A judge in New Zealand made a young girl a ward of court so that she could change the name she hated - Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii.
Judge Rob Murfitt said that the name embarrassed the nine-year-old and could expose her to teasing.
He attacked a trend of giving children bizarre names, citing several examples.
Officials had blocked Sex Fruit, Keenan Got Lucy and Yeah Detroit, he said, but Number 16 Bus Shelter, Violence and Midnight Chardonnay had been allowed.
One mother wanted to name her child O.crnia using text language, but was later persuaded to use Oceania, he said.
'Social handicap'
The ruling, in the city of New Plymouth on the North Island, was handed down in February but only made public now. UNUSUAL NAMES Allowed: Violence; Number 16 Bus Shelter; Midnight Chardonnay; Benson and Hedges (twins) Blocked: Yeah Detroit; Stallion; Twisty Poi; Keenan Got Lucy; Sex Fruit; Fat Boy; Cinderella Beauty Blossom; Fish and Chips (twins)
The name issue emerged during a custody hearing for the young girl - who had refused to tell her friends her name and went simply by "K".
"The court is profoundly concerned about the very poor judgment which this child's parents have shown in choosing this name," Judge Murfitt wrote.
"It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap, unnecessarily."
Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii's name has now been changed and the custody case resolved, court officials said.

Ok, so basically this judge took ward over this girl so the State could change her name legally. The girl was involved in a custody fight. IMHO, the parents are very stupid, but does the State have the right to make her a ward like this? Weird story...
People are f-—ed up, man.
it was either where the kid was conceived or where they were born. what a signature that is going to look like!
Her parents are obviously retards, so I say yes she should be a ward if only long enough to change her name.
i thought names like “Apple” or “Lyla” were weird. this makes them look like Bob and Jane.
ha. it was either post this or do work. you know what i chose. it’s only thursday!
European and other countries have been adopting laws that require state approval for childrens names. I find that more offensive than giving a kid a stupid name.
in the US, states can refuse to give out vanity plates they deem offensive. kind of a parallel.
That is totally different. First off, license plates are the property of the state. They make the rules for what can and can not go on them.
Are you suggesting that people are the property of the state and thus the state can determine if your name is acceptable?
So do I. But some people want the government to do their thinking for them.
I don’t know. My inclination is to say “no”. However, stupid, selfish parents need to understand that it’s NOT THEIR NAME - it’s their child’s. I think that purposely subjecting a child to lifelong ridicule is abusive. If some moron wants to give something a stupid name, then they can get a dog or a cat. Or a boat.
Giving a kid a strange name is a clear and despicable form of child abuse.
what would the state do if i wanted to name my kid "D--k Head"?
someone would say no. let's face it, we drive on state/federal roads, we live on state/federal land, enjoy protection provided by the state/federal gov'ts, and we pay them taxes.
they would refuse to put offensive names on state issued birth certificates/ID's.
Apparently its some sort of common problem...these parents aren’t the only retards there.
Must be the sheep gasses...
NZ ping
Those names are crazy but this kiwi judge is opening up a real can of worms here. I don’t want the government to have this much power over parents.
but just like violent criminals give up their right to walk amongst law-abiding citizens, do these parents give up their right to parent?
the answer is no, but not by much, IMHO.
if you like such a weird name, change your own name. don't take it out on a kid who has to deal with other cruel kids.
Damn. And I used to think my name was bad.
In the United States? Obviously.
