CAMP FALLUJAH, Iraq – Lance Cpl. Brenda R. Trosset wanted more than to just say she went to Iraq. She wanted to get outside the comforts of base and have experiences that would enrich her life and career.

Trosset’s is a legal clerk with the Staff Judge Advocate’s office. The Iraqi Women’s Engagement program gives her the opportunity to step outside the office for a day, put on her body armor and rifle and be a part of the rebuilding of Iraq.

“The IWE is an amazing experience,” said Trosset, 20, of Mill Creek, Wash. “To really see what we’re here for, and to have the opportunity to meet Iraqis and talk to them.”

The IWE’s mission is to fill the void between coalition forces and Iraqi women and to bring Iraqi women into the process of rebuilding Iraq.

“The IWE is meant to raise awareness, and get women in the community involved in their civil government,” said 2ndLt. Lindsey D. Jorgensen, 25, of Denver, Colo. “And it gets them in contact with the non-governmental organizations and civil service organizations in their community.” Jorgensen is the assistant executive officer for civil affairs detachment 3, 2nd battalion 11th Marines, regimental combat team 1.
