Enjoying a leisurely wade in the waters of the Dutch undergrowth this grey heron decided to go in search of lunch when he came across this unsuspecting black rabbit.
Undeterred by its size, the grey heron, the largest bird of its kind in Europe, swooped down and gobbled the rabbit up in one mouthful, as these pictures show.

i saw a 4’ rattler eat a dove once,
does that count?
Our Weims will occasionally catch a rabbit and the poor rabbit makes the most horrendous noise. We try to rescue the rabbit before they kill it. They also stalk squirrels, and their latest fad is bringing us turtles each time they venture into the woods. Why they’re all of a sudden obsessed with turtles, we don’t know...but they come back with them almost everytime, and at least the turtles aren’t harmed.
Wow
Only applies to ptarmigans and their relatives. Ptarmigans have been unfairly persecuted by bunnies and their cohorts, like seagulls, gyrfalcons, foxes, and squirrels.
poor little bunny..looked like a baby bunny. Hope that big ol bird had heart burn.
ok.
also, i was so enthralled that i forgot to take my camera out of my back pocket!
Hey Swampsniper, I bet you would enjoy these.

Saw where a 40 Yellow Catfish regurgitated in a holding tank 3 puldues (Coots-that is a diving bird) I guess when the dive to get food, they become food for the catfish.
Bunnies got himself a one-way ticket to Hell.
Poor bunny. Nothing screams like a rabbit, except possibly a horse.
..or Hillary when Obama wins the nomination over her.
That heron was tougher than Jimmy Carter.
Looking at it again, I'd say ridiculously photoshopped.
There is a national wildlife preserve near where we live. One can see quite a few blue herons there. Just in a couple of visits I saw blue herons catching a snake and a rat.
The big herons and egrets are tough customers, I’ve seen them grab small gators and big snakes.
I’d have killed that f#cking bird before it ate the rabbit. I know it’s nature but I like rabbits more than herons.
What if it was a rabbit trying to kill the ptarmigan? Ptarmigan is a type of bird that lives in the Arctic and is related to pheasants.
Bow down to Arwen, Princess of bunnies.
She’s adorable. I know a couple princesses myself.
Unusual ping.
She’s just a lovable little fuzz ball, that’s for sure. : )
Our last rabbit was with us for 11 years. Arwen is still less than a year old, but has taken over the house and our hearts already.

...or maybe it's just an outpatient tonsillectomy.
Our area is infested by rabbits.
And I do mean infested - they are everywhere.
The fox population can’t even keep up with them, and the
fox are very, very successfull at catching the rabbits.
There are just so many of them.
Maybe we need heron (a couple dozen of them anyway).
I have a grey heron living near-by. Visit the brook in my front yard almost everyday.
Mostly he just stands there, but when he decides to take off, what a show!
I’ve seen a Tri-colored Heron in Texas stalk, catch, and eat a rattlesnake.
Oh! Poor little bunny!
I can’t believe the disgusting display of bambiism on this thread.
Herons are predators. (So are humans.)
Rabbits are prey.
Deal with it.
Southern MO has a bluish-gray heron, very large. I’ve seen them on canoe floats on the Current River, and one landed in my 1/2 acre pond out back. Very beautiful.
Well, you know with the gal bunnies, it’s all about land. And if she’s a princess, the whole house is hers.
Baby. Rabbit screams sound like babies crying/screaming.
Rabbits are also domestic pets.
List out your pets, and we’ll discuss how to fry them up, tear them apart, whatever.
You probably don’t have pets that fall into more than one category like rabbits do.
So just STFU. You’d be feeling compassion for it if it was one of your pets. And if you knew anything about rabbits, that one (black) came from domestic stock, not wild stock. Any other coloring than the typical cottontail markings are domestic (pet) animals.
Interestingly, male rabbits looking for mates also sound like a woman screaming. And when sitting very still in the woods,I have had does walk up rather close behind me and scream piercingly, obviously in hopes of making me jump so that they could figure out what sort of creature I was (they tend not to recognize humans who are not standing up and whom they can’t smell). The scream of a deer is more piercing than a human can generate but there are similarities, and at a distance it could easily be mistaken for a woman in great distress.
Neat info. Thanks for sharing it.
You don't know the first thing about me.
So just STFU.
Whassamatta? Can't handle the truth?
that one (black) came from domestic stock
BFD. If it was feral, it's prey. Deal with it. If it was a pet, its owner is an irresponsible jerk, who shouldn't be allowed own pets.
Thank you for demonstrating, yet again, that bambiism is a mental illness.
Thak YOU for demostrating your tagline is under-stated.
You’re a class-1 putz. I know that much about you. Feel free to stay the hell away from me on the board from now on.
Quick, somebody alert PETA!!

Hasenpfeffer. MMMmm Mmmm Good.
Feel free to stay the hell away from me
ROFL!!! The hypocrisy of you ludicrous demand is astonishing.
Me too...and I heard bunnies being nabbed by coyotes one time and rabbits howl is something you never forget. It is terrible.
I am taking this rabbit falling prey with joy and glee. Every bunny that dies is God’s punishment for waging war against ptarmigans in the Great Ptarmigan/Rabbit War. Every rabbit that dies, God is laughing and mocking them.
Watership Down should be banned, like books and films that have bunnies. Watership Down is the land of the Sodomite and Damned because bunnies are God’s enemies. God hates bunnies and their allies.
Some wild rabbits can have black fur like a domestic rabbit. Anyways, good riddance to filth.
