What exactly is "America's promise", according to Obama?
I kept waiting for him to define it and all I kept hearing was America's promise is what makes us Americans and it's why people want to come here, etc.
Then I thought, does he think America promises everyone a wonderful life and future? I mean, we offer opportunities for a wonderful future if you want to work hard, but we don't promise it.
What is it? Did I miss something?
It’s being a single mom. I guess being free of men.
the promise is a destruction of this nation that is why we are all unclear on what he is saying.
I was wondering the same thing, but I’m coming to realize that America promised all of its lowly citizens a good paying job, free health care, homeownership, free money to 3rd world countries, free education, cradle to the grave welfare, and I’m sure there’s more but I’m not fully enlightened yet to His holiness Barack Obama’s full plan.
Martin Luther King did not need rock stars and fireworks to leave his legacy. Obama is NO MLK. He is no more than a cinder in the ashy heap of history. Obum is an empty suit with the forked tongue of the devil himself, dare I say of a false profit. He is a Marxist, who went to a Marxist so called “Christian” church who damned America and who’s very mission, (so called, “black liberation theology” DENIES THE DIVINITY OF CHRIST. The event was so much bigger than the candidate that it will leave but a sooty residue in the minds of even the most devout Obamatrons. The bad news is that the republicans are so ineffectual and so afraid of not being polite that they are likely to sabotage the gift that the democrats have given them. A soulless, empty windbag, who loathes 50% of his genetic makeup. Some might argue his better half, at very least the half that didn’t run out on him. Gutter politics from the OLD party of lowest common denominators. God save America.

The little punk keeps referring to President Bush as "George Bush" over and over and over again. He did it again tonight in his stupid speech, and he has been doing it for months now.
I come from a home where that is considered disrespectful and flippant behavior, and it is anything BUT statesmanlike conduct.
I won't tolerate it, and I will fight Obama's disrespectful people all the way to November.

I think the Founding Fathers were thinking along the lines of a Marxist “Utopia” with a black “community organizer” as the president. I guess that is what he means by “promise.” I know he doesn’t mean being allowed to safely grow in the womb, escape the womb without being murdered and then being given the same rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution that are currently being given to Islamo terrorists and to babies born to illegal aliens.

You are right and I didn’t catch it. He says “George Bush” but “President Clinton.” And then he says that we all need to respect each other equally.

It really was. He went into something else and I thought, this is very disjointed, especially for a prepared speech.
Hillary used to talk about restoring the American dream and the promise of America also. It’s a meaningless phrase that anyone can interpret any way they want to. All of the liberals / radicals / Democrats agree that George W. Bush has extinguished the promise of America, and we’re coming out of eight years of darkness, yadda yadda, yadda, and only good Democrats can restore America to greatness.
I love how they talk in cliches and generalities.

Sounds to me like he is taking the “pursuit of” out of the Constitution so it just reads “Life, Liberty, and Happiness? He’ll work on getting that “life” part out later.

Exactly! I keep hearing about fulfilling America’s promise, but America’s promise was always about freedon and the Demaocratic Party since about 1970 has been about expanding government control. As a child I always thought that America’s promise was that if you kept your nose claen and worked hard you could build a decent life for you and your family. If the other guy did the same thing, we would all be able to get along nicely. It was never about what the government would do for you.
Same, exact promise as Chavez had for Venezuela. Baraq's campaign was identical to Hugo's. Since the poor outnumber the rich, tell the poor you'll pull those fat-cats down and give the layabouts what they so richly deserve. Absolutely identical campaigns. I've been watching closely.

Also, what am I missing? How can McCain vote with “Bush” 95% of the time? Does the President vote? I just don’t get it. My civics must be wrong. What are they referring to?

His assertion is bunk, but it is the typical class warfare bunk that comes from rich liberals who want to take money from one group of people and give to others who didn’t earn it in hopes they will become loyal Democratic voters.
This is not the philosophy that made America what it is. This is not a land of equal outcome, but of equal opportunity commensurate with one’s talents, interests and drive.

I am not robbed by people who have more money than me. I am robbed by a government that wants to penalize my industry and give increasing portions of what I earn to people who do not emulate my principles, morals and ethics.
What have we come to? We once taught our young people the virtues of hard work, saving, personal responsibility and accountability for one’s actions, chastity before and fidelity and commitment in marriage, honesty, integrity and virtue — not to mention the Ten Commandments (especially the one about not coveting that which belongs to your neighbor). We now teach them entitlement, victimhood, class envy and rights to other people’s money. When one robs a bank, it’s a crime. When government takes our money, it’s called a tax. Same result.
