How Could Malaki Back Obama?
Vanity | 7/22/08

Posted on 07/22/2008 7:29:39 AM PDT by pabianice

Fellow Freepers, help me out here. How could Malaki pull the rug out from under McCain -- and the U.S. -- by echoing Obama's 16-Months-and-Out-Plan, allowing Iran to take-over Iraq in 2010? Does he really resent the U.S./Bush that much? Does he really want a democratic Iraq or does he want a continuation of tribes at one anothers' throats with him on top? Any anwers would be appreciated.

Could it be he was misquoted by the German paper that is in the tank for Obama, like he claims he was?

Maliki doesn't back Obama.

The media is just twisting and distorting again.

There are several threads about it from a couple of days ago.

He hasn’t backed Obama? He and his government have long expressed interest in conditions reaching the point where US troops could leave their country, and of course, the sooner the better.

That said, the Iraqis have also made it very clear that the largest variable in any sort of equations along the line of a withdrawal will be local security conditions and the capacity of the Iraqi military to function effectively in the absence of coalition forces.

So while the media will spin this as the PM agreeing with Obama, in fact his position has remained the same and is essentially the same as the Bush Administration’s: leave as soon as is feasible security and stability-wise; no sooner, no later.

HTH. :-)

He doesn't. Obama and his MSM backers want him to so much that they are willing to distort and twist what Maliki said so American voters will believe he backs Obama.

But what Maliki said is MUCH more in keeping and aligned with the Bush and McCain policies.

you are being spun by the MSM, the success of the surge has made it possible that the US troops could leave in as little as 16 months, as Malaki said when condistion on the ground warrant same as what Bush has said, Obama has said he would end the war immediately and even knowing what he knows now would not support the surge, the media is just taking the 16 months as if it is obamas plan...

It says in the NY Sun today that Maliki was advised by Ahmad Chalabi, who is in with the Iranians. The Iranians would like nothing better than for the US to leave, the sooner the better.

Perhaps Maliki knows something we don’t, and believes it’s a good plan?

You wouldn't know it by the way the Iraqi Army (and the coalition with Maliki's blessing) are kicking JAM's (Mookie Sadr's thugs) butts.

Maliki came out and said that Der Spiegel misquoted him and mistranslated him. The US has for the past 6 months already been working on agreements for troop withdrawals. This has nothing to do with Obama. The MSM is trying to attach the general withdrawal discussion between the US & Iraq to Obama.

Pure MSM manipulation.

These leaders...Karzai and Maliki are being polite.

He told Karzai a few days ago to get his butt out of a bunker.

He told Maliki...More troops?? Scr** you!!

Both Maliki and Karzai are much more diplomatic than Obama will ever be...

And remember, Iran is not a threat...Well, until that didn't go over very well...

Maliki is sending a signal to the White House. He is in the middle of a difficult negotiation with Bush on a long-term "Status of Forces" agreement that will determine how many of our troops will stay for how long on Iraqi soil.

This isn't like Japan or Korea. Islamic countries will be more cautious about 'selling out' to the USA. But Iraq still needs us and will need our umbrella to provide strategic security for a long, long time. I think Maliki is just playing poker with Bush here and also playing to the people in the region that he hopes America will go quietly when Iraq is ready.

Obama is being used, and doesn't even know it. What's sad is that he does not understand or even care about the strategic importance of a long-term presence in Iraq to stabilize the entire region.

The problem wth most Democratic candidates for the White House is that they want to be Governor of the US.

I think that Maliki is ungrateful. We come in and save his country and he spits in President Bush’s face. I am tempted to say “pull all our troops out” and see how long Maliki says alive. Not long is my guess once the terrorists have their way.

Read some of the other comments on here and check out some of the links.

Maliki did not back Obama.

My own personal rule is not to believe anything the media says until I have thoroughly checked it out. Patricular when it comes to

Iraq
or
Obama.

Fine, we will leave Iraq. But be warned, next time we invade because of things getting out of hand, there will be no civilians to protect or avoid.

“How could Malaki pull the rug out from under McCain — and the U.S. — by echoing Obama’s 16-Months-and-Out-Plan,”

Whatever Malaki did or didn’t intend to say in his interview with Der Spiegel, the monument Muslim honor and pride is playing some part in this. Polls have shown since Baghdad fell that Iraqis were glad Saddam was gone, but wanted US troops to leave ASAP. There always seemed to be no thought given to what might happen if the US did leave.

I’m afraid Muslim honor might be overruling common sense and rational analysis in some of this desire for US forces to leave.

Maliki reiterated his support for a US 2010 withdrawal in his meeting with Obama yesterday. No one needs to rely on the Der Spiegel article. Maliki’s own words say that 16 months from now is about right. That was the revision, not specifically endorsing Obama’s plan and thus interfering in the US election, but agreeing in principle on the same time frame.

Obama’s plan originally was to order a troop withdrawal on inauguration day.

Think back a little while, and you’ll remember that the big debate among Dems was who could withdraw the fastest. Obama trumped them all, saying he would do it his first day in office.

Only after the surge tilted the balance and the war was won did he change his tune. Now he is in essential agreement with Bush. But it won’t be reported that way. Seriously, if you believe anything the press says, you are making a mistake. Everything they print has a “through-the-looking-glass” quality about it.

Maliki’s public position is that the US should leave as soon as it is practical to do so. Thats Bush’s position. And suddenly that is Obama’s position. The catch is in “practical”. Obama is scaring the heck out of the Iraqis, who believe he is going to leave them high and dry. Nothing he has said so far has convinced them otherwise.

I don’t think anyone know for sure, but here are some major points to consider
- Short of Malaki spitting in Obama’s face, the MSM with Obama will spin it positive for Obama
- It is possible he was misquoted, as was later revealed
- The politician Malaki could never publicly come out in favor of open-ended stay for US troops.
- Some comments about withdrawal are probably always necessary to appease others in his Gov’t.

Maybe Obama is letting himself be used, or maybe Maliki is letting himself be used by Obama.

According to Charles Krauthammer last night, Maliki overestimates the ability of his own troops to handle the situation, and prefers the idea of all US troops leaving to McCain's idea of a long-time peaceful military presence.

It's possible all US troops will be gone by 2010 or 2011, and there will be a rabidly anti-American government in Bagdad. Jimmy Carter gave us Khomeini in Iran and Mugabe in Zimbabwe. Obama may give us the Iraqi equivalent.
