My computer crashed, as happens, some of my old familiar software cant go on my new computer. I need photo editing software that puts captions under the photo. Seems simple but I've tried several with no luck. You guys always help so I appeal to your experience!! As always: "Fight the good fight" Don VB
Don:
I’d guess you bought a new computer that has Windows Vista and your old, legacy, software won’t install. Go to the Internet to the sites for the software you used; then see if they have more recent versions that are Vista compatible. That way you can continue on with software you’re used to.
Otherwise, there’s all kinds of software available that’ll do what you say you need. Check some of the free sites to see what graphics software they have that may solve your problem.
I use Corel Paint Shop Pro X, but it costs $. So I don’t have much input available for free stuff.
Do you have your ‘Buy an Apple’ reflective suit on? It is needed at times like this. Anyways I would do as besco suggests and see if the company that made your software has a build that will work on your new computers OS.
I think you can use the free program Picasa...just Google and you should find it
I used Photo Tags Express. It has a new version. I guess it may be similar, just improved. Thanks for your imput.
If you can’t find something free to do what you want try Adobo Photoshop Elements. Its a cut down version of photoshop but is a lot cheaper.
IRFanview Free, does captions. http://www.irfanview.net/
OK, here goes.
I bought an Apple II when they first came out, and then worked on Microsoft machines at my jobs. I ended up with a Microsoft operating system (windows 98) on my previous laptop. But I had problems with some of the software and wanted to be able to program things to my needs.
I investigated LINUX, which is an alternative operating system to Microsoft Windows and Apple OS, etc.
First, it is free. Second, it can be run parallel to either your Apple or Windows operating systems. Third, you will be overjoyed at the number of programs that are available (at no cost) that will help you in your specific area.
That said, there are some downsides, too, of course. You do have to learn more about your computer, but not to the extent of becoming a geek.
My suggestion is to download the Ubuntu distribution (which is free) and can be downloaded onto a CD. You can test drive the operating system from your disk drive and even install it without removing your other operating system. And you should review your particular software needs (usually just by searching for “ubuntu [insert software for your specialty]” in a search engine).
My computer is now more powerful as I can get it to do things (math, graphics, etc.) that would cost much more than $0.00 were I to rely solely on Microsoft or Apple software.
I enjoy my computer more now that it is a Ubuntu/Linux machine, but I do not “hate” either Apple or Microsoft, as seems often the case with users of one or the other of those systems.
Hey, try www.gimp.org its an imaging software tool that is free also check out www.actionbump.com/tools.php for links to other free tools.
Google up Faststone for a great viewer editing file.
Folks, this is majorly helpful. My thanks!!
Check out www.gimp.org. See if they have a version for Windows Vista.
bfl
I use Picasa also. works well and is easy to use.
ping for help!
I was also going to suggest Photoshop Elements. It’s around $80 at Costco (probably Sam’s, too) and Amazon.com.
I use Solaris X for x86 in my Dell Precision 490. Absolutely love it, and it too is free. It is also without the support issues that is a part of Ubuntu.
ImageJ is free from the National Institutes of Health (NIH)

Does everything you need...for free
Ah, just found out about a “Puppy Linux 4.0” distribution which can be loaded onto a flash drive. Came out a few months ago. A great way to run any machine anywhere. Claims 100MB usage but “robust” with all the usual necessities plus the capacity to add one’s own special needs. Another suggestion for both the original poster and the you, Ouderkirk, if you want to travel “light.”
Ubuntu has support issues? They have a forum dedicated to support that is active (though touchy-feely). Investing a little time there has answered all my questions and taught me something too. I will give Solaris X a run too. Thanks for that information.
It's free. It's got a lot of features but it's not as hard to figure out how to use as gimp is. It's got a nice interface too.
Microsoft Photo Story is also free and works with XP, but not sure about Vista. (check the Microsoft Downloads website)
I played with Puppy for a while on an old computer that was ready to be junked. I found it the easiest to use of the distros - it immediately found my wireless router and went to work. And since it was small, the old machine had no problems handling it (it couldn't deal with Ubuntu, for example). I'm a fan.
Well, if ALL you want to do is stick captions on your photos, you can try doing it online at http://mine.icanhascheezburger.com or http://diy.despair.com/motivator.php which result in the two most common types of captioned pictures on the internet.
If captions are all you need, MS Paint can add them (assuming you’re using a MS OS). Otherwise, as others have pointed out, the GIMP has a good reputation.
GO WITH GIMP! ITS HOT.
I go with what I'm familiar with. I've had Paint Shop Pro for years, and am now with the X version. For awhile my laptop was dual-boot; XP SP2 and Ubuntu 10. Gimp was provided with Ubuntu. I played around with it but found it hard to work in. Maybe it was just getting to know another application, but I always found myself going into XP when I wanted to work with graphics. Now I've done away with Ubuntu completely. That's another story...
I might download the Windows version of Gimp and try it, but I don't do that much with graphics so am not sure it would be time well spent.
Install VMWare or some other virtualization solution, and install XP or Win98 or whatever you used to have inside that. Then you can continue to use your present software.
What’s you old computer’s OS Don?
If the interesting is the text side of the thing [as far as captions and bubbles and arrows are concerned], then I'd be looking more at Adobe Illustrator than Adobe Photoshop.
;)
Folks’ thanks for your help. I’m old but my computer is new Im trying Picasa and GIMP. Don
You're right. i could have phrased that better. My apologies Don.
If the computer is new, you can try out the GIMP by getting one of the Linux CD/DVD live disks. This will not change the configuration of your system, or use your hard drive at all. You can still get a feel for both the GIMP and Linux that way.
Personally, i prefer KDE to Gnome (those are desktop environments, not applications), and have been running SuSE Linux for about four years now on this computer.
They finally broke me down. I bought an apple....
Oh...dang. Another one goes over to the Dark Side.
LOL.
Paint.net is a good free image editing program.
It is built on Microsoft’s .net framework, so you will need to install .net when you install paint.net.
