I think that to make a good vampire movie, you have to stay true to the legend of the vampire. They are Undead, creatures bereft of a soul. So while they can move about and act like humans, they lack the one ingredient that makes humans something other than beasts: a touch of the Divine.

Lacking that, they cannot tolerate anything that is good and holy. They cannot even sustain themselves without feeding on the essence of others.

There is nothing sympathetic about them, and I don't ever want to see another movie from the vampire's point of view. They are purely evil. Anne Rice's whiny Lestat forsakes the essence of vampirism. No true Undead would ever bemoan the loneliness of his existence or feel betrayed by his would-be victims. Regret and sadness are for beings with feelings, and feelings arise from the soul. Vampires have none.

I take it from your comment then that the latest Vampire hit movie -- TWILIGHT is one WHINY movie. Imagine a teenage Vampire as your neighbor who does NOT want to feed on human blood ( the equivalent of vegetarians ). Imagine a teen vampire whose main interest is seducing other teen age humans.

As for that HBO series TRUE BLOOD. They have essentially made Vampires an American minority like gays who demand civil rights like the rest of Americans. You even have politicians in that series FIGHTING for Vampire rights. Heck we even have organizations like the FELLOWSHIP OF THE SUN who are like modern day KKK's fighting against Vampire rights ( with signs in front of churches that say -- GOD HATES FANGS ).

That's essentially what this genre has morphed to in 2008.
