Looking back now, it may have been one of Jeremy Shockey's best plays as a Giant.
He got into a shouting match with the general manager, rankled the head coach, spread chatter about his discontent during the offseason and threatened to turn the post- Super Bowl training camp into a daily soap opera. For a guy who wanted out, it was about as precise a route as he's ever run.
So when the Giants finally agreed to trade the four-time Pro Bowl tight end to the Saints yesterday - receiving a second- and a fifth-round pick in the 2009 draft in return - it came as no real surprise. In fact, for some of the key participants in the negotiations that simmered for almost five months, it was quite likely a relief.
"It has been difficult and it has been challenging and I know that personally Jeremy has been struggling with his future," Giants co-owner Steve Tisch, who had what he called a "special relationship" with Shockey, told Newsday yesterday. "He made it very clear to me and John Mara and Jerry [Reese] and coach Coughlin that he wanted to play for another team.

New Orleans deserves him!!
He’s a drama queen. Good move by the Giants.
Hope JS is happy in the moribund franchise that is the Saints. He’s gonna miss New York but he made his bed.
One comment was "Now my wife will have to get a new Giants jersey." Her and a million other Giants fans. Giants Stadium has been a sea of Shockey jerseys since he came.
We wish him the best...he was an exciting player when he was on his game. And now with Tiki, Strahan and Shockey gone, this is truly Eli's team.
Well, looks like Jeremy “Me-Me-Me” Shockey is gone.
The only other potential “Me-Me-Me” player is Burress, and he might be more easily handled without another “Me-Me-Me” player to feed off of.
He’ll add a little color to the chocolate city.
Funny that the Giants passing offense took off once their all pro tight end went down with a injury.
The Giants won a Super Bowl without Shockey in their lineup. I don’t think they will miss him.
No complaints from this Giants fan.
So long as the Giants had no intent of using him as a primary receiver his value to the Giants was not great (with the belief Boss can be an effective blocker). That being said, do not be surprised if the Saints turn around and throw to him 90 to 100 times this year and he makes the pro bowl. Yes, the G-Men should do well despite his being gone, they have what could be an explosive offense. The defense is sound as well. It should make for an interesting season.
Plaxico's SB performance bought him some good will for a while.
As for Shockey, good riddance. Troublemaker, bad hands. I've been calling for him to be traded for a couple years now.
I'd say so -- they made their entire Super Bowl run without him. The now know he's at best unnecessary, and at worst a distraction/hindrance.
As a Saints fan..I am not thrilled..but let’s hope that payton can get shockey motivated..
Yes, as long as Burress is healthy. Do you plan on going to training camp this summer? Gas should be down around 3.50 per gallon by the time I get there.
I live on the opposite side of the country longitudinally.
That, plus college = no.
