This reminded a friend of the long known phenomenon of icebergs.

Icebergs generate an attractive 360 degree current around them. That is, water is pulled towards them from all sides, and when cooled by the iceberg, sinks straight down, pulling in more water.

This was mentioned in one of the Patrick O’Brian Aubrey-Maturin novels, and O’Brian was known as a stickler for facts.
