Apple today announced that iPhone and iPod touch users have already downloaded more than 10 million applications from its groundbreaking new App Store since its launch late last week. Developers have created a wide array of innovative mobile applications ranging from games to location-based social networking to medical applications to enterprise productivity tools. Users can wirelessly download applications directly onto their iPhone or iPod touch and start using them immediately. More than 800 native applications are now available on the App Store, with more than 200 offered for free and more than 90 percent priced at less than $10.
"The App Store is a grand slam, with a staggering 10 million applications downloaded in just three days," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO, in the press release. "Developers have created some extraordinary applications, and the App Store can wirelessly deliver them to every iPhone and iPod touch user instantly."
Many of these amazing new applications take advantage of iPhone's large display, Multi-Touch user interface, fast hardware-accelerated 3D graphics, built-in accelerometer and location-based technology to bring far more powerful applications to the mobile arena than ever before.
The App Store on iPhone works over cellular networks and Wi-Fi, which means it is accessible from just about anywhere, so users can purchase and download applications wirelessly and start using them instantly. Applications are free or charged to the user's iTunes(R) account and the App Store notifies the user when updates are available for their apps. The App Store is also available in iTunes running on a Mac or PC, which syncs applications to the iPhone or iPod touch using a USB cable.
another sign of the stupidity of the american people...
Guess Apple won’t need a federal bailout.
Apple is rockin’ in a bad economy.
Build a better mouse trap.........well, you know how the old saying goes.
That’s a rather bald statement. Why would you say that? Nobody has called you stupid for any choices you have made. What makes you an expert on what is stupid and what isn’t?
Is it simply because you know what is good for people and what isn’t? Sure makes you sound like a liberal to me.
“another sign of the stupidity of the american people...”
Hmm, smells of elitism. Sure you aren’t a Bambi person?
I don’t care what anyone says, Steve Jobs turned Apple around and brought it back to the core of its glory: an OS based on UNIX.
And the phone just plain rocks. I hunted around and found the right place and picked it up in an hour. And darn glad I did.
Apps will change the world. :)

If you want on or off the Mac Ping List, Freepmail me.
How DARE they have disposable income and want to spend it on something they like!
So - I don’t know what the cost to manufacture the iPhone is, but what would be a logical “per-unit” margin on a new iPhone 3G?
I know that AT&T pays $200 directly to Apple as a subsidy with consumer contracts. I doubt AT&T gets all of the other $199. So....
Think Apple makes $50 per unit? If so that would be $50 million.
Interesting....
Hey, RS, want to continue your argument that Apple WON’T sell 10 million iPhone’s in 2008?
Ah, yes: Those stupid Amercans in 27 countries. . .
Count me for many of them, the 2.0 firmware for my Touch, the remote control (way cool), a bunch of free stuff to check out, one of which I bought the full version.
Anyone who has an iPhone should get the VOIP app, free calls whenever you’re near a hot spot.
Who? Me?
(I preordered a 3G Saturday.)
Although I thought the Exchange account setup looked intuitive, I can’t get the connection to work. Has anyone tried and able to help?
freepers obviously excluded!
why can’t someone express an opinion without being called a liberal here?
You don’t have to agree with me... no one told you you HAD to accept my opinion (like a liberal would)
No one told you that you HAD to accept their opinion.
I think the crux of the matter is that you expressed an opinion with no discernible basis in fact.
YOU have no use for the iPhone (Well, neither do I) so you assume that those that buy one must be stupid.
Did it occur to you that perhaps the device does exactly what they need? How is that stupid?
I won't be buying an iPhone because my Treo 700p does exactly what I need. But I don't think that it would be perfect for all of those people that bought an iPhone.
You are, of course, entitled to your own opinion. Well actually, you are entitled to an informed opinion.
Perhaps you have an informed opinion. Unfortunately, you decided to just call a million people stupid without any continuing commentary explaining why, precisely, you think that may be so.
So you got pilloried.
The same jokers that stood in line to buy the new I-phone probably sit around and complain about gas prices all day!
“Think Apple makes $50 per unit? If so that would be $50 million.”
I bet it is much higher than that, however I’ll default to your figures. In that case, a 25% margin! That’s ridiculous! I’m gonna get on the horn to Pelosi and get some congressional hearings on the schedule for these price gougers!
most IPhone users I know are liberals
thats why there so stoopid
Maybe you need to hang out with fewer liberals.
Then when you see someone using a tool that meets their needs it won't be a liberal and you won't draw foolish conclusions.
just look at the stoopid responses here so therefore all iPhone users must be stoopid two
Look, there are a lot of people in here, perhaps in this thread or not, who think that buying an iPhone is a fine decision for them.
You came into this thread and made a concise and unequivocal statement that those people are “stupid”.
