This could be just a tad over the top, automotively speaking

C&D has official photos and stats on the '09 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG "Black Series" -- a tricked out version of the already ludicrously fast SL65 AMG.

The new series claims 661 horsepower. Top speed is electronically limited to around 199 mph.

Torque output is unchanged at 738 pound-feet, although Mercedes says the engine is detuned from 885, likely to keep the heavy-duty five-speed automatic transmission alive. The Black Series’ transmission, however, adds a fourth transmission setting, M2 manual mode, which shifts a claimed 25 percent quicker than M1 mode. As before, there are also Comfort and Sport settings for the automatic modes.

...There’s also a new intercooler that AMG says reduces intake charge temperatures by 30 percent, and an upgraded cooling system to keep the engine from melting itself... AMG expects the car to cover the 0-to-62-mph sprint in 3.9 seconds, although we’ve gotten 3.8 out of an SL65...

Expected sticker price? If you have to ask...

That is getting close to Bugatti Veyron territory.

Now if they made that with a 300hp engine they might sell more of them.

With the Stig at the wheel, you might need a high-speed camera to film the lap.

If you follow the next link on the page, there is a comment that says something like:

“I can just see the panties dropping as I pull up”

Is it really that simple?

:)

MB SL63 AMG: about 200 are scheduled for US delivery, at about $320,000 per copy. A bargain compared to the $1,000,000 plus Veyron.

A much more “sensible” high performance car is coming soon: A Nissan GT-R costing close to $70,000 per copy with enough power and handling to keep any amatuer happy.

(Car press can’t say enough about the car, which recently set a lap record at Nurburgring.)

Yep and at $190K the Mercedes is bargain compared to the Bugatti which goes for right at $2 million (and a multi-year waiting list).

You would be surprised at the number of automatic transmissions available in the high BHP cars.

Also more attainable than an Ascari.

I like Vettes as well, but 0-to-62 in under 4 seconds is damned good.

The Ascari is actually fairly reasonably priced for a super-exotic, but they only make around fifty a year and if some superstar celebrity orders one they probably go to the top of the list. There aren’t that many of the top AMGs produced, but anyone who wants one can probably get one within six months.

True, it isn't as much as a Koenigsegg.

If I had a couple million to spend on a car I would get either a Bugatti or a Koenigsegg (probably the Bugatti).

Automatic transmission??? WTF??

These new F1-inspired, dual clutch gearboxes are nothing like the slushboxes of the past.

The Veyron is sublime, isn’t it? The car is a work of art. There is *something* about it that edges it over the Koenigsegg (which is a fine car and I wish that I could drive someday).

I love Bugatti’s website where you can play with the different color combinations.

Dunno. That Benzo looks pretty cool-guy. It'd probably give this guy a run for the money (mouse over image): click me

That's a nice and very fine Sunday Go-To-Meetin' ride though. One could also go for one of those Lamboughini Diablo's, Dauer EB110, or even one of those spiffy McLaren F1's for that casual over the hill and to Grandma's we go just as nicely (and in style too I may well add).

That new 'Vette ZR1 engine looks like its got something going for it. Probably would give a Callaway Sledgehammer 'Vette some competition, eh? They were talkin' 'bout the ZR1 earlier on this threadI fail to see why second-best oneself though.

When this is ALL one really needs in a "street legal" automobile plus it would be amusing for a little while. Well, o.k. for a LOT of while 8>)

But if I had druthers, which I can't afford to have, nothing beats this for some seriously getting to work on time, or making the door opening for Black Thursday in November (when seconds matter). That thud you're hearing as you pull up in that car is not the sound of hundereds of panties collectively hitting the pavement, but that many female hads impacting the ground as they fall in a collective swoon.

I don't know what it is about that car, perhaps the vanity mirror on the passenger visor, the stylish headlights, or fancy two-tone rims, perhaps its just plain sumpin', dunno. But it definitely has something goin' for it in the chick department. Maybe its that special hood decal that makes the car really fast. Dunno.
