WELLFORD — The theft of a black bear cub from Hollywild Animal Park has led to the jailing of a Blacksburg man.

"Newell", a 7-month-old black bear cub, enjoys a romp in leaves at Hollywild Animal Park in Inman, Tuesday afternoon. The bear was stolen from the park Saturday night and was reunited with its sibling "Nelson" and the zoo staff Monday. Both animals were rescue cubs and have been at the park since March. John Chadwick Montgomery, 31, of 294 Ed’s Road, Blacksburg, on Tuesday was booked at the Spartanburg County Detention Facility and charged with third-degree burglary and grand larceny. Montgomery and two other people — Anthony Derrick Elliott, 28, of 361 White Farm Road and Amy Brooke Mayberry, 20, of 420 Foster Lake Road — are accused of taking a 7-month-old cub from the park late Saturday night.
The incident report states Montgomery took the bear to Flying J Travel Plaza, 1011 N. Mountain St., Blacksburg, and offered people a chance to pet it for $1.
The cub, “Newell” was returned to the park Monday afternoon and was reunited with his brother “Nelson.” Newell was unharmed physically, but animal keepers said the bears were worried during their first separation.

In high school some friends and I were going to steal a bull and turn it loose on the football field.
That is, until we saw how godawful BIG the bull was.
HAHAHAHAHA only in South Carolina. He probably was already drunk or high and decided that stealing a bear was a MUCH better idea. Mabey he was looking for a better pick-up line because “Hey Baby! You wanna pet my Monkey?” sounded too weird.