I agree that calling you a liberal (which was my intention whether true or not) is a much worse insult, but why are you so thin skinned about that? It is just my opinion...
Really. You can make your point without being deliberately insulting and nobody is going to call you on it. I did that deliberately (knowing full well the meaning and impact the perjoration of “liberal” carries on this website) and apologize for doing so.
I just think you can make your point with insulting people. Fair enough?
Says the man who can’t spell.
at this point I am just having fun....
you should see the ‘fair tax’ threads- those people go NUTS when you tweak them
I kan two spel
Nothing personal, so I hope you don’t take offense, but I don’t see the fun in that.
It may be fun for you, but it isn’t very constructive. I can guess that tossing an inert hand grenade into a wedding party in Jerusalem could cause some reactions that might be considered funny, but all it really does is give you some laughs and piss off people.
I do understand that pushing buttons to get a response on people is considered fun by some, I just think that kind of thing says more about the person pushing the buttons than it does about the people getting their buttons pushed.
Granted, I was guilty of pushing your button, but I don’t do that type of thing as unelicited sport. There is quite enough to get people all worked up about out there.
IHBT
ok I give- what is IHBT?
Oh c’mon... it’s good for a chuckle
MICROSOFT FREE!!! I get it.. you are one of ‘those’
linux bites it
It’s kind of like going to the ball game and getting a good rousing chant of “the other side sux” going
Now back under your bridge.
I bought an iPhone on Friday, and I’m very happy with my decision.
Why am I stupid?
you’re not- I specifially said FREEPERS EXCLUDED
Well, being from the Boston area and having seen the Yankees come to town, I guess I know what you mean...
(Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants don't help)
Today seems to be one of those days.
:-)
An argument is a connected series of statements intended to establish a proposition.
Argument is an intellectual process. Contradiction is just the automatic gainsaying of anything the other person says.
“Hey, RS, want to continue your argument that Apple WONT sell 10 million iPhones in 2008?”
Sure ... They sold what? 750,000 of the first one in the same time frame, and wound up selling 5 mill in a year ?
Now they cut the price in half for a product with ( finally ) some features people wanted and the big crush is only 1/3 more then last time ?
BTW, did they announce sales for the NEXT 3 days?
“Contradiction is just the automatic gainsaying of anything the other person says.”
No it’s not :-)
If you want me to go on arguing, you’ll have to pay for another five minutes.
They sold 4 million iPhones in 2008 leading up to the launch of the 3g. That's a total of 7 million first generation iPhones since the release on June 29th. The sold 770,000 iPhones in the second quarter... but stopped sales six weeks before the end of the quarter in preparation for the release of the 3G.
Now they cut the price in half for a product with ( finally ) some features people wanted and the big crush is only 1/3 more then last time ?
Apple still receives the same price for the iPhone... AT&T and the other providers are now subsidizing it.
BTW, did they announce sales for the NEXT 3 days?
Queues at Apple and Provider stores around the world were reported for a week after the launch date. Apple sold out of iPhone 3gs. The next wave is due in three weeks. Apple sold 1,000,000 iPhones in less than 3 days, it took 74 days to sell 1,000,000 first Generation iPhones.
It would be interesting to go back to last years claims, now that jobs has said they did not get to the one million mark for over two months. Subtracting the 2 days 250,000 launch, that gives sales figures of only about 10,000/day or less then 4 mill in a years time at that rate. Some sources were saying that they had 3 mill phones on hand at launch - were the ‘shortages” contrived ?
Is there any figure on how many of the 4Gig versions were built ?
“Apple still receives the same price for the iPhone...”
Oh really ? ... What price might that be, what was the price originally, and what is your source ?
Apple announced contemporarily last year when they surpassed the one-millionth iPhone sold after 74 days. Apple's financial reports include the accurate numbers for each quarter and the entire fiscal year.
As for Apple receiving the same $ for the iPhones. They were selling for $399. Now they are selling for $199 and $299 with AT&T and other providers in other countries subsidizing the difference between the retail to customer price and the wholesale from Apple cost.
Oh, also the unsubsidized, untethered iPhone is $599.00
figuring Apple’s 30% mark up, that puts the wholesale at about $420
So apple has been backed down to the same kind of deal that everyone else gets - a subsidized purchase price and no continuing usage income.
Since apples fiscal years do not match real years, how are we to know just how many phones were sold in 2008 so far ?
Apple's 2nd quarter corresponds fairly closely (but not exactly) to the 1st Fiscal quarter of companies that use a calendar fiscal year.
The reason it doesn't exactly correspond is because Apple's quarters always begin and end on a Saturday. Their fiscal year begins and ends on the last Saturday in September. My recollection is that the transition event occurs at 5 PM on the Saturdays in question.
The second fiscal quarter for Apple started on December 29, 2007 and ran to March 29th.
