I can't help but notice that the NYS Police, the Sheriff's, and the local town and city cops no longer walk the beat or do much "protecting"
They are trained now to make their primary priority issuing minor tickets that have big fines.
Offense: Cell phone use = $150 bucks They also are trained to scan your auto inspection sticker, one day out of inspection and you may pay $200.
Speed traps, you name it, Police are now a profit center first and foremost, more reason for people who want to prtect themselves to purchase the guns of their choice.
Let me guess, you recently got a ticket for speeding and using your cell phone while driving, and while giving you a ticket, the officer also noticed that your inspection sticker expired?
Hey, if you don’t have anything to hide...if you’re not breaking any law....well we’ll just find one you are breaking. Standby.
Or maybe the OP is just really observant and in tune with the new way of things to come.
My father is a retired cop with 30 years of service. He claims that pretty much all cops under the age of 35 suffer from severe Short D!ck Syndrome and they would never have been hired back in his day. It’s pretty darn sad that I grew up admiring cops and now I’m going to have to teach my future kids not to trust them.
everybody knows i'm a cop. haven't issued a traffic ticket in about 3 years, though. i prefer actual policing.
however, i will say this: whenever a cop issues a ticket, it is because he is told to do so by the brass and/or the local gov't.
i know VERY few cops who enjoy giving tickets. the only time it's fun is when the issuee is a total d-bag from the word "go." or when someone who got in an accident has hurt someone by driving like a nut.
The courthouse was packed with us violaters and every cop had a shaved head. Not saying anything, but I'll be damned if they all didn't look like a damn neo-nazi group standing up there.
If the government and law enforcement were doing their jobs, we wouldn't have upwards of 40 million illegals and their anchor babies here would we? These people are happy making super low wages with no medical benefits, and the businesses that support the career politicians love it, as long as stupid Americans pay the bill for this disaster.
There are such people in Massachusetts, who now of course reside in Florida and elsewhere more climate favorable.
Masshole cops are the worst. “Do you know how fast you were droiving ya caaaahhh awn the MassPoike?”
Cops == Tax Collectors with Guns
solution: don’t speed.
Better yet, I just stay the heck out of Massachusetts. Nothing but a bunch of dirtbag Patriots fans up there anyway. Worst state in the country.
i'll try not to speed here on the information superhighway.
i count how often i am called a boot-licking, jack-booted, nazi, revenuer and wear it as a badge of honor. it happens a lot.
sorry about the sentence structure in that last post. i was on the phone and wasn’t paying attention.
I was chatting with a state trooper and he was complaining that too many of the guys loved giving tickets. He said he didn’t like all the paper work. :)
the reason is in this climate of policing, writing more tickets gets you noticed and rewarded with prime assignments down the road.
especially with the state police. i never wanted that job because writing tickets is a huge part of the job. i like handling jobs.
guys nowadays might like writing because it's easy and they got picked on in high school, but for the most part it helps your career. unfortunately.
Btw, I have to say that if you pick ANY profession, there's good and bad in all.
Well, as far as I can tell, you seem like one of the good guys. Which is why I would bet money that you're over the age of 35.
i learned that treating people (even criminals) with respect makes the job a lot easier. unless the respect isn't returned.
one saying that describes the ticket-hungry cops to a tee:
"if you give a guy a hammer, everything starts to look like a nail."
Problem: Why does the speed limit seem to keep decreasing? Or better yet, why the speed limit increase greatly in some areas, then immediately decrease in others, then up again, then down again, up, down...etc. During any one trip, one is guaranteed to be speeding.
So, tell me again? How does one not speed?

Sorry guy but lots of conservatives question the whole premise of the road safety system.
I was just thinking on the way home how much of a miracle it was that I never got arrested in the city years ago. A typical Friday night in high school pretty much consisted of us going to the city, getting gross on 40's of malt liquor, jaywalking, buying pot in Washington Square Park, jaywalking more, and then hitting up a show at The Wetlands. Pre-Giuliani New York was an absolute blast.
Perhaps Jersey Highlander would like to tell the tale of a certain high school classmate of ours. He tells it much better than me.
We get tickets from kids that our son beat up in high school. Meanwhile, son moved to another state. lol
So you, other (older) cops, and a lot of people here all recognize that a lot of cops are attracted to the job and the assignment for the wrong reasons, but yet you defend them?
And ‘just following orders’ is not a good excuse. See Nurenberg for details.
I didn’t see thefactor defending them. Care to share the reason for the big chip on your shoulder?
I do notice that, even locally, the departments differ. Some are professional for the most part and too busy to spend time on “revenue enhancement”. Others tend to the hardnose and some, usually smaller departments, exist for the revenue to support themselves. Political leadership seems to drive that to a large degree.
Still, cops were a better breed in general when I was a kid and younger man.

Records show you're due for your annual exam too... heh heh heh.
We need laws redirecting this income away from localities. That should cut down on needless traffic enforcement and put cops back to work busting real criminals.
follow the signs. they are clearly marked. and the up and down; those are called speed traps.
giants. i see from your site that this will make me a bad guy.
Cops are the fastest and most dangerous drivers on the road. They routinely violate every traffic law (speeding, rolling through stop signs, etc) that they issue tickets for. That's from decades of being a driver and observing them.
He said that the job of the police is NOT to protect or serve. They can't really protect you, and they really don't offer any service.
The job of the police is to enforce the law. "Protect and serve" is simply a motto for PR purposes.

Well, nobody's perfect (except me). You're alright in my book. And every interaction I've ever had with the NYPD has always been pleasant and courteous for what it's worth.
Perhaps ‘defend’ was too strong a word. Let’s say excuse the behavior as ‘part of the job’ and ‘following orders’.
No chip. I call them as I see them. When the cops are over the line, I will criticize them. When they do right, I will defend them. I no longer automatically take their side.
The recent ruling in the case of the Chicago cop is a perfect example. The cop is taped while beating a 60 y/o man handcuffed to a wheelchair. The court ruled that he could not be fired. In my opinion, the 4 cops who stood by and did nothing should be fired. The ‘tough guy’ should go to jail.
“There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What’s there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced nor objectively interpreted and you create a nation of law-breakers.”

I wish there were more officers like you. On a slightly different note, have you ever watched the show “Speeders?”
“i was on the phone and wasnt paying attention.”
You should be ticketed immediately! ;-)
They are tax collectors for a large part of their day and a lot of them realize that.
i’m a single cop living in manhattan. no cable yet. maybe when i get a raise. ha...
Veritas. Same here.
Puerile street thugs with testosterone overload, a black Dodge Charger, and body armor.
Highway robbery. The Sheriff of Nottingham needs his taxes.
There is more money in shaking down non-violent procedural criminals than there is in prosecuting and keeping violent offenders behind bars.
Wonder how much of the younger recruits are using steroids and suffering from ‘roid rage.
We are told how bad it is for professional athletes to be using illegal steroids. What about law enforcement officers?
That’s another thing, the tickets have gotten higher, from $80 for a 10 mile speeding ticket to $175 for the first 5 miles over.
In Chicago and elsewhere there are $10,000 fines for hitting a highway worker. Not killing a highway worker, hitting one. And that does not exempt you from lawsuit or insurance claims. I doubt your insurance even covers the $10,000 fine as it is a driving violation.
The sky is the limit for traffic tickets now.
I believe that would fall under cruel and unusual punishment.
