Wisconsin city's horse-manure rule gets dumped

LOYAL, WIS. (AP) - Let the horse apples fall where they may - as long as they're on the right path.

The Loyal City Council has relented and repealed an ordinance that would require horses within city limits to have manure-catching devices.

But that 7-1 vote this week was followed by a 5-3 vote approving a new ordinance requiring that horse-drawn vehicles follow certain routes through town.

Mayor Carol Lampsa said merchants raised concerns that the area's Amish residents who use horse-drawn vehicles would avoid the city because of the manure-catching ordinance passed Oct. 21.

Also, area Amish residents said they were concerned the bags for catching manure would make horses skittish.

The mayor said the designated route will be published in the local Tribune-Record-Gleaner newspaper for two weeks before enforcement of the new ordinance starts.

If you'd like to be on or off this Upper Midwest/outdoors/rural list please FR mail me. And ping me is you see articles of interest.

I can't imagine this was really an issue.

That aside, I saw two Amish carriages leaving the deer registration yesterday, deer on the rear. Wish I'd had a camera.

With America getting off oil and gasoline within the next 10 years, horses are a proven technology for getting around that perhaps more of us will be using, not just the Amish.

Using manure-catching devices will eliminate thousands of green-collar jobs for those interested in earning a living sweeping it up.

Loyal, WI is a CITY? Who knew? 1,225 is the population.

Heck! I live in a Cow Town of 6,000, known as a “Village.”

Guess I’d better start puttin’ on ‘City Airs’ and look down my nose at others, LOL!

ROFLMSS!!!!!!!!

Everyone around here thinks I have "City Airs" just because I moved here from a town that had a larger population than this entire county,

I won't bother telling you the reactions I get about having grown up in NYC before moving to that big town.

You could never tell. You’re one of the most down-to-Earth people I’ve ever met.

I grew up on pavement, too. It has it’s perks, but man, I’d rather live in the wide-open and only see people on the horizon when I absolutely have to. :)

(The site has been down all day for maintenance. But don’t forget to stop in and say HI! ‘The Girls ‘miss you!)

“down-to-earth” sometimes has to be learned —I guess I did something right in my education :)

Thanks for clueing me in — I thought I was persona non grata.

I have moved from one expanding area of California after another, all my life, trying to keep ahead of the masses, traffic and otherwise. (I remember L.A. County before the freeways!)

The biggest problem with those that follow is that they bring their “Big City” attitudes with ‘em.

I hope this change in the economy will help change attitudes
toward life. We do need to slow down and enjoy everyday life more.
