The Senate has confirmed the nomination of former Fort Bragg officer Ann E. Dunwoody to be the U.S. militarys first woman four-star general.
The vote clears the way for Dunwoody, 55 and currently a lieutenant general, to be promoted and become commander of the U.S. Army Materiel Command at Fort Belvoir, Va. She has been deputy commanding general since June 17.
Dunwoody was on vacation Thursday and unavailable for comment, said Michelle McCaskill, an AMC spokeswoman. The date for her promotion is to be determined, she said.
In her new job, Dunwoody will be in charge of 55,000 people in 149 locations worldwide.
If a soldier shoots it, drives it, flies it, wears it, or eats it, AMC provides it, a statement from the command said. AMCs role also includes maintaining and distributing spare parts and developing sophisticated weapons systems.
The nomination was confirmed by unanimous consent, said Wes Climer, a spokesman for Sen. Elizabeth Dole, a North Carolina Republican. She is a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, which confirmed the nomination Tuesday and sent it to the full Senate on Wednesday.
I am pleased the Senate confirmed Lt. Gen. Dunwoodys historic nomination to be the first female four-star general in the U.S. military, Dole said in a statement released through her office. She is abundantly qualified to serve as commander of the United States Army Materiel Command, and I have great confidence in her ability to carry out the duties of that important post.
Dunwoody received bipartisan support for her confirmation. Sen. Hillary Clinton, a Democrat who represents Dunwoodys home state of New York, also expressed support. Clinton noted Dunwoodys New York ties as a graduate of State University of New York at Cortland and service as commander of the Division Support Command at the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, N.Y.
Today, another glass ceiling has been shattered in our nation with the nomination of a woman to the rank of general for the first time in the history of Americas armed forces, Clinton said in a statement on June 23, when Dunwoody was nominated. Lt. Gen. Ann Dunwoodys nomination not only reflects her own remarkable achievements as an officer, but also serves as a symbol of the tremendous strides by women who serve this country in uniform.
Dunwoody has been Army deputy chief of staff for logistics and commanded the U.S. Army Combined Arms Support Command at Fort Lee, Va., and the Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command, Scott Air Force Base, Ill.
In the 82nd, she commanded the 407th Supply and Transportation Battalion, which became the 782nd Main Support Battalion.

Congratulations to the newly minted full general. I wasn’t aware that there’d never been a female flag officer at that rank before. Glad the Army was able to be the first to do this.
Looks like a female Monty...
They put a woman in charge of shopping?!

Congrats, General Dunwoody.
Or a male Monty.
Notice the difference in the two senators’ quotes. Senator Dole talks about the general’s qualifications, while Senator Clinton gives the standard (as in unoriginal) “shattering the glass ceiling” rhetoric.
LOL. . . .(boy, are you gonna pay for that. . . )
USArmy: “If a soldier shoots it, drives it, flies it, wears it, communicates with it, or eats it — AMC provides it,”

Congrats!
LIEUTENANT GENERAL TERRY L. GABRESKI
Maybe we'll have two four-stars soon.
they sure never look like Laurie Dhue :(
My wife is an extremely tough contract negotiator and gets "full value" for every dollar spent, while us boys just want to take the toy and go out and play. Fun is for now. We can pay for it later.
“Dunwoody confirmed as first female 4-star general”
I thought that honor belonged to Wesley Clark.
Great point.
''I am very honored but also very humbled today with this announcement,'' Lt. Gen. Dunwoody said Monday. ''I grew up in a family that didn't know what glass ceilings were. This nomination only reaffirms what I have known to be true about the military throughout my career ... that the doors continue to open for men and women in uniform.''
wasn’t Grace Hopper of the Navy?
(it was either that or she was the oldest)
Yeah, but she was a two star.
I read that "What it does not say is that someone in her family has fought and served in every war since this country has been in existence. Her sister is a pilot her brother was a pilot and she has a relative in the service academy right now. So this is a long family history and should be respected by all. Good job general! Thank you for your service."
Good stock indeed!
I'm a contract administrator/negotiator for a defense company and it's my job to do pretty much the opposite - get as much money for our items & services as possible. And yes, there are plenty of very sharp and tough female contracting officers and negotiators out there - both in the commercial marketplace and government sector as well.
