UN impotence against tyranny cannot continue

Just how bad does the tyranny in Zimbabwe have to get before the world takes action?

Robert Mugabe has already installed himself as President-for-life, having stolen two elections and had more than 5,000 of those who supported the opposition party either killed or imprisoned. He also ensured that a further 200,000 were evicted from their homes.

Morgan Tsvangirai, leader of the opposition, sensibly decided there was no point in continuing to co-operate with Mugabe's grotesque parody of democracy. Mugabe then claimed victory in a sham of his own creation.

...The leaders of the democracies in Europe and America tried to persuade the United Nations Security Council to impose sanctions on Zimbabwe, as well as a travel ban on Mugabe and 13 of his top henchmen. Their attempt failed.

Russian and China, both permanent members of the security council and able to veto any proposal, torpedoed the idea of punishing Mugabe's regime.

David Miliband, Britain's Foreign Secretary, called their decision "incomprehensible". In fact, it is only too understandable, for it derives from the ruthless pursuit of self-interest that has characterised the foreign policies of these states.

China's investment in Africa has increased hugely recently, but the real reason for both these vetoes isn't economic: it is fear of the precedent that would be set if the UN explicitly authorises action against a country because it is governed by a tyrannical autocrat.

The UN has become irrelevant, except for graft, corruption, and to progpogate the philosophy of "new world order".

You mis-state. The UN is the world’s largest criminal organization of thieves, cheats, mass murderers, pimps for child prostitution and marketers of slaves. That we allow this cesspool to remain in New York is to our continuing shame.

UN impotence against tyranny cannot continue

When has the UN responded potently to anything? The only times have been the Korean War, which occured because the Soviet Union was boycotting because the "wrong" China was in the UN, and the 1990-91 response to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait, which occured because the Soviet Union had collapsed and Saddam crossed a national border without a superpower to back it up. With the US, UK, France, Russia and China having veto power, a country would have to cross all five at once to have the UN respond.

Once the UN start putting thug states in positions of power, it was the end of hope for a workable UN. I wonder if that wasn’t the plan from the beginning. Alger Hiss and company make me wonder.

It’s time to flush the UN and start a new organization that has a membership requirement. Each member must be a democratically elected government. Shame elections do not count. Dictators need not apply.

The main focus should be the spread of democracy to those that want it. The others can continue as they see fit but can not participate in the new organization.

In addition, all foreign aid needs to be contingent on the recipient’s behavior. You want money, you better play nice or you get no food, money or technology. Let Chavez, Castro(Raul) and the others support their like minded people.

All this was perfectly predictable from the first.

One man, one vote, one time is the way most of the national liberation movements of the past have gone.

And when has the UN actually had any authority, moral or real. Letting the Soviet Union in was only the first big mistake.

The only “justice” would be for the USA to remove this ass from power by force. As a result we would be condemned by the UN and criticized by all of the world's powers for doing the job. I would suspect that a few of the 3rd world countries would go to there rescue. Consider the past history of our help to others.

Why? That's not our problem. Let them stew in their own juices. They'll figure it out sooner or later.

As far as I am concerned Zimbabwe and Africa as a whole can swirl down down down the toilet. NOt one ounce of blood for that continent. NOT ONE.

UN impotence against tyranny cannot continue

How could it be otherwise. Its members are tyrants, its founding documents are an outline of tyranny.

ANG - The only “justice” would be for the USA to remove this ass from power by force.

EEE - Why? That’s not our problem. Let them stew in their own juices. They’ll figure it out sooner or later.

I gotta go with EEE on this one. I don’t see it as our problem.
