Global warming forces Dutch to strengthen dykes
ABC News (au) ^ | September 3, 2008 | Emma Alberici

The Netherlands will be forced to spend about $170 billion to extend and strengthen its dykes to protect the country from rising sea levels.

A committee charged with investigating the future effects of global warming on the Netherlands delivered its findings overnight.

It found that the country, nearly two-thirds of which lies below sea level, must spend up to $2 billion per year over the next century on additional safety measures if it is to survive the ravages of rising sea levels.

Large-scale work will be needed to extend and strengthen dykes.

The report was written by the Delta commission which was established after the disastrous floods of 1953 that claimed the lives of around 2,000 people

Is it rising sea levels or sinking land.

I remember back in junior high school learning that the Netherlands built their dikes because the land was sinking.

“The Mississippi River broke through a protective dike today...What is a protective dike? Is it a large woman that says ‘Don’t go near there!’ ‘But Betty—’ ‘Don’t go near there! Don’t go down by the river!’... No, we can’t say ‘dyke’ on the air, we can’t even say ‘lesbian’ anymore, it’s ‘women in comfortable shoes’...thank you!”

After the dykes have been strengthened, maybe they should then turn their attention to the dikes.
