, despite the "circus", once he stepped on the field, he was all about winning. Now, Jeff Kent...well, he was another matter altogether.

Yet, those same writers will probably vote Kent into the Hall of Fame before they grudgingly vote for Bonds -- even though one belongs in the inner circle and the other belongs on the outside looking in.

All this bias against Bonds is just adding to the daily depreciating value of my once very valuable Barry Bonds Rookie Card!!

Actually, Barrett punched Pierzynski because he slapped the plate after sliding home (showboating). At least that’s my understanding of what happened. I don’t recall it being a hard slide at all.

Oh, and Pierzynski kinda’ walked “through” Barrett after he got up. That was probably the catalyst.

Best ever? Try Willie Mays, not only the best all-around natural ball player ever, but an outstanding human being as well, something Barry will never be

Don't know anything about the "Say Heh Kid's" personal life, what has he done to show that he is "an outstanding human being"?

It was Jim Hickman of the Cubs that drove Pete Rose home and his collision with Ray Fossee..

And no Pete Rose should NOT be in the Hall of Fame. The betting scandal destroyed the integrity of the games he was involved in.

How else do these guys qualify for awards unless there’s a circus or a scandal or a war? Without strife, they’re not imaginative enough to hold our attention.

Babe Ruth gets my vote. Best left-handed pitcher of his day, plus what he did with the stick. No one else compares.

Guillen has been insulting decent, honest baseball players for years. He has absolutely no class. Among announcers and the press, he's known as no-nonsense. To me, Ozzie Guillen is just a jerk.

One of the San Francisco hitters said the reason that his team is doing much better this year is that they are a team instead of Barry’s supporting cast, and that there isn’t such a circus atmosphere.

Any attribution to this? The Giants won 71 games in 2007; but their record as of yesterday was 39-54, which would project to 68 wins in 2008. Also, team attendance was 5th-highest in the NL for 2007, but as of yesterday the Giants are 8th-ranked in NL attendance.

YOU: Any attribution to this? The Giants won 71 games in 2007; but their record as of yesterday was 39-54, which would project to 68 wins in 2008. I heard an interview on the Mike & Mike show on ESPN radio/TV (weekday mornings) in the last couple of weeks. I'm not very familiar with Giants personnel and don't recall who the player was. For what it's worth to you, I know I remember the meaning of the quote correctly.

I think Hickman was a right fielder / first baseman and was # 10.
