The ancient game of "Go" is well known as easy to learn and difficult to master. Louis Abronson of Los Gatos is one of 22 players traveling to Beijing, China to represent the American Go Association in the first World Mind Sports Games, October 3rd through 18th.

Go is one of several Mind Sports, which include chess, bridge, checkers, and xiangqi (Chinese chess). Abronson, like the other players, earned the right to compete in Beijing by winning a series of qualifying tournaments.

"International Go is dominated by the Asian giants--China, Japan and Korea--and they will each be sending their best," said Joanne Phipps, "but the US teams are competitive and they are expected to do well against the rest of the world."

Two of the players are only 11 years old. Seven of the 22 Go players required parental permission to attend.

"This is a sign that we are developing young talent," said team coach Feng Yun. Feng is one of only two women who have achieved 9 Dan, the highest rank in Professional Go. She teaches in New Jersey, and her school turns out a large number of highly skilled youth. Not yet an American citizen, she was not able to compete directly, but in the Olympic spirit graciously accepted the coaching position without pay.

The official theme of the World Mind Sports Games is: “Civilization has different origins. Wisdom has no boundary.”

LG might not produce world class mixed martial arts cage fighters but we’re heck with “Go”.

Who knew. Maybe we should try to start a trend of people sitting in Oak Meadow on Saturday, playing Go.
