FR Gun Club - Hunting and stuff

Posted on 10/01/2008 3:44:57 AM PDT by sig226

I picked this up last month and added the Lyman sight. It's a post '64 .30 - 30, but old enough that it was drilled for the sight. I'm going to sight it in today, although I still have to tap out the buckhorn and get a wedge to fill the dovetail. I was supposed to go bowhunting for hogs this fall, but job related stuff put the kibosh on that. It looks like I'll have to wait until this spring for my bacon fix.

Who's going hunting? Whatcha gonna git?

I think Hiredhand is smitten with this method......;o)

http://www.buckstix.com/howitzer.htm

Funny stuff !

Using a stainless Ruger No 1 in 45-70 with a satin grey 1.5-6X VX 7 Leupold on warne QD lever mounts. Replaced the grip cap with a NECG version that has a compartment that I modified to hold a back up No 100 NECG peep site that I modified with a merit adjustable aperture. A neoprene sling and a stock sock w/ 9 rounds of factory ammo or Garrett hammerheads round out my favorite rifle for Mulies, Whitetail and Elk.

Good hunting all , enjoy a great harvest !

Stay safe !

Regrettably I live in NJ. Our "firearm" season is usually only 5 days long, doesn't typically include a weekend, and will not allow anyhting except a shotgun.

These days my implement for Deer Hunting is a bow.

In NJ, the "Hunting Rifle" has been a thing of the past for many years now.

Just came back from elk hunting in Colorado with a muzzle loader. My son got a nice fat cow. Getting ready for North Dakota pheasant hunting in a couple weeks followed by deer season in November.

Here in CA, we can hunt pigs year-round. You have to buy tags and there is enough BLM land you can usually luck out. My biggest hunting gripe is the areas I hunt in are all covered by the lead ammo ban to save the condors.

Keep wanting to go and keep not making it.

Anyone in NE GA (’round the 400 corridor) want to take a newbie out for deer this fall? I need to learn the protocol here.

Ruger Bisley .45 Colt, PMC 300gr JSP @1250 fps. The challenge now is to get as close as possible. May there be venison, wild pork, wild turkey, and wild turkey in a glass on your dining table during the fall and winter.

I am currently couch-bound, so I have only hunted for the remote and my pain meds this season. Doctor might let me walk in about a month ( ACL / Medial Meniscus Reconstruction ). Bag one for me....

I don’t need a license, I can bag any deer coming across my 2 acres and claim they were after my garden! Got an antique 1895 Chilean Mauser in 7x57mm that has a virgin barrel and I think will be a great deer rifle.

Opening day shotgun on Hamburg Mountain, say at the end of Silver Lake Road, is about as close as I’d like to get to actual firearm combat. A couple of friends bowhunt there and say there are some beautiful deer in the area, as long as you stay away from the war zone.

So this is what I'm up to...

You should try being in Assunpink WMA the day after they release pheasants. I’d recommend type 2 Kevlar and some pepper spray for the dogs.

Honestly my favorite rig........:o)

Careful hand-loading and commercials loads make it a all round rifle for everything I hunt. Very rugged with the OEM laminated stock and a aftermarket pachmayr decelerator recoil pad that has the toe cut and reduced in length to allow use with cold weather clothing etc .

A keeper.....!!

Well, I'm off to the Gun Shop.

I got my SS check so I'm off to buy a Mossberg 500 or 590. That will complete my FR Gun Club Trinity.

Handgun / Long gun / Shotgun

I was worried about the effect of recoil on my ribs/sturnum, but the Dr. that did my quad bypass operation checked my over last week and gave his official Okey-Dokey. Also, I have a Compstock on order that will help with felt recoil.

A guy I used to hunt with liked to hunt rabbits with cast bullets from his .45-70. That’s versatile.
