Jeder war ein grosser Krieger (each was a great fighter)
Hielten sich fuer Captain Kirk (Thought of themselves as CAPT Kirk)
Das gab ein grosses Feuerwerk (it caused great fireworks)
Die Nachbarn haben nichts gerafft (the neighbors had nothing to loose)
Und fuehlten sich gleich angemacht (and were just as excited)
Dabei schoss man am Horizont (so someone shot at the horizon)
Auf 99 Luftballons (over 99 Luftballons)
99 Kriegsminister (99 ministers of war)
Streichholz und Benzinkanister (like matches and gasoline)
Hielten sich fuer schlaue Leute (though of themselves as clever)
Witterten schon fette Beute (launch already fat plunder)
Riefen: Krieg und wollten Macht (cried: War and power)
Mann, wer haette das gedacht (Man, who woulda’ thunk it)
Dass es einmal soweit kommt (that it would go this far)
Wegen 99 Luftballons (due to 99 Luftballons)
99 Jahre Krieg (99 years of war)
Liessen keinen Platz fuer Sieger (left no room for a winner)
Kriegsminister gibt es nicht mehr (there are no more ministers of war)
Und auch keine Duesenflieger (and no more fighter pilots)
Heute zieh ich meine Runden (today I turn around)
Seh die Welt in Truemmern liegen (see the world laying in ruins)
Hab’ nen Luftballon gefunden (I found a Luftballon)
Denk’ an Dich und lass’ ihn fliegen (I thought of you and let it fly)
