Playing Hurt (review of book on girls' sports injuries)

...

Sokolove cites studies showing that young women who play soccer, basketball and volleyball suffer tears to the anterior cruciate ligament (or A.C.L., a flexible, rectangular-shaped band of tissue that stabilizes the knee joint) up to eight times as often as men in the same “jumping and cutting” sports. And the injury parade doesn’t end with hobbled knees. Female athletes tend to get shin splints more often than their male counterparts; women who play on college soccer teams suffer the same rate of concussions as men on the football team do. Over all, female athletes may simply be more prone than male athletes to chronic ankle sprains and to overuse injuries — stress fractures, tendonitis, bursitis. Sokolove interviewed a sports doctor in Washington, D.C., who treats “young female athletes with a chain of injuries, from the feet up through the trunk.” “There’s a chain of events with boys too,” she said. “But I see it more with the girls.”

Sokolove focuses on knees, which he calls “the site of the most dire long-term consequences.” An athlete who ruptures the A.C.L., sometimes from the simple act of planting her foot on the turf, loses a season and may have to swear off her sport. The shredded A.C.L. is replaced in a complex surgery that requires fashioning a new one — ideally, from the nearby patellar tendon — and grafting it into place. The procedure leaves scar tissue and puts the athlete at risk for arthritis, even for knee replacement before menopause. And it’s costly: one expert puts the tab for the surgery and months of rehab at $17,000 to $25,000 per injury.

The book being reviewed is "Warrior Girls: Protecting Our Daughters Against the Injury Epidemic in Women’s Sports" by Michael Sokolove. An article by him on this topic is at http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/11/magazine/11Girls-t.html .

Feminists will sacrifice the welfare of individual women (and men, of course) if it interferes with their unisex vision. It should not be assumed that the same fraction of girls and boys will want to play team sports, or that the danger of injury is the same.

Torn ACL is no fun at all. I've got problems with both of my knees from high school and college sports, and I've had 3 arthroscopic surgeries and an arthrotomy on my left knee, and one arthroscopic surgery on my right. At 46, I'm hobbled with arthritis, and will probably need to have both of my knees replaced before I'm 50. At least I hope so.

BTW, it's no surprise that women play hurt in sports... I've long been aware that a woman's pain threshold is far greater than a mans, and I can prove it in 2 words.... "Bikini Wax." I have no doubt that a bikini wax would kill a man.

While I share the author’s concern about ACL injuries , I’m personally more concerned about boob damage.

Do you mean women and men are different?

How can this be?

Football is actually safer than some of the non-contact sports. In football you are expecting somebody to be trying to cripple you, in basketball you don't expect it because it is against the rules.

Boob damage? Hell, what about concussions from them?

Can we all say it? This is all because the feminazis have fed us the lie that the female body is equal or better in every way to the male body? Not when it comes to hard physical labor. The stats here seem to confirm it.

All it takes is to come down on someone’s foot and twist funny - happens all the time to both guys and gals.

Yes, but...

In my family, there are two boys and two girls. The boys and one of the girls played soccer, the second girl played volleyball. We all played basketball. Both of my sisters tore their ACLs playing basketball, whereas my brother and I never had anything more than an ankle sprain. Seems like our family would be proof of the research here.

On a side note, my older sister went on to play college ball, but quit after her sophomore year because she was really tired of the aggressive lesbianism on the team. She said it took the fun out of playing on a team.

Wow, the whole lesbian thing was really that bad? I mean, everyone kinda jokes about it stereotypically, but her experience was really that bad? That is seriously too bad. Maybe when she is out of college, she can find some co-ed or women’s teams that aren’t full of lesbian jocks looking for a hookup.

She must be a pretty girl. (You don’t have to answer as you’re her brother.) :)
