Im looking to buy something for home defense. I dont need all the bells and whistles and Id like to keep it under $250.00 Anyone have any ideas on a solid shotgun that fits my needs?
Here you go. Search
Davidson's Gallery of Guns. Use the 'Gun Genie' on the right.
- Select Shotgun under 'Gun Type'
- Leave the rest set to 'all'
- Type your Zip Code
- Then click Search
- NOTE: In my zip code, I first clicked Charles Daly brand in the above steps and found a 12Ga pump with a MSRP of $269.00.
- I then clicked 'Get A Quote' and 3 Local Dealers showed. Cheapest sale price $246.99, highest $255.88
But natch, then there's local sales tax and background check fees, but you get an out the door price.. You can then click Accept Offer and set up the sale - all on-line. And if you purchase through Davidson's you get a Lifetime Guarantee on top of the Mfg's guarantee.
Try it, it should help you. Plus it's fun.

“You probably won’t find a decent semi-auto for under $250.00 I just picked up a Remington 1100 on gunbroker.com for $325.00 added a 2 shot magazine extension for $40.00 and refinished it for $10.00. I cut the 28” barrel down to a LEGAL 18.5” Nice compact home/truck self defense weapon! If you need to keep it under $250.00 a Mossberg 500 pump would be a great choice”
Just make sure after cutting the barrel back, that you test test test the gun to make sure it functions properly. Gas-operated shotguns can have their function altered by shortening the barrel.
That said, I have an 1100 very similar, though mine is longer with a longer mag extension. If you pick up a used 1100, be sure it’s the 2 3/4” length chamber, as it is easier to find good defensive ammo in that length.

Here's another one from Davidson's. It is a little over your budget.
- Mossberg 500, "3 in 1", 'Home Def. Hunting, Cruiser'
12 ga Pump, 5+1 w/ 2 3/4" shells. MSRP $362.92 - 'My' cheapest instant quote sale price: $298.95
- Out the door total $341.92 w/ Taxes and Fees. $90.73 online down payment req'd,
- $251.09 balance due at the store
Since you're from VA your price will vary from mine here in IL

Yeah, let's clarify that:
He's looking for a SEMI-AUTO, not a pump.
The 500 and 870 are pumps, guys. Read the title first.

*** Thanks!***
Hey, your welcome.
I can and do spend hours at Davidson's Gallery of Guns just 'window shopping'.
Their old Gun Search had a feature I wish this new 'Genie' did. You could enter a price range so you didn't spend time looking at something costing $1,500.00 when your budget was $300.00 - $400.00 --- but its still a great website to shop for new guns.

Spend a few bucks more and get a Benelli - you’ll thank yourself later.

Remington 11-87, preferably the
LE version (it's a marketing gimmick, it's available to the general public).

Incorrect. From the law, itself, here are the banned shotgun features:
(6) A semiautomatic shotgun that has both of the following:
(A) A folding or telescoping stock.
(B) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon, thumbhole stock, or vertical handgrip.
(7) A semiautomatic shotgun that has the ability to accept a detachable magazine.
(8) Any shotgun with a revolving cylinder.
