University Of Chicago Study: Older People Happier Than Youth
All Headline News ^ | July 14, 2008 | Vittorio Hernandez

Chicago, IL (AHN) - A new University of Chicago study linked happiness with age, with older people apparently happier than the youth.

The findings are based on a study by Yang Yang, a researcher of the university's General Social Survey, in which 50,000 Americans have been interviewed since 1972 repeatedly to check trends, make comparisons and trace changes in responses over time.

Tom Smith, director of the General Social Survey, reportedly said the findings had results that were contrary to popular expectations.

Despite the health problems of older people, the study found that they have lesser financial, interpersonal and crime problems while it was the reverse for the youth who had better health, but had lots of other concerns in life.

Yang's findings support a previous study by Smith that those who worked beyond the retirement age had the highest level of job satisfaction, shattering the myth that the reason behind their extended employment was financial lack.

Smith explained that many people think of people working in their 60s and 70s as trapped in their jobs, but that most people who continue working like their jobs and continue to work because they enjoy doing so.

Of course the older people are happier. They’ve managed to “kick the can” of social security solvency down the road so that it falls directly on the backs of those who are younger. I’d be pissed too, if I were one of them!

The “youth” they probably studied were U of C students, we were a miserable lot.

Yup.

A lot of spoiled, self indulgent, and self deluded baby boomers whacked out on prozac and pot.

To deal with these BB’s, I think we should take a page out of their diversity handbook and study eskimos.

They set the old and useless out on an iceburg and kick it out to sea.

Not only have the kids moved out but we stay home, read, cook, garden and aren’t running around temptingcriminals to rob us. We don’t go to bars and get drunk and wake up with strangers. We don’t run up credit card debt, we don’t skip class, we don’t fool around and cause problems for spouses.

If everyone got married, stayed home and read books,,,they would be happy like us.

Older people are sucking the lifeblood out of our society:

Senior benefit costs rise 24% since 2000

Updated 2/14/2008 9:00 AM
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2008-02-13-seniors_N.htm

The cost of government benefits for seniors soared to a record $27,289 per senior in 2007, according to a USA TODAY analysis...

Circa 2020, when the peak of the Caucasian Baby Boom bubble begins to retire [and moves almost instanteously from being massive tax contributors to massive tax consumers], the USA as we knew it will collapse, implode, and cease to exist.

“Older people are sucking the life blood out of our society”.
I retired early and could live just fine without SS. But I paid into it all my working life so you’re damn right I’m drawing it. They’d just give it away to someone else anyway.
Now, what do you suggest we do about our old folks, issue ‘em a poisen pill so that they can quietly committ suicide?
When my parents got old and could no longer care for themselves I took them into my home and cared for them myself. No one in my family has ever been in a nursing home. One was in a Hospice situation for a few weeks but that’s it.
Whatcha gonna do when you get old?

I really hate these generational threads with the young popping off about killing the old and the old striking back.

Back to the topic, I have noticed that I am happier now that I am old. Youth is hard, very hard, all that planning and working and worrying about the kids, the bills, the house, the wiring. Worrying about school, getting ahead.

Youth is damned hard. I am happier being out of it myself. Old has the hard parts too but somehow I face them okay.

If everyone would quit talking about poison and icebergs!

When I get “old” [the Good Lord willing], the USA won’t exist anymore, because old people and minorities will long since have sucked out its lifeblood and it will have passed the point at which it was a worm-riddled carcass, and it will have become instead an archaeological curiosity - the kind of thing we will tell our children stories about: “When your father was a boy, there used to be this thing called the United States of America, back before the race wars and the age wars tore it apart and the Red States seceded from the Union...”

You better get used to them, CG, because you ain't seen nothin' yet: Circa 2020 [and maybe even earlier, if Hussein Obama wins this time around], the USA will NECESSARILY collapse from the weight of all these social programs.

It will happen, and the ensuing chaos will be apocalyptic, and there's not a darned thing that anyone can do about it now except to start preparing a survival strategy for when the chaos arrives.

I know. I’m currently supporting FIVE retired adults, drawing a combined amount of $9,000.00 plus cheap medical care out of the kitty each month...and that’s just in MY family!

I wrote a rant on this situation yesterday. I’ll re-post it if I have time to look for it. :)

But that’s ok my jolie blonde!

I just object to the baby boomer polticians and other assorted political reptilia robbing me to pay for their “golden years.”

My youth wouldn’t be so hard and busy getting ahead if I wasnt forced to pay for mine, and the generations before and after me.

The people before you are ones that yhou owe a debt to in case you haven’t thought about it.And the people who are coming up ahead are those to whom you will owe a debt. THe former cared for you, made this country, gave you life and opportunity. The latter will be your children and grandchildren who, with luck, will love you and care for you.

The ale sounds pretty good tho. You’re buying aren’t ya

I have thought about it. The generation before me has saddled my generation with a 5 trillion dollar debt, a reduced world standing, a lost war(vietnam) and 2 stalemates. My generation is the first one they took pills not to have and dumped up into daycare.

You have let druggies and child molesters run amok in the world I grew up in.

You sent us to substandard schools, where masculinity, pride, ambition, and integrity are actively discouraged, and anyone who chooses to serve in the armed forces are activly mocked.

You have allowed the gay mafia to dominate the popular culture and white men to be lampooned at any and all public events.

Want to discuss all the civil rights we have lost on the baby boomer’s watch?

Try being a non custodial dad, a gun owner, a property owner, a hunter, or a business owner.

We have a tax rate of about 60% when you figure in manufacturing costs, and yet the baby boomer politicos want more.

Shall I continue?

As for the future generation, the poor kids are really screwed up. The baby boomers flaws have become systemic and I am not sure we can fix them.

I owe the generation before me nothing but scorn and disdain.

My debt is to the future.... maybe if I cut the cancerous lump of the baby boomer out I can save enough of my country to give hope to the next in line.

Guess you don’t owe your parents or grandparents or greatgrandparents a thing???

Ingrate applies to you.

Plus your blanket accusation of everyone who came before you is childish, incorrect and tells more about your bitter outlook, your feeling “cheated” than it does about the reality of life.

“Guess you don’t owe your parents or grandparents or greatgrandparents a thing???”

We were not talking about them. But since you brought them up, my grandparents were proud folks who didn’t have children to be their slaves. The only thing we owed them was to keep our pride, hold to the family’s code, and do well for ourselves.

See cage, they made their own lives. They didn’t leech off of others or hold others hostage emotionally. They earned and demanded respect, by deeds, not age or gender.

Try it out sometime.

“Ingrate applies to you.”

Coward and intellectually bankrupt applies to you.

“Plus your blanket accusation of everyone who came before you is childish, incorrect and tells more about your bitter outlook, your feeling “cheated” than it does about the reality of life.”

Your inability to refute even a single point that I made to you is a clear reflection that you understand that I am correct, that you agree with my points, and that feel that you are entitled to the efforts of others, merely due to your age.

Tis a shame.

But not unexpected.

I know, but who let them?

Evil succeeds when good men to nothing right?

I know that alot of good folks were ignored or weren’t really politcally savvy to what the leftys were up to until it was late in the game, but there are many many that stood by and let their churches, union, and clubs tell them what to do w/o thinking about it.

Now look at us....
