The Indian Navy can now go after Somali pirates without hindrance. It has been authorised for hot pursuit of pirates into Somalian waters. A countrys territorial waters extend to 12 nautical miles from its shore.
Till now, the navy did not have the mandate to chase pirates into Somalian waters.
A senior official said the navy had been given the permission to chase Somali pirates across the countrys maritime boundary under certain circumstances. Different laws apply when it comes to chasing pirates in territorial waters of another country. In the case of Somalia, we now have this permission. It will go a long way in checking piracy, he said.
The navy is also planning to strengthen its presence in the Gulf of Aden. INS Tabar, a stealth frigate with marine commandos aboard, has been patrolling the waters off the Gulf of Aden since October 23. Two days after it sank a pirate vessel, the navy said it could deploy more warships to secure maritime trade and protect Indian assets. A Delhi-class destroyer will soon be deployed there.
The Ministry of Shipping had suggested that four warships be deployed.
Another senior official said the navy was exploring the possibility of deploying more warships in the Gulf of Aden. The officer, however, said it was impossible for any nation to single-handedly combat piracy. We are looking at positioning more warships to make patrols more effective. But the real solution lies in better coordination between international navies.
India on Thursday asked the UN to form a peacekeeping force to combat piracy.
The Defence Ministry had earlier said Indian warships could not intervene in Somalian waters because of UN Security Council Resolution 1816, which authorises only states cooperating with Somalias transitional government to enter its waters.
I really hope we don’t get into Somalia again. We don’t need another black hawk down incident.
The US Navy is now a paper tiger thanks to political correctness. Ditto the British navy. The Indians know how to deal with Islam and their darker complexion means they can shoot back. Under political correctness - white people are racists if they defend themselves.
See Black Hawk Down. The Army begged and pleaded for tanks in Somalia. Congressional Black Causcus, which protected Fannie & Freddie, blocked the tank request because tanks could not be used against Africans (true). If we had one or twoo tanks, our guys would have had very few casualties.
Thank goodness for the Indian Navy.
INS Tabar (F44) (translated as battle axe) is the third of the Talwar-class frigates of the Indian Navy. INS Tabar is the first vessel in the Talwar class to be armed with supersonic BrahMos (PJ-10) anti-ship cruise missiles. She is also equipped with Barak missiles.
I really don’t think a carrier is right for pirate hunting. And besides, they have far more important things to do; larger targets to keep an eye on.
We don't have to go inside Somalia now but we can probably disrupt sea piracy in the region preemptively like Indians doing now.
sounds like a plan.
If you think the US Navy was not a part of these transactions you are very naive.
India is the world designated pirate killer
No, but I think India wants to be known as the best pirate killers in all of the Indian Ocean... though.
This really annoys the crap out of me! I am VERY happy about what the Indians have done and I congratulate them for being warriors on the right side in the War on Terror. They are brave sailors!
However, there is just NO excuse for Western Navies (including the worlds FINEST Navy, ours!) to not be actively pursuing these Islamic pirates.
To give an excuse that “US Interests are not threatened” is ridiculous as these Islamic pirates are using much of the ransom for funding terrorism.
Bert - Do not think I do not appreciate the USN. They are the elite fighting force in the world (as are our other branches). The US Navy can do almost anything. It is the BS politics that hamstrings them. I just wish our swabbies were not handcuffed by the vermin in Washington which will be even worse soon. This piracy nonsense would be handled in a day if the USN were allowed to do their job.
“The US Navy is now a paper tiger thanks to political correctness. Ditto the British navy. The Indians know how to deal with Islam and their darker complexion means they can shoot back. Under political correctness - white people are racists if they defend themselves.”
Interesting that you bring this up.
I did, too - here:
Hah, yeah some deal here with the US giving something to India. But I bet the negotiated closing date was before the O inauguration.
......This piracy nonsense would be handled in a day if the USN were allowed to do their job......
I understand your point.
My thought is that is not necessary for the USN to handle the problem. We have allies, one of which is India. It appears that in large measure the Indian Navy has been designated as the pirate killer by international consensus and has happily accepted the opportunity.
Bert - I get it. A smart strategy too. My guess is USN and NATO ships can radio the Indians to take over.
The shipping companies could probably pay for part of India’s fuel bills. I think the key is to blast and sink the pirate boats or ships. This is the best way to stop it.
Not to forget that the oil on these tankers is headed to many different countries, including the US. That's a direct US interest.
Somali Pirates have Lavish Life Style or Rot in Jail
